The fun drop-in class option for this term is hosted by dog trainer Emma Steinebery @brightstark9. Rally obedience is a team sport for you and your dog. In this class you will learn to navigate the world of competitive obedience. In a rally competition you follow a course of 10-20 different signs which list a variety of commands to complete with your dog. This class is a great way to focus on obedience in a fun new way!
@ksdt.colorado and her Jack demonstrating a fantastic course 🙌🏼
Any dog CAN learn new tricks, no matter their age, breed or size 🤷🏼♀️
But really, learning tricks is for all dogs. It is a fun bonding activity that tests your communication with your dog while also challenging both of you mentally. Here the group class was working on teaching an ‘around’ command with some added difficulty!!
The list of tricks you can teach is endless. Tell us a fun trick you’ve taught your dog ⬇️⬇️
Copper and Dolly in group class.
Copper is doing the obstacle course, which is considered active training while Dolly practices holding a down, which is considered passive training. Group classes are a great place to practice and proof your obedience, like dog stays, while other dogs are actively working, training and having fun. This is a hard challenge for Dolly because she would love to be the one doing the obstacle course. This is great for patience in all environments. It is also great if you have multiple dogs at home and want them to learn to wait their turn for meals, training or attention!
Training Tip Thursday 👏🏼
Kara from DK Canine Training talks about puppy raising and setting your puppy up to be successful in YOUR lifestyle!!
Kara & Koda working on homework for intermediate canine conditioning class with @ksdt.colorado.
Koda was not blessed with the best structure and struggles with some hip issues especially now that he’s getting older. Taking canine conditioning class and working on these exercises at home is helping him build muscle and strengthen his hips. This will hopefully help him stay active and pain free for much longer!

Koda’s new skill in canine conditioning 👌🏼
As a dog trainer it is so valuable to have friendships & working relationships with other dog trainers. @ksdt.colorado and @brightstark9 are too very prominent trainers in my life. We all excel and specialize in different areas of dog training and are available to each other to brain storm and troubleshoot training issues. This provides us all with three different perspectives and allows us all to continue our learning and expand our knowledge constantly.
This term Koda and I took a class hosted by @ksdt.colorado. Instead of being the teacher I was now the student, learning new skills with my dog. It was a great opportunity for both me and Koda and we learned so much about the world of canine conditioning!

Let’s talk recall training and ecollar training. In this video you will see Akira’s 🔥 recall. See that immediate sharp turn when she hears her name and that enthusiasm as she comes back? That is what we LOVE to see. Recall training is a long process that starts with a lot of positive reinforcement and rewards. When the command is well understood we layer in the ecollar to solidify the command. The ecollar was not used in this video, that enthusiasm is all from building positive associations with coming back. However, at this point in her training she should always have it on and would not be in an unfenced area without it. The reason for this is because if your dog does ignore you even once (yes even 1/100 times) we do not want them to reinforce and reward themselves for not listening. This builds the pattern that they only have to listen when they want to. This tool is a communication device and is very effective when introduced and used correctly.

Training classes involve play time, for dogs that enjoy this, and it is certainly their favorite part 😉
One of the best parts of being a dog trainer who specializes in good classes is watching play styles and appropriate play evolve. This is some of the best class play I have seen! The dogs split off in groups of two on their own and played really well with their respective partners.
This video features:
Cowboy + Higgins
Maggie + Auggie
Finn + Scout

Does your dog like the car? Getting in and out of the car can be scary or hard for some dogs. Working through all the steps slowly and with lots of positive reinforcement can help dogs overcome this challenge.

Whiskey is a 1.5 year old lab max who was rescued at 8 months old after being a stray dog.
He is focusing on overall manners, jumping, leash walking, excitability with dogs, barking and obsessive squirrel chasing in the backyard. He is already making great progress 👏🏼

Sometimes dogs and owners are able to make huge progress in just one session and sometimes it takes more than that. Every dog is an individual and reactivity can stem from many places.
In this session Kirby is working through his reactivity. About 10 minutes before this video was taken he had a very loud and dramatic reaction. His reaction included screaming, lunging and attempting to drag his owner towards Koda.
To help his owner work through this, Kara took the leash and utilized body pressure when he reacted. She then walked him back and forth several times, with lots of sit and leash pressure. Once Kirby had settled, she started to reward good choices for him seeing Koda and not reacting. Then she transferred the leash back to his owner for some more reps.
This was awesome progress for a short amount of time. He has such a great, dedicated owner that is committed to helping him keep making progress with his reactivity 🙌🏼

Akira first training session! She is a 7 month old Super Mutt. Training hike to focus on the basics. We did lots of eye contact, down, sit, heel, touch and down stay!
In this clip we are focused on longer duration with down stay and staying in a heel next to Kara while a dog passes. Good job Akira! 🐾🔥

LETS TALK ABOUT OFF LEASH LIFE ✨
Having your dog reliably trained off leash is a huge huge accomplishment. It probably took a lot of work, time and patience but you did it 👏🏼
Being able to have your dog off leash while hiking is an amazing feeling. It is relaxing for both you & your dog. But I want to take a moment to remind everyone of some basic trail etiquette we can all do to make off leash hikes even better. You never know if that person and/or dog approaching you on the trail likes dogs, is afraid of dogs or simply doesn’t want to engage with dogs. Seeing an off leash dog running at you can be intimidating and scary. This is why we always recall the dogs as soon as we see another person or dog approaching. They are either leashed or in a down stay off to the side of the trail while other’s pass. This shows other’s that you are in control of the dogs and won’t let them bother anyone or anything.
We want trails to be a safe and enjoyable place for everyone so let’s all practice proper trail etiquette 🙌🏼
If you are struggling with any of these components, reach out to us for a consultation. We can help you achieve all your goals for a better life with your dog!
