LONG LINES are awesome!!! And that doesn’t mean a retractable!

Training Tip Tuesday: "Use a long line!"

This past weekend I took both of my dogs for a long walk around our neighborhood; we ran into THREE off leash dogs who each tried to approach us. This was so frustrating as someone who has a recovering reactive dog who needs slow intros, and just from a safety standpoint.

In today's day and age, the freedom to be off leash should be a PRIVILEGE to our dogs. We live in an over-crowded, busy world where having off leash freedom on busy suburban streets (in my opinion) is simply not a risk I would take with my own dogs. HOWEVER, if I did choose to take that risk, I would make damn sure my dog could reliably come to me from any distance and with any number of distractions, particularly prey animals such as squirrels and other dogs. (The first off leash dog we ran into chased us for half a block while the owner was screaming "COME" repeatedly at the dog. When the dog did eventually give up and go back to the owner, the owner CONTINUED to leave the dog off his leash *facepalm*)

If giving your dog more freedom is important to you but it's not safe to have them off leash or their recall isn't reliable enough then it's IMPERATIVE that you use a long line. A long line is a 15, 20, 30, or 50 foot line sometimes made of cotton, nylon, biothane, or other materials that functions as a super long leash (see the picture in this post). With dogs who are mostly reliable when being called to come you can let them drag the line so that they have freedom, but if a distraction presents itself you have an extra 15-50 feet to grab them BEFORE they decide to run. ALL good recall training should include long line training, and dogs should only be permitted off the line where it's safe and when you have enough practice under your belt to virtually guarantee that your dog will come!
