The weather for our morning walk was almost as pretty as Kal! 😉

Are you getting out to enjoy the coolness before summer has us in its clutches?

If your dog's behavior makes your walks distressing instead of de-stressing, I can help!

Safety is a top (if not THE top) priority for me during Live-In Sitting.

I would rather be over-the-top about your dog's safety, than be careless and have something happen on my watch.

I don't use this safety cord with every single dog, but it does provide an extra layer of safety.

Plan for the worst; assume the best.

I have used a LOT of treats in the last 11 years as a professional dog trainer, and this particular dog food from @ has been my go-to for quite some time now.

My absolute favorite thing about it is that it's the right size for training right out of the bag. No cutting needed!

Look who's back!!

Roscoe was part of my Day Training program last year when he was just a pup.

His Mom asked for more help with his reaction to other dogs during walks recently. This boy was so lovely on our first walk last week!

Needing more training doesn't make you or your dog a failure. It might actually make you normal.

There's a LOT for both ends of the leash to learn, and there's no way you can learn it all in six weeks. Even with the best trainer, best dog, and most astute owner. 😉

to just last week when I was staying with Harley and the smoke alarm started beeping to alert us to a low-battery early one morning.

Harley was VERY uncomfortable about this. In fact, the first thing I noticed (even before the beeping) was that she was hiding in her crate.

After quite the adventure, we finally got the beeping stopped and Harley quit trembling and trying to hide.

Imagine my surprise when she woke up trembling he next morning! And the next morning too!

As best as I can tell, Harley had associated the smoke alarm beeping with **getting up/the morning.**

So even though the beeping had stopped, her fear hadn't because the scary thing was still happening every morning.

This is such a great example of the risks of using fear and aversive-based tools and techniques in training. We may think we're punishing a dog's jumping with a collar correction or stimulation from an e-collar, but the dog may associate that yucky thing with something else entirely! Like the room, the time of day, the person they're jumping on, etc.

Thankfully, Harley's owners report that she is no longer trembling when she wakes up!

I'm so proud of Walter!

One of the things his owners wanted me to work on during Day Training was his habit of Keep Away with stolen items.

Last week was our first attempt at dropping an illegal item, and he did well.

Did he grab it? Yes. But we care less about him grabbing and more about him releasing. Which he did. After a bit.

But you know what's even better? He didn't grab it again. In fact, he volunteered to Leave It for every subsequent repetition.

Stella is where it all started.

Back in 2017, Stella was a training doggy when her owner invited me stay in her home to watch Stella while she went out of town.

At that point, I primarily had dogs come to me -- not the other way around. But I was up for the adventure, and that stay was the inception of Live-In Sitting!

Stella is quite the old lady now, and it's a privilege to still be invited to care for her all these years later. 😊 And now her two feline friends.

Walter started my Day Training program last week, and this video is such a good example of how Day Training jumpstarts a dog's training.

⭐️Day Training (or Board and Train, for that matter) isn't faster because the professional can skip steps.
⭐️Day Training is faster because the professional can move through the steps faster. Including steps like evaluating and troubleshooting.

Check out my thought process while working on Walter's Perch behavior.

This is a fun trick to teach! It's fairly easy, but looks fancy.

It's also a great technique for introducing puppies to a collar and harness in a really positive way. They come to the collar (instead of the other way around) and the collar always predicts goodies.

to Lulu's Socialization Field Trip at .

A happy puppy who feels comfortable enough to pay attention to her handler and do a little training session is what I want to see during .

That doesn't mean I *never* want the puppy to observe and investigate the environment. But I also don't want her doing nothing but that.

When it comes to puppy socialization, I focus on exposure more than interaction.
