Today also saw a week 1 puppy course start at 11.00. Now the award of smallest pup to attend classes goes to Posie the Pomeranian. I think she has finally beaten young Tim Tam to the title and that’s going back to when I first started training.

Welcome to all the pups little and large and despite it being a little humid they all settled in well.

I look forward to the coming weeks with this great bunch of pups and caregivers.

Today was week 5 of the 9.30 puppy course and today the pups were exploring new sights, textures and objects with the ball pits, and jumps etc. Marley the lab had a super time in the ball pit and all the pups were oozing confidence with the new experiences which was great to see.

🚗 In my opinion walking a dog is like driving a car. You should be watching the environment so you are alert to hazards and dangers, and you should keep enough stopping distance to give you time to take action. ✋

📱If you are talking on your phone, or chatting to friends without one eye on the road then your attention is diverted, and incidents occur.

🌳 I have been visiting a few more places this week that have a higher dog population as Tilly is now much more relaxed and less challenging in busy areas. Due to her health, general over excitement and arousal around dogs when she was younger, in addition to limitations with the distance we can walk her, we have generally kept to quieter areas or where dogs are on lead.

😀 Having worked with her over the years she is now so much calmer, and dogs are less of a focus to her, although sadly we still cannot walk very far. Tilly will choose to ignore some dogs, get excited by ones she knows and if we do not know the dog, we will in most cases give them space to pass. I am lucky that she is very tolerant of other dogs and will choose appeasement and offer calming signals if unsure about a situation rather than react. ☺️

However, after several incidents this week with off lead dogs running at her barking, some growling at her and others offering other inappropriate behaviours, I feel if I were to visit these places regularly, then I could end up with her tolerance wearing thin. 😩

As I’m sure many of you will have experienced, I too have heard phrases like “he hasn’t done that before”, or “she doesn’t like big or black dogs”. Well in my eyes, if your dog does not like a certain type of dog then please call them back, put them on lead until that dog has passed. Avoid letting them charge that dog barking, especially when it is on lead in an area where most other dogs will be on lead and then throw out an excuse! Not only are you not supporting your dog with learning what to do in these situations, but you are putting my dog in a situation where she may feel threatened and could eventually choose to react.

❓What happens if my dog does react?

📢 You now have a dog that is even more fearful of big, black dogs and mine has had to shout loudly to be heard and may start to become wary of other dogs approaching.

🤦‍♀️ Sometimes things do happen unexpectedly so we have to deal with them at the time, but generally these incidents can be averted by being proactive.

❌ If you cannot recall your dog to put them on lead when needed, then they shouldn’t be off lead in the first place.

❌ If you know your dog is uncomfortable around certain things, then it is your responsibility to manage these situations and prevent incidents occurring as the bare minimum.

👂 I hear many stories especially of larger dogs who were happy and comfortable around dogs until they have been attacked or had constant experiences of off lead dogs barking and lunging at them. This is not ok!

✅ If you are choosing to let your dog off lead, then please respect those dog walkers who choose to walk past with their dogs on lead. They should not have to avoid these places to keep their dogs safe, especially in places where the off-lead dogs are the minority.

🌳 If in open spaces, then keep one eye on the environment. For example: if a dog and caregiver are minding their own business the other side of the park, either on or off lead, then your dog is not likely to be welcome, no matter how friendly your dog may be.

Let’s respect each other on our walks, learn to read our dogs body language and be proactive. Help your dog learn through, management, training and consistency and by doing that you will also be helping your fellow dog walkers and their dogs. If we work together then enjoying our outside spaces can be enjoyable for all.

If you feel that you and your dog could benefit from some assistance to help overcome any concerns or issues you may be struggling with then feel free to get in touch for a chat. Why not send me a DM or

I received these lovely pictures of Moss the gorgeous Labrador that I worked with a few months ago. Still looking as handsome as ever and it sounds like he is making some great progress. Thank you to his caregiver for sharing as it is always lovely to hear updates after our sessions have finished.

Make sure you teach your children safety around dogs from day one. Advocate for your dog as it is not a toy and keep both your child and your dog safe.

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Wow. Today I had my final session with the lovely Emma and Spike and they have made amazing progress 😀.

We have been working together over the past few months with helping Spike to overcome his separation distress.

They have put in the work and Spike achieved a 1 hour duration this week. 👌Very different from the dog that would howl as soon as the door closed back at the start.

There is still an away to go to achieve consistency and additional duration, but what a fantastic achievement and a great way to finish this session.

Here is Spike chilling and acing it during a short duration in today’s session.

If your dog is struggling with separation related behaviours, then why not get in touch to arrange a free 15 min discovery call to find out more about my services.

All sessions are held online so services can be provided nationwide.

Behaviour = Communication.

There is a tendency to put behaviour into one of two categories: 'good' or 'bad', labels which move us away from the realisation that we need to understand the 'why' of the behaviour.

The truth is that there is no 'good' or 'bad' behaviour. It is all simply behaviour. It is something that tells us about how the dog feels in that moment.

The 'good' behaviours, the ones we like, generally mean that the dog is happy, relaxed, joyful, excited, and these are occurring in a context that we humans like.

The 'bad' behaviours will see the dog doing things we don't like, such as barking a lot, pulling on the lead, growling, etc. These we can find problematic, and we will often want those behaviours to stop.

The most important thing we can do is look at the situation and try to work out why the behaviour is happening. Is the dog barking and/or growling because something is making them uncomfortable in that situation? Are they pulling on the lead because they haven't really been fully shown how to walk on a loose lead? Are they trying to run away from something that has scared them?

When we can understand the why, we can begin to understand what our dogs need in that situation and, if the behaviour is one that we find difficult and shows that the dog is struggling in a situation, we can find kind and gentle ways to make it easier on both of us.

If you have a dog who is struggling in certain situations you may find my on-demand 'Supporting a 'Reactive' Dog' webinar useful. The link is in the comments.

Thank you for all your responses. I have exceeded the numbers I needed so the questionnaire is now closed so I can get underway with collating all the data. You are all amazing 🤩

❓Do you or have you used a secure dog exercise field?

If yes and you are currently a dog owner, then could I kindly ask for a few minutes of your time?

I’m currently collecting data for my dissertation in relation to the Advanced Diploma in Applied Animal Behaviour (level 6) and it would be amazing if you could complete the short questionnaire via the following link for me 👇

https://forms.gle/cFcZgdNwPmL1SCcj9

I am researching the reasons behind secure dog field usage looking to see if dog behaviour issues are the main reason behind their popularity.

It should take around 3-5 minutes to complete.

If would also be amazing if you could share this post, or alternatively the link with any friends or family who may fit the criteria, as the more responses I can get the more reliable my study will be.

Many thanks in advance for your help and support.

Meet Bertie the stunning Golden Retriever. (These are I breed that I have rather a soft spot for 🥰).

We are working on some basic training to help him as he goes through the challenges of adolescence and here he is in all his glory.

We had a great first session last Friday so I’m a few days late in posting his picture.

Well done team Bertie and I can’t wait for our next session. 😃👍

A big welcome to the utterly adorable Rocky the cavapoo and his family who started their puppy training journey with me this week.

They all made a great start looking at some foundation exercises and young Rocky decided that training was rather tiring so took himself off to bed at the end of the session for a little snooze 😴 💤.

I look forward to my next session and am excited to see him grow and to be part of his training journey.

It was lovely to meet the latest group of dog and pups for their first class yesterday.

This current class is a mixed course so we have a couple of slightly older pups attending. Despite only a few months difference in age there was a bit of a size difference.

Despite this they all settled in well and made a great start on their first session. I look forward to the coming weeks and watching them progress.

These are some examples of displacement behaviours and serve as indicators of the dog's internal state which can provide valuable insights into their emotional well-being.

Displacement behaviours arise when an animal faces conflicting motivations/ feelings for two or more behaviours, leading to an unrelated action. For instance, birds might peck at grass when torn between attacking or fleeing from a threat, while humans may scratch their heads when indecisive.

Context matters when interpreting animal behaviour. EG: Sniffing and scratching could be due to various reasons like being itchy, exploring scents. Understanding the environment and situation helps in accurately deciphering the dog’s actions.

In interpreting body language, subtle cues matter too. A relaxed dog typically has ‘loose’ muscles, a ‘soft’ eye, and their tail held in the breeds natural carriage, and may pant gently. A stressed dog might have tense muscles, mouth shut, a lowered/ ‘stiff’ tail, flattened ears, and avoid eye contact. Understanding body language in canine communication helps distinguish between comfort and discomfort in the dogs demeanour.

These behaviours can also occur when an animal is hindered from engaging in a highly desired behaviour. Often, out-of-context behaviours provide comfort to the animal, like scratching, grooming, or sniffing.

In animal behaviour evaluations, displacement activities serve as indicators of unmet behavioural needs. For example, humans display self-directed behaviours like fidgeting in stressful situations, indicating negative emotions.

When a dog displays displacement behaviours, these are actions that seem out of place. These behaviours are often seen when a dog is unsure how to react in a particular situation.

This typically happens when the dog experiences conflicting emotions like anxiety, stress, or frustration, and serves as a way for the dog to release tension, or cope with the mixed feelings they are experiencing.
