This is so true. We have an unpredictable, erratic, definitely loves to "LOVE" on our animals preschooler.

We have to be very diligent and proactive with our supervision of her interactions with our animals. We are constantly training and teaching her how to interact with them gently and appropriately.

It is a constant repetition daily with us showing her how to love them nicely. We have done this with all of our littles through the years.

Kids can be very intimidating to animals because they are loud, crazy ones just FULL of smothering love! lol!

It's a LOT for animals to absorb...so make sure you are setting them up for success. 🥰

As a licensed Family Paws Parent Educator and a certified behavior consultant whose speciality is fear and aggression, I work with a lot of families with dogs and kids. Often I'll get called when the baby is approaching toddlerhood and the dog is struggling. Many families are surprised at this because often the dog was comfortable during infanthood but then struggles during toddlerhood as the child gain mobility and independence. Let's be proactive not reactive. Plan ahead to keep everyone safe and prepared.

She's due for her heat anytime, so we are watching closely as she loves to do silent heats. 🙃

She will have a repeat breeding to our gorgeous tri color stud, Charlie, once her heat hits. ❤

I totally messed up her top knot, so she's got a slightly crooked look going on.. 😂

My Chicken Nugget (bottle orphan babies) foster litter is thriving in mama Denali's loving adoptive care. This video clip makes me giggle as Chicken (orange) falls into a blissful sleep while nursing. ❤️

They bonded beautifully to her 4 similar age kittens too. Its one big, happy fur family! 😸

Soon, they will all return to the fabulous East Texas Spca to begin their next steps towards adoption into great families. 👍

My maternity/nicu home is but a stepping stone for the precious pregnant moms and orphan neonates that we are so blessed to be able to care for. ❤️‍🩹

Fostering not only saves these innocent lives, but it also works its magic in our hearts too. There's definitely something special that takes place in your own life when you help save the life of another. 💯

Children must be trained to respect animals and give them appropriate attention only. Children are intense little humans...I know because I have raised several of them! Always supervise your children around your pets.

Just because your dog doesn't growl or bite when your child handles them roughly, it doesn't mean they should have to tolerate it. There are fallout effects to rough handling, whether it's from adults or kids. Dogs will tolerate things, until they don't.

People come to me after a dog bite and almost always say something to the effect of "we were doing XYZ and we've done that a million times before and he's always been "fine.""

But "fine" doesn't mean comfortable. Tolerating something isn't the same as actively enjoying something.

The onus is on the parent to teach children age-appropriate ways to interact with dogs.

The responsibility of safety is NOT on the dog. It is on the adults to supervise and to teach the kids, about safe interactions, about how to ask the dog for consent and to use management and barriers when an adult is not 100% actively awake and supervising. And to be clear, 100% active supervision means eyes on the dog and child, not just physically in the same room but on your phone or making dinner and distracted.

Let's reduce dog bites and increase safety for the sake of our kids and our dogs.

And as adults we need to model safe, appropriate interactions for children with our dogs.

ESSENTIAL ENRICHMENT

Imagine being kept in the same space each and every day. You know every blade of grass, every scent, every brick, every piece of fence. You have no books to read, no TV to watch, no one to talk to, no interaction with the outside world and absolutely nothing to do.

Would this situation begin to affect your behaviour and influence your emotional, mental or physical state? What about our dogs?

Many dogs live in this type of environment and yet we wonder why they develop behaviour problems, bark excessively, destroy the garden, become over excited, over aroused or maybe just shut down or sleep all day having completely lost interest in the world.

Many behaviour problems are caused by boredom, a lack of mental and physical stimulation or being confined to the same space every day.

Providing enrichment for dogs is so important for their wellbeing and really doesn’t require that much effort from us.

There are so many simple ways to provide enrichment. An online search for DIY enrichment ideas will provide lots of ideas.

Older dogs may enjoy a ride in the car, sitting at a window watching the world go by, bringing the outside in – sticks, cones, grass etc. from different areas placed in a box for them to rummage through and smell, dinner in the park, or even just playing some doggie music will make a difference.
