Within the last month, The Stone County Sheriff's Office has responded to Tabatha Weddington's residence, in the Big Level Community. Deputies responded to the residence in reference to complaints of her dogs running around on other's property. However, upon speaking with Tabatha, the dogs were back on her property.

Tabatha advised she would contain the dogs and deputies also advised her of resources available to surrender the puppies, if she chose to.

On August 24th, a concerned citizen reported (6) puppies were at the Red Creek Bridge, near Highway 26. The abandoned dogs were without food, shelter, and a clean adequate water source. Deputies secured the animals and they immediately began to eat.

Through investigation, review of body camera footage, and photographs, investigators were able to identify the dogs as belonging to Tabatha Weddington.

These dogs were found approximately ten miles from Weddington's residence. Further investigation revealed Weddington brought the dogs to the bridge on Highway 26.

All facts and circumstances were presented to Stone County Justice Court Judge Kevin Hines. Judge Hines signed warrants, charging Tabatha with (6) counts of Cat or Dog, Simple Cruelty. Tabatha was issued a $500.00 bond for each charge, totaling her bond at $3,000.00.

The Sheriff's Office would like to remind people, other resources are available to people to surrender animals safely. There are also programs and assistance with the spay and neutering of pets.

If you see animals being dumped, please get a tag number or suspect description, and report it to the sheriff's office.

🐾 PSA for Today: Plan for Your Pets' Future 🐾

It's crucial to make a plan for your pets as you age or discuss what will happen if you are no longer able to care for them due to illness or death. Our local shelters are overwhelmed, and we often receive calls from individuals who can no longer care for their pets due to health or age-related issues.

While animal welfare professionals strive to help, it's often not feasible to take in multiple adult pets at once.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Make a plan for your pets' future care.

Discuss your wishes with family and friends.

Consider setting up a pet trust or designating a caregiver in your will.

Our shelters are doing their best, but there are rules, regulations, and guidelines that must be followed. Your understanding and patience are greatly appreciated as we work to help as many animals as we can.

Are you considering giving away kittens for free?

Here's why that's not the best idea. "Free kittens" often lead to even more free kittens due to unchecked breeding. This contributes to the overpopulation crisis, leaving many cats without homes and leading to overcrowded shelters. Free pets are also at a higher risk of ending up in irresponsible homes, as the lack of a fee can attract people who are not fully prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership. Spaying and neutering your pets can help prevent this cycle and ensure that every kitten has a better chance at a loving, stable home.

****Update as of late last night****. Unfortunately due to the severity of this poor fellas colic and heat exhaustion…extremely elevated heart rate, temperature, lack of gum color and shock had set it. The veterinary teams on site but agreed that it would be most humane to euthanize him. This is not the out come we ever hope for however these are the unfortunate events that happen. Everything that could be done was done. We appreciate all the assistance from the local vet teams from PICAYUNE VETERINARY CLINIC and Watts Veterinary Services and everyone involved in trying to help this poor fella. His owner did finally come forward late in the evening....unfortunately bad circumstances for all involved.😔😔

Please remember we still need support even when the outcome is not in our favor as we still have several bills to cover at this time! With out our community's support we would not be able to help in these circumstances!

💸💸Estimated vet bills for the emergency visit, attempted life saving procedures preformed and euthanasia estimated $1000-$1500
Excavator/burial fee $350

Any donations are appreciated or direct donations can be made to our account at Picayune Veterinary Clinic!
