I certainly noticed my decline in fitness since I’ve been away. Looking forward to correcting that!

Excitement- Rover’s Victorian Violet wowed us by showing like a veteran! She achieved Best of Winners twice beating adult females and males! AND she achieved a puppy group win! I’m tickled that this 3 generation Rover pup has done so well. Unflappable temperament, beautiful structure and movement. Proud moment here!

Drama- in 2023 I thought Izzy was finished her CKC championship and moved her up. Well I was wrong and we were 2 points shy. Well this year we officially finished Pending CKC confirmation. Izzy showed like a champ and is all I could hope for in a prospective breeding Dam. Temperament, Structure and health shes the entire package. Thank you Barb of Windy Crest for allowing her to come to Canada!

Turn Volume DOWN. I’m training a whistle recall because they will be able to hear it further in the woods should they decide to pursue wildlife while on a walk. We are building with their known command and adding the whistle.

LET’S TALK TOOLS

Red Arrow: Harness that fits around the dog’s body and when connected to a clip leash, creates a pulling reaction from the dog. This pulling reaction triggers the shoulders and chest muscles to be used which then influences the dog to use strength to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk right next to you on a harness, you will not experience the pulling. Congratulations, I have yet to see this. 😂

Orange Arrow: Flat collar, usually used to connect a clip leash to and often times sits on the bottom of the neck due to gravity and the dog’s head being higher than the shoulders. This then triggers the dog’s shoulder muscles and the pulling starts. Again, this teaches the dog that strength needs to be used to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a flat collar, you will not experience the pulling. The majority of dogs I see are pulling during this setup.

Blue Arrow: Slip Leash is very high on the neck where it is placed behind the ears, behind the jaw bone, and it allows us to influence the dog’s head and brain. Shoulders and chest muscles are not triggered and physical strength is not used during the walk. When used correctly, little to no pressure is on the leash and physical strength is used by the dog to get from point A to point B. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a slip leash, you will not experience any pulling.

Out of the 3 tools shown, the slip leash is one of the most productive tools to create a structured walk, a calm mind, and a solid relationship.

Ever watch anyone walk a horse by the saddle?

Yeah, me either.

That’s because when you walk a 1000lb animal, you need to influence the brain and not the body.

Let’s start influencing our dog’s mentally and not physically.

Moving is such a huge undertaking. Still have a few storage units to empty. But this makes it all worthwhile. I walk this tiny “puppy” loop in the forest for the girls to learn how big their DogWatch system is.

There is always time to train the dog.

Too often people believe it is an "all or nothing" approach to training. They are under the false impression that if they don't have 20-30 minutes of concentrated time to devote to training, they may as well not do it at all that day.

If that were the case, my dog would rarely get trained! 😅

Certainly if you have 20 - 30 minutes and can do that once or twice a day, that is FANTASTIC!! but if you don't have that much time available, make the most of the time you do have.

The key is to integrate training into your daily routine rather than making it a line item on your to-do list.

Have the dog wait every time you open the kennel dog so they learn not to charge out. And then have him/her sit every time you put the leash on and as you open the door to head outside together.

Practice a few doggie push-ups (Sit-Down-Sit-Down) while your waiting for the coffee to brew. And then make the pup remain on their place while you prep their breakfast.

Start your walk with a few minutes of heel, then allow the sniffari if you want to, but finish that final block to the house with the heel command again.

Have your dog remain on their Place or hold a Down while you eat dinner. And practice the off/leave it command when you load the dishwasher (unless you appreciate the dog doing the dish scrapping for you!)

You have to take care of the dog, which means there is always time to Train.

Change your thinking, then change the routine and pretty soon you will have changed your dog's behavior for the better.

No more excuses.
