🎄 Holidays are here, and so is ALL THE YUMMY FOOD – but not all food is safe for our pups! 🎄

Between busy schedules and festive gatherings, it’s easy for dogs to sneak a bite of something they shouldn’t. 🍫🧄 Some common foods can be toxic to dogs, and knowing what to avoid can save the day!

🍁 Happy Thanksgiving from D For Dogz! 🍁

This year has been an incredible journey—filled with gains, losses, and lessons. Losing Henry was tough, and after losing Diesel two years ago, I almost walked away from my work.

But I didn’t, and that’s because of you—your kindness, understanding, and unwavering support pulled me through. While life feels so different without Diesel and Henry, being part of your lives and your dogs’ journeys gives me purpose and joy. Thank you for trusting me to be part of your journey, for showing up with patience and love, and for making D For Dogz a family.

With love and gratitude,
Kaajal Tiwary

Thanksgiving is coming up, is your dog ready?

Instead of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best, put in the work now to prepare your dog for the upcoming holiday festivities.

If your dog struggles with guests, impulse control around food, jumping up or busy environments, think about how you can set them up for success. This might mean practicing training beforehand, setting up a quiet reprieve from the hubbub, making sure their exercise needs are met beforehand, and/or preparing long lasting treats to keep them busy.

Need support? We're always here to help.

🐾 Counter Surfing: A Canine Adventure or a Mischief? 🐾

Ever caught your dog in the act of “counter surfing”? You know, that cheeky behavior where they stretch their paws up to check out what’s cooking (or what snacks are waiting) on the countertop? 🐶🍕

🍱🍛🍤 Why do dogs counter surf? 🐕 🐕

👓 Curiosity 👓: Dogs are naturally inquisitive creatures, and they love exploring their environment. Counter surfing is just another way for them to investigate the world around them!

🐕‍🦺 🐕‍🦺 Instincts 🐕‍🦺 🐕‍🦺: Many breeds are known for their scavenging abilities, and the countertop can be a treasure trove of smells and goodies.

💞💞 Is it really bad behavior? Not necessarily! 💞💞

While it might not be ideal to have your dog rummaging through the kitchen, counter surfing is often a normal behavior stemming from their instincts and curiosity. Instead of viewing it as a bad habit, let’s see it as an opportunity for training and bonding!

🚫🚫 How can you train your dog to stop counter surfing? 🚫🚫

🤩🤩 Management 🤩🤩: First things first, keep counters clear of tempting items. If they can't reach it, they won't be able to get it!

🚥 Teach an alternative 🚥: Use positive reinforcement to teach your dog a more appropriate behavior, like going to their mat or bed when you're cooking. Reward them for staying put!

🧘‍♀️🧘 Practice patience 🧘‍♀️🧘: Consistency is key! Celebrate small victories and remember, training takes time.

Let's turn those counter surfing moments into learning opportunities! Share your funniest counter surfing stories or photos below! ⬇️✨

Hello & Welcome to D For Dogz!!!

I am told by digital marketing gurus I need an “introduction post” and here I was under the impression that half of Silicon Valley knows me 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈.

I’m Kaajal Tiwary, or KT. My passion is puppies, and I’m dedicated to helping new puppy guardians start on the right paw while guiding them through the early challenges of dog ownership. My mission is to transform energetic puppies into well-adjusted adult companions through my board and train programs in San Jose.

I have a special connection with fearful and anxious dogs, understanding that they require care, training, socialization, and attention to their physical and emotional needs. I offer Dogs About Town and Leash Reactive Dogs - About Town Membership Programs.

I keep myself updated on applied behavior analysis and related fields like canine nutrition and pain assessment to provide the best care. I work closely with private clients and collaborate with veterinarians and behaviorists for behavior modification.

I’m a strong advocate for continuing education, attending workshops and seminars to enhance my skills and knowledge, ensuring I bring the latest scientific insights to my training. My gentle and effective methods foster enjoyable relationships, setting dogs and their guardians up for a lifetime of good behavior.

In addition to being a Certified Dog Trainer, I’m a Reiki Master, Emotion Code Practitioner, Quantum Healing Practitioner, Melchizedek Healing Practitioner, and Numerologist. I became a professional dog trainer to pursue my true calling: helping pets and their people live better lives together.

Drop a ❤️ and a photo of your pup-dog for me and Diesel, without whom D For Dogz wouldn’t be possible. I look forward to getting to know you and your pup.

You guys I am SO PROUD of Judy and her dad. Judy is barely 5 months old. She settles calmly around other people and dogs, checks in with her dad when people approach or she sees a dog, walks on a loose leash, leaves food items on cue, and navigates most situations calmly.

At D For Dogz, our classes focus on teaching your dog what you want them to do instead of just saying what not to do.

Imagine a happy pup who understands your expectations and makes great choices—no stress, just smiles!

Ever feel like you’re saying “NO!” more often than you’d like or gently guiding your dog away from mischief? We totally get it! But what if you could turn that around? Check our upcoming classes to prepare your dog for the real world - https://dfordogtraining.com/dog-group-classes/.

"Selective Listening in Dogs: It's Real! 🐶🤔

Ever feel like your dog has selective hearing?

This behavior often emerges during adolescence (around 6 months to 2 years). It's a mix of curiosity and independence! Dogs can tune out a conversation with you easily when they’re focused on something more interesting.

Who can relate? I want to hear stories...

Did you know that adult dogs often engage in “self-handicapping” during play?

This is when a dog intentionally lowers its strength or speed to make play more fun and fair for their playmates, especially puppies or smaller dogs. It’s a great way for dogs to bond, learn social skills, and practice self-control. Plus, it keeps the play session lighthearted and safe for everyone!

Have you seen your dog do this? Let me know in the comments!

What do all these pups have in common?

They are either settled with an edible “chew toy” or they are “voluntarily checking in” with their person to know “ what are we doing next?”.

This was session 3 of our Basic Manners Class. The class focuses primarily on teaching our pups to “settle calmly” and “ask for permission” in any situation. We take our learning to public places in session 5.

It is so amazing to see the bond my human clients share with their dogs.

If you’re looking for a class that prepares you for life in public places, we have one starting on 9 November at Downtown Dogs in Palo Alto.

Halloween can cause stress and anxiety in dogs due to the sudden influx of unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells, including costumes and decorations. The constant ringing of doorbells and the presence of strangers create a chaotic environment that can overwhelm their senses. Additionally, the excitement and unpredictability of the holiday may lead to fear or anxiety, making dogs feel insecure in their own homes.

Preparing our dogs for Halloween is essential to reduce anxiety and help keep them calm amid the chaos.

TRAINING TIP: Teach your “what to do” instead of telling them “what you don’t want” them to do. In our first Household Manners Group class .sjc, the pups learned to settle with a chew toy in the presence of other dogs and people - not to mention in super close proximity.

When you have guests at home or you have a work meeting - give your dog a bully stick, a bone or a frozen food toy and have them settle on their bed while you focus on your list 💙.
