Sparkie the Retired Assistance Dog Follow my adventures as a retired autism assistance dog. An assistance dog is a dog that has been trained to assist with symptoms of their handler's disability.

Hi, I'm a twelve year old Border Collie x Kelpie called Sparkie, and I spent six years working as an autism and PTSD assistance dog for my girl, before retiring as her beloved pet. Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, assistance dogs are allowed to access non-pet friendly places to assist their disabled handler, including shopping malls, movie theatres, cafes and restaurants, hospitals, a

nd all forms of public transport. It against the law to deny access to an assistance dog. Asperger's Syndrome (also known as High Functioning Autism) is a disorder on the Autism Spectrum, causing my girl to have difficulty relating to other people, communicating and understanding, and struggles with sensory issues. Being forced to confront any of these things can overwhelm my girl, with the potential to send her into a meltdown. PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, is not just for war veterans. It can be caused by any trauma, usually involving death, or fear of death for the person or those around them. There are various things that can “trigger” a memory, or flashback, of the traumatic event, causing my girl to experience the feelings of the event over again. These stressful moments are often followed by physical pain, such as a headache. My jobs were to alert my girl when she gets anxious, guide her safely through overwhelming crowds, sit or lie on her to calm her down, and stand between my girl and strangers to stop them from coming too close.

It snowed at our place yesterday! The snow makes me so happy. 😍 My friend Tess (wearing the pink coat) was too busy sniffing things to play with me properly so I had to just run around by myself most of the time, but that was still fun.

Had a fun day out at the botanical garden this week. 😊

Our Story

Hi, I'm a ten year old Border Collie x Kelpie called Sparkie, and for the past six years I have worked as an assistance dog for my girl who has Asperger's Syndrome and PTSD. I’m now retired and enjoying a relaxing pet life. An assistance dog is a dog that has been trained to assist with symptoms of their handler's disability. Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, assistance dogs are allowed to access non-pet friendly places to assist their disabled handler, including shopping malls, movie theatres, cafes and restaurants, hospitals, and all forms of public transport. These stressful moments are often followed by physical pain, such as a headache or knee pain. My jobs were to alert my girl when she gets anxious, guide her safely through overwhelming crowds, sit or lie on her to calm her down or ease her knee pain, stand between my girl and strangers to stop them coming too close, and sometimes fetch items for my girl when her knee is too sore for her to move.
