These new designers from our long time friends at Sea and Reef Aquaculture are truly stunning. We think they look a bit like mini Orcas, what do you think?

This Sea & Reef designer clownfish strain is so new it does not have a name yet. To find out why and how you can help name it go to our website and/or pick up a copy of the new Sep/Oct issue of Coral Magazine.

No, these aren’t exactly your childhood goldfish bowls. The world of competitive aquarium design, or aquascaping, is just as difficult, expensive, and cutthroat as any other sport but requires expertise in many different fields to guarantee success. Aquarium designers possess large amounts of expertise in biology, design, photography, and excel in the art of patience, as individual aquascapes can take months if not years to fully mature into a completed landscape.

The Incredible Underwater Art of Competitive Aquascaping

Hypselodoris apolegma This particular Nudibranch is considered reef safe feeding mainly on algae and detritus. However caution should be observed that most nudibranchs are very difficult to keep alive and healthy within a captive system and are usually much better off left in their natural environment.

Commonly known as a Blue Dragon nudibranch. It spends its life floating on the surface of the ocean, much like the Violet Sea Snail. They feed on the poisonous Man of War Jellyfish, collecting the animal’s toxins and storing them in little sacs on the end of their feather-like “fingers.” The Blue Dragon can produce a much more powerful and deadly sting than the Man of War due to its ability to store the poison. The Rainford's Goby is easy to keep. Their best behaviour is exhibited when five or more are kept together. The Rainford Gobies sift sand to find the worms and small creatures that live in the sand. Occasionally people mention they eat algae in the sandbed but only on accident as they are sifting the small pieces of algae in the sand for copepods or spaghetti worms.

Unlike many gobies, the The Rainford's Goby spend most of their time hovering in the water column, not in repose on the substrate. The Rainford's Goby availability in the hobby corresponds with the increased popularity of reef aquariums. Although this fish will not harm sessile invertebrates, and is thus a suitable addition to the reef aquarium, it really does best if kept in a tank with filamentous algae. If the tank does not support an algal crop, it will often become emaciated.

With the exception of closely related species, the Rainford's Goby is rarely aggressively toward fish tankmates. If housed with larger forms, it is likely to be picked on if the tank is small. It may fight with the similarly-shaped Hector's goby (Amblygobius hectori).

Chrysiptera cyanea or better know as the Blue Damsel is often suggested to beginner saltwater aquarists because they are very hardy and cycle well during the first few months of the aquarium setup. However, buyers should be ware as these fish become very aggressive toward their tank mates as they mature.

Hundred thousands of times they have already been photographed. And yet, clownfish are still one of the favorite subjects of underwater photographers.

The Rhinopias frondosa also known as the weedy scorpionfish has no commercial value for fisheries, but commands a high price in the aquarium trade. Although they can be found in the U.S. and Europe, they are mostly exported to Japan where they fetch a very high price. Rhinopias are highly sought after by aquarists who collect rare and unusual species. Most are poisonous and should be handled with great care. Aquarists with children should avoid them.

The Clarion Angelfish is now being aquacultured thus decreasing the need to harvest them from the wild. Previously they retailed for up to $4,000, however; with them now being captive bred we should see a dramatic price drop in the future.

The vast majority of the species' population occurs at a single location in the Revillagigedo Islands, where it is restricted to reef habitat with an estimated area of occupancy of less than 50 km2.
