Poll time. I'm curious!

If you have a dog, or work with dogs, are you a:

A. Dog on left, leash in the left, treat with the right
B. Dog on left, leash in the right, treat with the left
C. Dog on right, leash in the right, treat with the left
D. Dog on right, leash in the left, treat with the right
E. Left...right...left...are you kidding? My dog walks wherever he wants and I do my best to hold on for dear life.

Where you feed is where your pup will learn to walk!

to Day Training puppy Gus practicing leash manners during his socialization field trip.

Although I don't require "heel" for neighborhood or park walks, it's still nice to build a reinforcement history there so your dog can volunteer to assume that position.

Meet Chloe!

Her family reached out for some training help shortly after bringing her home.

She was a bit uncertain about me during our first session, but just about decided the Treat Lady was alright by the end of our second session.

Puppies are a lot, and there's a lot for both ends of the leash to learn. Training at Koinonia is personalized and comprehensive to make raising your puppy a success!

When it comes to reactive dogs, Plan A is to avoid putting the dog in a position where he's likely to react.

But sometimes things don't go as planned.

to Sal's Day Training outing when things definitely did not go as planned. Watch to see how I got us out of a very not-great situation.

Willow and Mom learned about Implied Leave It today.

"Leave It" was not on Mom's Wish List, but learning this skill indoors with food as the distraction gives Willow a chance to practice her "look at Thing then look at Mom" skill in prep for working on her dog-reactivity.

I ALWAYS prefer to trade a dog or puppy for their treasure instead of simply taking it away.

Reaching in to remove something they possess and are enjoying isn't very nice and can trigger some yucky feelings.

Instead of creating a situation where the dog's nose, his treasure and your hands are all sharing the same real estate, toss some treats away so your dog voluntarily leaves his treasure *then* remove the item. When he comes back, give another treat as a consolation prize.

to me Trading instead of Taking with these two.

(If your dog actively guards his treasures and displays aggressive behaviors when you try to remove them, please do NOT try this. Contact me and I'll connect you with a professional who can help you!)

These three are part of my Live-In Sitting program.

They take a short car ride as part of their daily routine, and it is VERY. EXCITING. Indy (charcoal) and Romeo (silver) like to throw in their best bulldozer imitations to make things even more fun.

I find the mad rushing at doors decidedly less fun.🤪So we did some training!

Is this exactly how I would normally train these skills? No.
Did it reduce the chaos? Yes.
Did the dogs have fun? Yes.

I call it a huge win.

Now accepting dog-reactive dogs for Live-In Sitting!

What's Live-In Sitting?
Unlike traditional overnights or drop-in visits, a live-in sitter moves into your home full-time while you travel.

Exclusive, one-on-one attention means your precious doggy never faces long days or nights alone.

Imagine *not* worrying about your dog while you travel!

Start now!

🎇 On July 4, many animals become startled or frightened by the noise of fireworks. This may cause them to flee from familiar environments and people, and sadly become lost.

🔖 Ensure they are wearing their tags and that their microchips are current with correct contact information. New technology includes GPS collars and geo location tags.

🙉 Provide safe zones and sound buffers indoors to minimize stress.

🐕‍🦺 If they must go outside, they must be on a leash.

I didn't do much work on Rosie's face yesterday because I wasn't sure how I was going to get ALL those stickers out.

Some of them seem to have worked their way out overnight (aided by her rubbing against the furniture) but they're not all gone.

This set-up is proving the most successful.
👍 A handful of treats gives her something to focus on
👍 Putting the treats on the table encourages her to keep her head up so I can see what I'm doing
👍 I can easily reach the treats to reward her
👍 A limited supply of treats keeps ME from letting the session go too long
👍 Coming from behind seems less annoying?

When was the last time your dog got to "be a dog"?

Does he get opportunities to engage in species appropriate behaviors like smelling, tracking and digging?

I LOVE harnesses for protecting a dog's sensitive neck, giving me good control, and keeping the dog secure.

But not all dogs love harnesses.

Some dogs struggle with the getting dressed part, and some struggle with the being dressed part.

to Butch learning to nose target the neck hole of his harness. Allowing your dog to come TO the harness instead of the harness coming AT him can build better feeelings about getting dressed.

What does training look like?

Here's an uncut version of Simone's long mixed session this week. We worked multiple skills, multiple times over 5 minutes and she was there for it!

24/05/2024

I love problem solving!

to puppy Breeze learning to load into the car on her own. She had a history of being rewarded for getting onto her cot, but she was also developing a history of avoiding the car. By breaking it down, giving her choices, and using rewards SHE found rewarding, we were able to make some very quick progress with her!

22/05/2024

I thought it might be fun to teach Simone to unroll a rug!

She's already VERY good at shoving hard with her nose in a very similar context so I thought it might transfer to this trick and play to her strengths.

If you've ever worked with me, you know treats play a HUGE role in my work as a doggy problem solver. Sometimes I joke that my approach could be described as, "strategic, generous feeding."

Flashback Friday to Mia showing off her default Leave It!

I teach this using an errorless approach. This means:
👉I make it very easy for the dog to get it right
👉I gradually make it harder
👉I don't use mistakes to teach the dog

Welcome to Training Ebony and Family!

They have several goals including reducing her intense leash pulling so they can actually walk her.

We took her out front for an evaluation at their first session this week and discovered she's a bit anxious out there. Improving her leash manners will involve helping her feel safe and comfortable enough to engage with the human holding the leash.

She's also not a huge fan of her harness so we started an exercise to make that a more pleasant experience for her.

Cashew and Family have been working hard on training this last month!

One of their goals is improving his table manners. This guy will take the food right off your plate if you give him a chance.

We introduced an Implied Leave It exercise several weeks ago and leveled him up to a dish of real human food on the floor during his session this week. Way to go, Cashew!

Copley and Family finished their Training program last week! 🎉

He has developed quite the love affair with the backyard rocks, and his family really struggles to remove them so we finished up with some tactics to help him become more cooperative in releasing his treasures.

Puppy People!

I have openings for overnight puppy sitting in May.

This premium, behavior-minded care service is designed for 8-20 week old puppies who are too young for traditional facilities or drop-in sitters.

Instead, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer lives in your home, with your puppy, and orchestrates his daily routine to ensure his behavior and your home both stay intact!

Space is very limited so reach out ASAP if you're traveling and need a puppy nanny.

Puppy Copley and Family learned about Implied Leave It during their Sniffari lesson this week.

For Leave It, I like the dog to stay away from the thing AND look at the handler. Giving the dog something *to do* makes it easier to teach in my opinion.

Really good points here!

After months (and I do mean *months*) of working on Retrieve, Simone and I seem to have turned a corner this week!

She's finally, consistently opening her mouth on the object in a formal context. 🙌 Now we can start working on the grab/hold component.

This skill has long escaped me which is why I'm practicing with Simone! The more times I teach it, the faster I'll get.
