A little and quick intro about me.

I am Louise from Louise’s Dog Academy. I am a wife to Anthony. I have 2 children and 3 fur babies. You will see loads of Ace my border collie. As he helps me to show you. He is 1 year 6 months old and well into he’s teenage years. Being a typical teenager.

I started my dog training world when I was 14 years old. I had my first dog Butch a springer spaniel. He was the best dog you could ever learn with being very calm, enjoyed learning and commands. I had a very strict dog trainer (Val) who I am still in touch with.
Though without Val, I wouldn’t have done and got to where I am without her. She had my best interest at heart and her learning I take on today. Though I’m not the strict and embarrassing trainer.
Then when I was 16 I went on to work professionally within a boarding kennels where the training helped loads for dogs and owners. I left to work in education with children, but 7 years ago I became a dog walker. Loved watching the dogs grow and owners enjoying their dogs. Absolutely have loved my journey and gained qualifications in dog behaviour so far to level 5. But I also love to learn so I’m sure I will be adding more to my collection.

Dog friendly pancakes 😋

Ingredients

50 g plain flour
50 ml water
1/2 ripe banana, mushed
1 free range egg
Instruction

Mix all ingredients in a bowl

Heat a non-stick frying pan on medium heat

Fry pancakes for 30 seconds on each side, if you’re up for a challenge shape into a dog bone

Instead of focusing on what you don’t want.

How about focusing on what you do want ?

So it could be walking to heel in a park.

An instant recall.

A calm dog when you have visitors at your home.

Lying on their bed when your cooking dinner.

There are loads of examples.

So, today have a look at when your dog is giving you something that you want.

Then reward them for that behaviour.

There are many opportunities while you’re at home or out on a walk.

Tips for dogs in a storm

Keep Them Busy
Distract your pet from the bad weather and offer a positive stimulus such as their favourite chew toy, puzzle toy or tug rope. It is a great way of mentally stimulating your pup and delivers two-in-one action; a mentally challenging treat puzzle as well as a fetch toy.

Shelter in a Safe Space
Find a nice spot in your home to create a comfy, covered den for your pet to relax in. This can be in their crate, on your bed, or even just under the table. Make it nice and cosy for them and ensure they have their favourite toys, treats and blanket.
This sheltered space will act as their safe haven and help reduce any noise levels caused by the bad weather. It’s helpful to shut the blinds to help shelter your pet from the visual stimulation of a storm.
Make sure this safe haven is accessible at all times so your pet can go back and forth with ease.

Prepare a Playlist
Calming music or some form of ‘white noise’ can help drown out any thunder noises or wind noises as well as helping your pet to relax and fall asleep. There are many ‘relaxing pet music’ playlists you can find on YouTube or other streaming platforms. Try slow classical music or even reggae and soft rock.

When are you recalling your dog on walks ?

Is it cause you have seen someone coming towards you ?

Is it cause you’ve seen something that they are likely to chase ?

Is it for another reason that you ALWAYS but them on lead for ?

This makes it predictable for your dog.

So you may have or get a dog that knows when he’s going to go on lead.

They may start to not want to go back on a walk.

Running off etc.

So how can you solve this problem, you become unpredictable.

You can call them randomly.

Put the lead on when there is nothing around or when you don’t need to.

Mix it up and most importantly have so much fun with it.

Did you know January 2nd is Science Fiction Day ? Me neither until yesterday.

January 2 was the date chosen in order to correspond with the official birth date of famed science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, who is thought to have been born January 2nd, 1920. Mr. Asimov wrote over 500 science fiction novels, and even coined the term “robotics” in his 1941 story “liar”

I must confess I’m not a big fan of science fiction books, yet I love a science fiction movie.

Did you know there are some famous science- fiction dogs ?

There’s Seymour from futurama. Einstein from back to the future- technically the world’s first time- traveling dog, and of course, Dr Who’s Marvellous Mechanical Mutt, K9.

Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want a dog who answers every command you give him with a “Affirmative “.

When it’s an absolute fantastic day, your really enjoying the view and the scenery.

Then you look around and you see your dog rolling in fox 💩.

He’s having so much fun rolling.

So you give the command leave and they carry on.

By the time they process and listen they are absolutely covered on their back with fox poo.

Yes that was me the other day.

My own dog can smell it a mile away.

So, it’s totally normal to have a day where something didn’t go quite right.

Has your dog ever rolled in fox poo ?

Start at the beginning with not so many distractions and build up. We want our dogs to be a success so need to help them first.

Ping pong recall

Great for all the family to do.

Can be done in the garden, at the park or on your walks.

To start, make sure every member of the family has some tasty treats or toys.
Take it in turns to call your dog, using your recall word.
After calling, wait for your dog to run over before marking and rewarding them with a tasty treat or some play with a toy.
Now, it’s someone else’s turn! Have another member of your family call your dog to them, and mark and reward in the same way.
The person who recalled your dog must be the one to reward your dog. Set everyone up for success by making sure that each person has the same value rewards.

Yesterday I had a fantastic day with the young leaders training at scouts. Some of the training was about communication. Which got me thinking of communication with our dogs. So here are 4 tips to help with your training. Tip 1 - Give your command once. Tip 2 - Use a consistent marker signal eg yes or a clicker Tip 3 - use hand signals as well as verbal. One of the things I do with my dog. Is play tunnel, you can teach them to go thru. You can hide their toys and get them to find them in the tunnel. You can practice wait It’s really fun to do.
