Six Interesting Facts about Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) for Columbus Day (October 11, 2021).

1. Columbus was not the first European sailor to visit the Americas. That honor goes to Leif Erikson who visited North America in the 11th century--yet has no holiday named after him.

2. Columbus did not belief the earth was flat, but he thought the Earth was smaller than it was and Asia was larger than it was. Thus he predicted Japan was only 3,700km from the Canary Islands rather than the actual distance of 20,000km.

3. Columbus made 4 voyages to the New World while living and one more round trip voyage after his death. On May 20, 1506 Columbus died and was buried in Spain. In 1542, his remains were transferred to the present-day Dominican Republic. In 1795 Columbus's remains were moved to Havana, Cuba. Finally, in 1898, the remains were moved back to Spain.

4. Upon returning to Spain in 1493 Columbus brought presents to Ferdinand and Isabella including three items unknown to Europeans: the to***co plant, the turkey, and a pineapple.

5. The "discoverer" of the New World never admitted that he had reached a continent previously unknown to Europeans, rather than the East Indies. Thus his appellation for the inhabitants of the lands that he visited as "Indios" Spanish for Indians.

6. Columbia National Wildlife Refuge, WA is the only unit of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's USFWS National Wildlife Refuge System to have a name derived from Columbus.
