This week has been a very tough one. We recently received some bad news about Luca’s health, and sadly yesterday was his last day with us.

I can’t even put into words how much of an impact Luca has had on my life. He taught me so much about love, and patience, and sparked a huge passion for understanding canine behaviour. I will always love him and hold a huge space in my heart for him - and I am so grateful for the time we had together, even if it doesn’t seem long enough. 💔

Luca had such a soft side to him that myself and his dad were lucky enough to see - it was an honour to know how much he trusted us to love and care for him.
It has been amazing to be able to achieve milestones together, and to see his confidence grow as the months and years went on. We had so many adventures together, and he was even able to expand his circle and make friends of both human and canine form, which was just an absolute pleasure to witness.
Looking back through our photos made me realise how much we had achieved and how much we had enjoyed life together. So many amazing, happy memories that we shared.
Together we made an amazing team, and I wouldn’t have changed it for the world.

He spent this week being showered with love, being spoiled rotten with treats and basking in the sunshine in the garden or on his favourite walks. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect last few days with him.

I am so grateful that he came into our lives, and will love him, immeasurably, forever.

🐾 ZIGGY 🐾
I have been working with the lovely Ziggy for quite a few weeks now, prepping him for a pet sit in May when his mum and dad get married abroad.
Ziggy is an incredibly nervous boy, and it takes a lot for him to fully settle around new people. For the past few months we have been doing 30 minute pop-ins with his family around, slowly building up interactions and progression into the home, whilst staying vigilant around Ziggy’s comfort.

He has done absolutely amazingly, and is now able to relax and interact much more frequently and comfortably.

His Rommie sister, Summer, couldn’t be less bothered by my presence and is always happy to say hi, especially when there are treats involved! 🤣💛

🌟 THE ROLE OF PAIN ON BEHAVIOUR 🌟

We had a vet check-up for my lovely Luca this morning due to some behavioural changes which raised some concerns around potential pain / discomfort.

Luca has already been diagnosed with hip dysplasia and arthritis, and we have noticed that when he is particularly uncomfortable there are some telltale signs:

⭐️ Increased reactivity to dogs and people
⭐️ Reluctance to walk / walking at a slower pace
⭐️ Reluctance to get in & out of vehicles
⭐️ More sensitive about being touched

It was agreed at the vets that he appears more lame on his right hip than he was on his last visit, and he is now being put on a new pain trial and is booked for scans on Monday.

Vet visits are incredibly stressful for Luca, so he
is mildly sedated for visits - however even with this in place he still struggles massively. Luckily we have the most amazing vet (shout out to Rohan at Vets for Pets Prenton, who is an absolute godsend).
Due to his reactivity and touch sensitivity, we also find that filming Luca’s behaviour / gait on walks / in the home, and showing it to the vets on a visit, is much more conducive to a successful discussion and diagnosis.

If your dog suddenly displays a change in behaviour such as increased reactivity, it is really important to consider the role of pain and discomfort. It’s often overlooked but can have such a huge impact on how your dog responds to their environment.
Yaz at .pooches has some absolutely fab material on this if you’d like to learn some more - I will be attending her course in April with and I absolutely cannot wait. ☺️

Please welcome the lovely Guinness to the team!
Guinness is almost 7 and has raced almost 100 times 😢 He has now found a lovely home with his new sister Maeve and is being (rightfully) spoiled by his new mum&dad! 💛🐾
