Happy muzzle up Monday from Dewayne 😍

Muzzles are used for a wide variety of reasons and can be a fantastic training tool; we love seeing owners be proactive and responsible in their use of them. The primary reason for a muzzle is safety. This could be the safety of the dog wearing it, other dogs, or people! A muzzle may be used if a dog is fearful, not social, needs a bit of extra space or eats dangerous things off the ground. Muzzles do unfortunately have a stigma; many people see them and generally assume a dog is aggressive or dangerous. This can be a hard pill to swallow when beginning the muzzle training journey. Our favorite saying is a muzzled dog is a safe dog 🙌🏼

Check out the blog post in our story for more information about muzzle training & different styles of muzzles!!

This was such an impressive recall challenge, all the dogs were enjoying free time and playing with each other in an outdoor space and immediately disengaged to run to Kara 🙌🏼 can your dog recall out of play?

Working on obedience out and about in the real world. Lots of distractions on this walk including dogs, bikes, cars, scooters, frisbees & birds. These good dogs were fantastic holding their stays and offering engagement through eye contact. If you’re struggling with your dog’s focus in these environments take a step or a few back. This may mean decreasing distractions, increasing the value of rewards, increasing the frequency of rewards or shortening the duration of the session or command!

Nail trimmings are often a huge source of stress for owners & dogs! It doesn’t have to be that way. Grizz & Lael are getting some pointers from Kara on how to make this experience easier! It is important to go slow in this process and gauge your dog’s comfort level. However, it is also an important part of healthcare so not something that can be skipped just because your dog doesn’t like it. Need a little help? Ask about about it during your next private lesson!

The American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen is a 10 part test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners. We recently hosted a 3 week class to practice & proof all the parts of the test to prepare 9 owner & dog teams for the test. All 9 teams passed with flying colors. Thank you to our wonderful judge ✨🏆

The ten parts are….
1. Accepting a friendly stranger
2. Sitting politely for petting
3. Appearance and grooming
4. Out for a walk/loose leash walking
5. Walking through a crowd
6. Sit, down & stay
7. Come when called
8. Reaction to another dog
9. Reaction to a distraction
10. Supervised separation

Rosie and Ollie building confidence in new environments and working on the leash walking manners in a new environment. They are both being walked on slip leashes because that is what they respond best to. Slip leashes are a combination of a leash and a collar in one easy-to-use design, making it the most versatile of all leads. They are unique in that they are designed to tighten under tension and release as soon as the tension is gone. They can be a great tool to use, with guidance from a professional trainer, to improve your on leash communication with your dog!

Field trips, field trips and more field trips!

The more unique places you train with your dog, the more reliable they will be in the long run. Training in new places can sometimes be frustrating. Is your dog not paying attention to you? Sniffing everything? Reacting to new distractions? This may mean you need to take a step back and build the strength of your obedience in lower distraction areas first. Or it may mean you need to reward at a higher rate or with a higher reward. Instead of getting frustrated next time your dog isn’t paying attention to you take a step back and look at the why. How can you help them do better? Our outdoor group classes, pack walks and on-site classes are great for practicing your training in new environment while being able to ask questions & work through challenges.

Vet visits can be stressful for a lot of dogs, and therefore their humans. Here are a few ways you can make them less stressful….
•• bring your dog’s bed into the exam room to help them relax while you are waiting
•• bring them a frozen kong, licki-mat or chew to distract them and stimulate them mentally while you wait or during the exam
•• if your dog has any special needs or specific struggles at the vet, call your vet and discuss these ahead of time. Your vet will very much appreciate this and will usually do their best to accommodate special requests if it will make life easier for your dog (and them….)
•• practice body handling at home so they are more comfortable during the physical exam

Teaching fun tricks, should you do it? What’s the point?

Teaching your dog to play dead is cute but how does it play into your training. Trick training is FUN. Most dogs love to learn and tricks tend to present a lower pressure training situation than formal obedience commands. Trick training can be a great way to bond with your dog and figure out how they learn best!

We are currently offered an AKC trick dog class and everyone is having a blast trying new things with their dogs! Pictured is Koda learning to “pray”.

The flexi-leash is a great tool to allow your dog a little more room to wander and sniff on walks. But when used wrong it can be dangerous and harmful to other trails users. How to use it responsibly:
••only use a flexi leash if your dog has a solid recall and solid obedience
••recall your dog and lock the leash at a shorter length when people and/or dogs are approaching
••be aware of your surroundings
••maintain the same expectations on the flexi-leash as you have on a regular leash, for example no pulling, no dragging you, no lunging at other people or dogs
••know your local leash laws, specifically the length of leash allowed

Training Dogs and Their Owners

If you are willing to do the work, Kara with Double K Canine Training will spend the time to truly help you and your dog. Are you trainable? Then so is your dog!

A truly trained dog has impulse control, frustration tolerance and a true working attitude. The dog trusts and believes their owner to handle each situation, with or without distractions. There are not many dogs that start off this way, and it is Kara’s passion to turn dogs into this well trained dream. A well trained dog starts with a loving and committed dog owner. Kara’s priority is to always train owners how to train and understand their dog. You will not find a dog trainer more dedicated to her clients.

Kara is a balanced trainer. A balanced trainer uses both rewards and corrections to train and rehabilitate dogs. It is the understanding that no two dogs learn the same and as some dogs can be trained with just treats, there are other dogs that can’t and this is okay. She is experienced in using a variety of training equipment and methods. Tools are only as good as the handler, and any tool can be abused when used incorrectly. Through education of the four quadrants of dog training, Kara will work with each dog and their owners to implement a training plan that the owner is comfortable with and the dog can thrive from.
