Congratulations to Birdie and Family for completing their Day Training program on Saturday! 🎉

Mom shared that they recently visited a puppy training group workshop and Birdie was the star of the show as the demo dog for muzzle training -- something they've never worked on before!

At 6.5 months old, she's got foundation skills to carry her into adolescence and beyond. Do great, Birdie!

Whee, Paloma! Look what she learned in 11 days!

With daily enrichment like trick training, Live-In Dog Sitting is like a staycation for your dog!

I'm not sure Paloma can get much cuter than this.

Luna is doing so well learning to get on her Place!

This is a unique skill because she has to move away from me to do it. Most everything else we ask is done in our bubble, or involves moving closer to us...not farther away.

This video is a nice example of how specific dogs are. Luna does great hitting her Place if it's between us, but if I vary her angle of approach, it's not as familiar and she needs help figuring it out.

Her little hop to get back on her rug! ☺

Luna gets VERY excited when anyone walks into the kitchen. This would be fine except for the jumping and peeing that accompanies the excitement.

To make this better, we're teaching her to get on her place and stay there when someone walks up to the gate and into the kitchen.

She's learned that the rug is a good place to be ( ), and she's making progress learning to stay there. Today, we worked on staying there with gate sounds and movement. They are part of the excitement picture for her, so they have to be part of our training plan if we want the behavior to work in real life.

Puppy Kacey started her Day Training program this week!

We're going to work on her basic obedience skills with particular attention to leash manners and listening around distractions. She's infatuated with other people and dogs and will be a big girl. Too big to be dragging her owners around!

Chewing is a fun, stress-relieving activity for dogs, and I'm a big fan of "intentionally consumable chews" like this bully stick.

You know what's not stress-relieving or fun?? A choking dog or an internal obstruction.

In addition to selecting an *appropriately* sized chew from the start (I always like to size up, if possible), I never let the dog finish the whole thing.

Once the chew gets small enough that it can fit inside the dog's mouth (like the one in this photo), I trade using a high value treat and throw the tail end away.

A chew "holder" is another WONDERFUL option to avoid choking. This device clamps onto the end of the chew and makes it impossible for the dog to get that last little bit in his mouth.

Luna is a JUMPER. Big time. And it doesn't take much to send her skyward.

Here's one way we worked on keeping four on the floor last week!

7 month old Luna had her first Tutoring session today, and gave us a perfect example of how Day Training accelerates the dog's training.

By working one-on-one with Luna, I was able to quickly implement, evaluate and adjust to find the most successful approach for teaching her Down.

The entire session took about six and a half minutes. Much faster than teaching Luna's Mom to do the same thing.

It doesn't always work quite this smoothly or quickly, but when it does it's a thrill!

Flash and family completed their Day Training program this week! 🥳

Mom reports that he's doing so well overall. He does protest when it comes time to buckle his harness so we spent our last follow-up session introducing a Chin Rest. Ultimately, this will keep him still for dressing and allow him to opt-out of buckling if he needs a break.

While this is a more complex solution, the quick-and-easy trick of keeping him busy eating while dressing no longer works. This tells me he's got some very big feelings about dressing and we need to actually train the issue.

One of the simplest habits I have as a dog trainer, that makes the biggest impact, is rewarding voluntary Downs.

If I see a dog choose to lie Down without being prompted, pushed or bribed, I silently put a treat on the floor by his feet.

Pretty soon, the dog learns that lying Down is a great way to get my attention and treats. This solves a LOT of common behavior problems:
🎉He can't be running out the door and lying Down at the same time
🎉He can't be jumping on your guests and lying Down at the same time
🎉He can't be pawing me and lying Down at the same time
🎉He can't be counter-surfing and lying Down at the same time

to puppy Indy showing off his Down during a socialization Field Trip at Lowe's.

A lot of people want a dog who will chill with them. Rewarding your dog when he takes a step towards chill, can be a simple but powerful part of making that happen.

Welcome to Koinonia!

Koinonia Training and Boarding empowers owners to turn their busy puppies, out of control adolescents, and sweet but struggling adults into well-behaved dogs who choose good behavior.

By teaching both ends of the leash, owners know how to get the behavior they want and dogs know how to listen.
