Night-night from beautiful, sweet Syrian hamster girl Eclair with her big, soulful eyes and the gentle disposition. Eclair's lovely color and markings are called "Golden", the traditional common name for Syrian hamsters, and the coloring before they were bred to have a variety of colors and fur lengths. Her color and beautiful markings, including what are called "cheek flashes", is the native/"wild" coloring of Syrian hamsters

Eclair came to the hamster haven August 2023 along with another female Syrian (Strudel who since found a wonderful adoptive home thanks to Sarah and Abby of Protectors of Paws & Claws) as I posted about at https://tinyurl.com/rcjf24ub. As I explained there, sadly, these two hamsters were purchased together at the recommendation of a pet store that also sold the owner a terrible, *tiny* cage with a much-too-small wire wheel (and wire wheels are dangerous for hamsters) -- it's awful that people are taking the advice of pet store personnel on how to properly care for their pet and, in my opinion, even worse that the pet stores are so often giving such horrible misinformation, often causing such misery and even sometimes death. (As I wish everyone knew, Syrian hamsters are solitary animals and must live alone once they reach approximately 6 weeks of age at which time they will start fighting; no matter how sweet and sociable Syrian hamsters may become with their humans, even in the wild they come together only to mate and for the few weeks the mom will care for the pups after which they eventually all go their own way to establish their own territories.)

Anyway, sadly, sure enough, these two girls soon started fighting; fortunately, the owner separated them into different (though still inadequate) cages. But because they didn't have the space for two hamsters plus because they have a very prey-driven puppy without a separate safe room in which they could house a hamster, anyway, they brought both of them to me. You can see when lucky Strudel was adopted last October at https://tinyurl.com/4jprj235.

Eclair was initially a very frightened, shy girl but has become so trusting and friendly now, she walks right into my hands, eager to come out for out-of-cage playtime and a treat, and letting me cuddle her on my lap. Needless to say, I love her very much!

The other beautiful Syrian hamster girl it is my pleasure to be hammie-sitting is Peach as I posted about at https://tinyurl.com/zcz9uuzc. Like all the other Syrian hammies, Miss Peach gets nightly playground time (everybody takes turns, of course!). Here are some photos of lovely Peach in the playgrounds (there are two Syrian hamster playgrounds and one for the dwarfs.)

The hardest part about hammie-sitting is giving the hamsters back to their loving HAMilies, no matter how wonderful I know they are! :-)

As I wrote a few days ago, one of the hamsters it is my pleasure to be hammie-sitting at the moment is the beautiful Neeia for her adoptive ham-mom Hitomi and HAMily while they're away. Sweet Neeia has been enjoying some playground time every night, of course getting her own little vacation while she's here!

Hammie Saturday night from sweet, adorable MeepMeep, a Chinese hamster girl who arrived at the hamster haven in December 2023 as you can read all about at http://tinyurl.com/3uxd2wm2. As I wrote there, she originally had been named Roadrunner but then her former owner started calling her MeepMeep (the sound that the Roadrunner in the old cartoon makes) so MeepMeep she is!

Her kind and loving owner had to give her up with reluctance and tears but MeepMeep's favorite nightly "hobby" is to run with a bunch of food in her wheel making loud, clattering sounds throughout the night, preventing her owner from sleeping, and she lives in a studio apartment so doesn't have another room into which MeepMeep could have been moved. She clearly loves MeepMeep and I know this decision was difficult for her. But I hope she is reassured that MeepMeep is getting lots of love and a happy life here, I just adore her!

MeepMeep had been purchased from a pet store (the owner was unaware until she found me that there are hamsters looking for homes in rescues and shelters) last November so she is likely about 11 months old now. She is very cute, as you can see, and very sweet, too!

It's my pleasure to be hammie-sitting a lovely banded sable Syrian hamster girl named Neea who wishes everybody goodnight. Our dear friends and former adopters Hitomi and HAMily adopted Neea from rescue-friend Sheena of Hamsters Home Rescue in April -- we fellow rescuers are happy to try to help each other out, especially when it affects the wellbeing of a hamster in need so I was so glad to put Hitomi and Sheena in touch then. And I'm so happy to get to meet beautiful Neea and give her a little vacation of her own while Hitomi,Tetsushi, Kanato, and Ibuki are away for a week.

Sleep tight from darling "new kid" Cricket who, as I posted about at https://tinyurl.com/53j6dudu, came to the hamster haven to live just over a couple of weeks ago. Like many if not most Chinese hamsters, Cricket appears pretty self-sufficient and doesn't seem to crave interaction but he doesn't appear to be frightened once I pick him up.

Cricket is very sweet but, like most Chinese hamsters in my experience, not super-interactive in that he doesn't solicit attention. But once he's picked up, he sits pretty still in my hands, a common Chinese hamster trait. But please note that this does not necessarily signify that the hamster is feeling calm and tame -- even very terrified Chinese hamsters will often kind of freeze in your hands when picked up, sadly leading some people to think that the hamster is tame and happy to be held when actually they are just frozen in fear which you can detect by feeling if they are trembling in your hands :-( . Fortunately, Cricket does not seem to be terrified, no trembling, just a bit shy and reclusive.

Of course, I am happy to respect and love Cricket on his own terms.

Sweet dreams from sweet, darling Dudley, a very floofy (beyond merely fluffy) Syrian hamster boy who came to the hamster haven last October as you can read about at https://tinyurl.com/bdh4ax9v. He was originally so very terrified of people, it was so sad to see him so scared, but he's become a wonderfully friendly boy who walks right into my hands, and now he likes to snuggle, what a love!

So of course now I call him Cuddly Dudley! 🙂

Dudley was surrendered to rescue-friend Sheena in NJ by a family who did not realize he was going to be primarily a nocturnal pet and so they decided they no longer wanted him. I'm happy to have him here, I just love him so much!

Welcome to sweet Peach whom it's my pleasure to be hammie-sitting for her HAMily Liz, who rescued her in the Spring, and Liz's lovely daughters Kaitlyn and Ella who all dropped Peach off with me this evening. Wonderful Liz is a veterinarian, by the way --how lucky could Peach get?! :-) I'm so happy to be giving pretty Peach a little vacation of her own while her loving HAMily is away.

And, beautiful Miss Peach wishes everybody pleasant slumbers!

Sleep well from adorable little Chucky, a Roborovski dwarf boy who came to the hamster haven in December as I posted about at http://tinyurl.com/54xfcryz. Chucky came from a very nice teenage girl whose family was moving out-of-state to a place that won't allow him there, sadly. I was very glad that she reached out to me, making sure that he went someplace hamster-knowledgeable, and especially "Robo"-experienced since, like most Robos, Chucky is extremely fast and extremely cute -- he *was* extremely shy for quite a while but I'm so happy to report that Chucky and I have been making great strides and he is getting more tame and comfortable being handled all the time (though certainly still skittish), even taking pumpkin seeds from my fingers while I'm holding him.

The tears in his right ear probably originate from when he was kept together with siblings in the same enclosure in the pet store -- while Robos can occasionally cohabit peacefully with other same-sex (so they don't breed) Robos, it is quite common, unfortunately, that they will fight, sometimes biting ears, sometimes rumps (lower back by the tail), sometimes faces :-( . Anyone attempting to keep pairs or multiple dwarf hamsters together must be very vigilant in monitoring and examining them for any fighting behavior or just wounds since fighting may happen when you're not around to observe it. Anyway little Chucky's ear tears (and any other past wounds) are long healed up, hopefully any trauma long forgotten.

Little chunky Chucky is cuter-than-cute and I love him very much!

Hammie Saturday night from sweet Syrian hamster boy Jingles, one of the cutest, floofiest (beyond merely "fluffy") guys I know! Jingles came to the hamster haven at the begnning of December as you can read about at https://tinyurl.com/mr3p9jd2. As I wrote there, Jingles was named by his kind guardian angel Lisa Ann, a treasured friend and wonderful wildlife rehabilitator and rescuer who contacted me about this poor hamster who was dropped off at Shelton CT Animal Control by someone who said they simply didn't want him anymore and left him there in a miserably small cage (as so many cages sold for hamsters are) 🙁 . Shelton AC only takes in dogs so Lisa took him home and contacted me. So Jenn, another friend and very kind volunteer, transported Jingles from Lisa to Hop Along Hollow in Norwalk CT, the amazing primarily bunny rescue run by dear friend Linda who is now a certified wildlife rehabilitator, too (specializing in but certainly not limited to opossums in addition to her current population of about 100 domesticated rabbits in need) -- as some of you know, I am Hop Along Hollow's "hamster division". So my bf Jim and I drove up to Linda's in Norwalk and picked up Jingles and brought him back here to the hamster haven.

Jingles was initially quite jumpy but now he seems to be quite comfortable when I pick him up and handle him and even give him some cuddling! He is as sweet as he is adorable (and very loved)!

Goodnight from sweet Twee, a very outgoing, absolutely adorable, and photogenic Russian dwarf hamster girl (Russian Campbell's-Winter White hybrid, the only two hamster species that can interbreed). Twee came to the hamster haven last November when she was a pup from an accidental litter as you can read all about at https://tinyurl.com/ye8cpdwt. What a little darling Twee is, I love her so much!

Definition of "twee" from https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/twee:
"Something is twee if it's a little too cute or overly adorable." 🙂

Night-night fromsweet, soft Fluffernutter, a gorgeous banded cream Syrian hamster boy who came to the hamster haven in May as you can read about at https://tinyurl.com/58uykfn4. As I explained there, Fluffernutter clearly hadn't been handled much, or had been mishandled, because he arrived extremely scared and skittish, but in just a number of days, Fluffernutter's true friendly personality emerged once he was happier in a much larger habitat with *two* big wheels in which he didn't have to arch his back, a sand bath for the first time, a variety of healthy food including a little fresh veggies every night, and nightly out-of-cage playground time. He is very outgoing now and even lets me give him cuddles. Of course I would love him regardless.

Hammie Saturday night from darling Donny, an adorable Chinese hamster boy who came to the hamster haven back in May 2022 as you can read about at https://tinyurl.com/4syvdwxx.

As I've written before, Donny is a bit of an introvert (whih I find to be true about many if not most Chinese hamsters) -- he doesn't really seem interested in interacting with me, but he doesn't seem to be nervous when I pick him up and handle him, no trembling and will take a treat from my fingers -- he just doesn't seek my attention. Each hamster has his or her own personality (just like any other pet or person, too!), and deserves to be respected and loved on their own terms. And I love Donny with all my heart!

Sleep tight from from pretty "panda bear" Syrian hamster girl Penny who came to the hamster haven July 2023 as I posted about at https://tinyurl.com/ydpktmwa. Sweet dreams from pretty boy Boyd, an adorable male Roborovski dwarf hamster here. Beautiful Boyd came to the hamster haven just in April as I wrote all about at https://tinyurl.com/mpajy33z -- he is still a very shy guy (as Robos tend to be) but I hope we'll be making more progress now that I'm home from the hospital and inpatient PT (for a total hip replacement) and able to get around better. Of course I love this little cutie so much, regardless!

06/08/2024

I am heartbroken to have to report that our darling Puppy passed away on Saturday (August 3, 2024) presumably from heart failure for which he was being treated. He appears to have passed peacefully in his sleep. As I posted last month at https://tinyurl.com/2tdykzn7, Puppy had been recently diagnosed with heart disease after he was exhibiting some breathing issues and weakness for which he was put on two medications (pimobendan and lasix) by the exotics vet, not as a cure but to treat symptoms and prolong his quality of life for a long as possible; sadly, this wasn't very long (though it is never long enough).

Puppy, an adorable "golden satin" Syrian hamster boy, came to the hamster haven November 2023 as I posted about at https://tinyurl.com/2p95vfcs, thanks to wonderful Yvonne, a very compassionate, animal-loving woman who had been fostering Puppy for several months before bringing him to me. Yvonne took him in from her neighbors who had become temporarily homeless after a house fire. Thank goodness Yvonne took him in -- he had had a very sad and even traumatic life until then, having been kept in a tiny 5 gallon aquarium, and then having survived the house fire, rescued by wonderful fire fighters in heavy smoke who were surprised that he even survived!

Puppy was originally called Teddy but I've had a hamster named Teddy here before, and I don't like to "reuse" names -- since "Puppy" was Yvonne's affectionate nickname for him, that's what his name became here. Over time, the original family (who had provided very few, as well as substandard supplies for him) made it clear that they didn't want him back and were going to advertise him for free on FB Marketplace, like craigslist a terribly risky venue to try to safely rehome any pet, which Yvonne was desperate to avoid for him. Even though she originally was just supposed to be fostering him for a few weeks, Yvonne purchased him a larger tank, a high-quality wheel, a sand bath with safe sand, a NiteAngel hide, many other accessories and food and treats, just so wonderful! She loved Puppy but she was going out of state and couldn't take him with her -- she wanted to make sure that he would go someplace that could find or provide a great home for him and found our rescue friend Sheena (Hamsters Home Rescue) in NJ who then contacted me since Sheena was beyond overwhelmed so I took Puppy in. I am so grateful to Yvonne (who has become a friend, too).

Until heart disease slowed him down, Puppy was a very, very active boy (perhaps making up for lost time!), as well as so interactive, loving his nightly playground time, as well as two different big wheels in his Prevue 528 Universal cage. He was so sweet and gentle and friendly, and I loved him and always will. I am missing him so much already.

As usual when a hamster dies, I will create and post a photo album in his memory sometime soon.
