Y'all, I had to share this post from the incredible Pali Boucher of Rocket Dog Rescue because there couldn't be a more deserving, hard-working, super committed group saving and adopting out animals who need another chance at the life they deserve. Times are tough and everything is très cher, so please donate to RDR if you can! And if you're in the Bay Area/California, check out the sweet dogs they have available for adoption, or fostering. Thanks! ❤️🐾🐾

Times are uncertain.
Donations are low.
Shelters are in crisis.
Rescues are frayed at the edges.
We’ve all been hearing it.

But how does this look in real life?

It’s struggling to keep up with the skyrocketing veterinary expenses. Then paying off a huge bill, just to have an emergency dropped at our doorstep and the bill shoots back up again a week later.
It’s the need to constantly secure resources that were once easily accessible.
It’s increasing numbers of animals left out on the street if they are lost, have medical issues or if owners are forced to move.
It’s hundreds of calls for help daily that we can’t even get to.

It’s a real thing .. and we’re going through it.
And to be honest.. It’s been rough to keep things on track, steady and strong this past year; it’s dimming our glow.
But since lives are literally at stake, failure is not an option.

Our dedication is strong. Our team, steadfast and true.

We usually refrain from asking for donations every time we take a medical emergency case since it’s a LOT.

But friends - we have to keep our doors open and our bills paid. So, we gotta do it - we are 100% in fundraising mode!
Here’s the plan:
Instead of begging you all to donate on the daily, we will be hosting a series of fundraisers, some big, some smaller. Some online.
The exciting thing is, we throw great parties and we get to hang out in real life!

So here we are, shamelessly hitting you up for your skills and resources.
Do you have an event space, or want to host a fancy house party? Or if you have fundraising expertise - reach out to us!

Do you have anything to donate to our silent auctions ? Art, get aways, salon certificates, dinners, animal supply baskets , jewelry, hotel stays, dog walking services, fancy in-home chef experience, anything cool or unique? We need it!

Every bit of effort to help, every contribution received, will go directly towards keeping our doors open, our hearts shining, and will enable us to do what we do best, save lives!

Please email [email protected] or text 415-756-8188, if you can help with any of the above.

He may be a giant of a dog, but he's still "my baby" Bear - starting at 4-5 months to six years old now. A love bug and goof ball, he LOVES people. ❤️🐾🐾

If you have a dog, check out this article, friends:

"As a veterinarian focused on muscular skeletal problems, I have a love/hate relationship with the ball. While many dogs clearly adore chasing them, too often owners use this activity as a shortcut to tire their dogs out, leading to repetitive soft tissue and joint injuries.

This doesn’t mean you should never throw the ball for your pup, but you should definitely consider how you are going about it and what kind of ball you use. Here are some important tips for safer play with your ball-obsessed pal."

My first-time sit with this little terrier mix cutie has been a sweet bonding experience. He has a puppy face, but he's 11 years old and he still has the fire inside. This Bernal beastie is also a big love bug, a keen house guard, and seemed to be in a contented trance last night while lying on his back in my arms as I brushed his belly and legs. Gentleness is the key. ❤️🐾🐾

[Alexandra Kay, board president of the Bay Area Alliance for Animals in San Carlos, said another cause of shelter overflow is the lack of awareness on how much maintenance and expense is involved in taking care of a small animal.

“It takes a little bit of time for these things to add up, to know that care is very expensive,” Kay said. “Pet food is very expensive. Flea treatment is very expensive, and that’s also saying that nothing goes wrong with your animal, like needing surgery for chronic conditions.”

James mentioned that people buying from breeders raises a problem, as well.

“If people would learn more about the joys of adopting shelter animals and saving their lives perhaps more people would adopt versus buy,” James said.]

It’s becoming commonplace in open-intake shelters and rescue facilities across the Bay Area: The number of unadopted pets is growing; animal caretakers and staff are stretched thin; and efforts by local municipalities to provide care and comfort to every animal surrendered is becoming increasingly...

Thanks Ren Volpe and Bay Woof!

"While occasional stress is unavoidable, putting your dog in situations where they have the chance to lunge and bark will set your training back. More exposure to upsetting things is not a fix for reactivity, and repeated and chronic stress can lead to poor physical and behavioral health. Working with a reactive dog is like filling a bucket: each time your dog sees a trigger (another dog, a skateboard, the UPS guy) and nothing upsetting happens, you are filling the bucket with positive associations. Conversely, each time your dog rehearses anxiety or fear-based behaviors, the stronger these reactive behaviors become." Read on...

Pinky needs our help! https://www.givemesheltersf.org/contribute.php
Read about Pinky's story https://mailchi.mp/givemesheltersf/pinkysurgery

As with any rescue, facing continual challenges, we occasionally find ourselves with a difficult decision to make. The conundrum for a rescue is how to balance funding to support one cat with extraordinary needs.

Pinky's story...
Pinky was rescued as a favorite from Hesperia Shelter in Southern California. This 6-year-old was picked up as a stray with a wound on his neck and quickly captured the hearts of everyone he met, easygoing, mellow, affectionate, and personable. After being transported to GMS and working with one of our vets to resolve the wound it became clear it was a more serious situation than anticipated. After repeated visits to numerous vets with no improvement, prompted us to seek a dermatologist. After repeated visits and a number of different treatment protocols, still no resolution.

It was suggested we seek a specialist at UC Davis. The Head of Dermatology was equally perplexed and recommended a deep tissue biopsy with additional culture and sensitivity. It was diagnosed as an unusual case of MRSA methicillin staph (antibiotic-resistant staph infection). She referred us for a surgical consult at a specialty clinic. After almost a year with little resolution, using a host of antibiotics and protocols with slight improvement but never resolved, the surgeon recommended that the best outcome would be to do more extensive diagnostics and to surgically close the wound.

The vets concur that Pinky is healthy otherwise and feel strongly with surgical intervention he can heal and find his forever home. Do we expend our resources to save one life? We feel the resounding answer is YES! Can you help us out to defray some of the cost (estimate $7200-9100) of the surgery?

Anything raised beyond the cost of Pinky's surgery will go to help our other kitties in need. Thank you for your support!

From the bottom of our hearts, the Give Me Shelter team thanks you!

I am usually in the moment while pet sitting and forget to share photos of my sweet "fur clients" but I'll try to rectify that, starting today. This week I'm taking care of two tiny canine cuties, ages 16 and 10. Snoozing and cuddling is the name of the game for these two love bugs! The younger one was recently adopted (I believe from Muttville Senior Dog Rescue) and is a bow-legged sweetie pie named Allison, aka Ali. Then there is elder little Gigi, a sweet-tempered and freaking adorable girl, whose feline buddy passed away a few months ago. We are all so sad about the death of our beloved Kitten, a floofy love bug who will be dearly missed.

This sweet little nugget is such a love bug and I'm lucky I get to pet sit him pretty frequently. I know these crazy storms freak out some animals, but he's been pretty chill - though he was on alert yesterday when the wind rocked the windows hard. He enjoys "cat TV" on YouTube. ❤️🐾🐾 How has your fur baby been doing during these storms?

I love caring for people's beloved fur kids and their homes and am so grateful for my wonderful clients - even more so when I receive a testimonial like this one:

"Sue has been our #1 go-to for dog/house sitting for several years now, and I am so grateful to have found her. Sue defines professionalism - she is proactive and clear in her communication, extremely well organized, and has been incredibly reliable throughout the years we've known her. She is also very kind, generous, and excellent with our dog, Bailey. I know that Sue takes amazing care of Bailey and our home while we're away. It's such a relief to know that Bailey is in such good hands with Sue when we're out of town - Bailey is always happy and relaxed when we return and our home is always spotless. Bailey has had some medical issues over the years, and Sue has always maintained any medication/exercise regimen that she's used to - including taking Bailey to vet appointments! We really feel blessed to work with Sue - highly, highly recommend her services to anyone who is looking for a pet/house-sitter in the SF area!"

Ugh, so awful! It's unimaginable to me how anyone could neglect or mistreat an animal, but it seems most likely in a large group environment like Wag. I've heard terrible stories about boarding facilities over the years. 😪 It's SO much better to have a trusted, recommended sitter (like me) stay in your home with your fur baby/ies, where they feel safest and most comfortable and receive continuous love and care with the focus on just them. ❤️🐾🐾

Today is one of those days I dread as a pet sitter: I just found out that one of my longtime beloved fur clients passed away recently. 😭 Triad made it to his 15th birthday, which is amazing, but he will be greatly missed by his family and by me, his "Auntie Sue." I'm not sure how his nephew, Bowie, will be without him. Even when I last took care of them in September, while he'd slowed down a lot, he still loved to chase endlessly after their toys - and after Bowie. Darling Triad, we love you so much. Rest in peace, sweetheart. ❤️🐾🐾
