Maverick is a six-year-old, 150-pound Great Dane who has dedicated his life to uplifting American troops and their families through his work with the USO. He brings comfort and solace to our heroes, offering a taste of home and empathetic support. Maverick's remarkable ability to connect with people extends to military children, whom he supports during difficult times such as burial ceremonies and school challenges.

Earning a Hero Dog Award is so much more than just a title. Sometimes, it means walking the halls of Congress to advocate for fellow four-legged heroes.
In June, American Humane hosted Canines on Capitol Hill to educate lawmakers and their staff on two bipartisan bills to protect animals: The Working Dog Health and Welfare Act and The PETSAFE Act. These bills will make great strides in the care of federal working dogs and the well-being of dogs impacted by natural disasters. These courageous canines signaled their endorsement for the two bills, stamping each with a paw print of approval. 🐾

Born without sight or hearing, Raina remained a steadfast companion to her owner, tirelessly working with the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance to raise awareness for dogs with special needs.
Sadly, Raina passed away before the 2023 Hero Dog Awards, but Raina’s spirit has become a beacon of hope for dogs with special needs, inspiring children and fostering compassion. Her journey reminds us that life’s most beautiful moments often come from the most challenging circumstances.

In her five years of life, Moxie has spent four years as a dedicated service dog, providing invaluable assistance to her owner, who suffers from an immobilizing syndrome. In one remarkable instance of Moxie’s dedication, she retrieved a phone for her owner, allowing them to call for an ambulance. She even fetched shoes and opened the door for paramedics, showcasing her exceptional life-saving support.
Moxie symbolizes courage and determination, inspiring her owner to provide service dogs to those in need and raise awareness about their importance. Moxie faithfully accompanies her owner in all activities, from coaching tennis to physical therapy sessions and running errands. Her unwavering loyalty and support make her a true hero.

Meet Buda, our Military Finalist from the 2023 Hero Dog Awards! 🐾
In 2021, K9 Buda embarked on an incredible journey, completing the Explosive Detection Canine Course at Lackland Air Force Base. He joined the Maritime Security Response Team West of the U.S. Coast Guard, becoming one of only eighteen certified explosive detection canines in the Coast Guard.
K9 Buda's achievements are *pawe*-inspiring.He has participated in over 185 operational deployments and engagements, as well as events like Super Bowl LVI and the World Athletic Championships. Buda also volunteered at local San Diego schools, participating in job fairs and educational engagements while imparting invaluable knowledge and leaving a lasting impact.

Our 2022 Hero Dog Kinley was matched with Chloe, a young woman who developed PTSD and anxiety after being sexually assaulted.
This devastating incident left Chloe at her lowest, desperate for help. Kinley sprung into action, helping Chloe rediscover her identity after trauma and hardship.
Kinley and other service dogs are nothing short of miraculous for people with PTS.

As we approach the 2023 Hero Dog Awards this Friday, it's the perfect time to reflect on one of our 2022 finalist's extraordinary journey, a remarkable search and rescue dog named Keb. From her spirited puppy days to her illustrious career, she's been a powerhouse of energy and courage. Having been on over 100 missions, including the challenging OSO Landslide, high snowfields of Mount Rainier, and even solving decades-old crimes, Keb's dedication has taken her far and wide. The 2023 Hero Dog Awards are quickly approaching! As we anxiously await to hear this year's winner, let's highlight last year's finalist in the "Service, Guide and Hearing" category, Recon! Recon's owner and companion, Bobby, sustained many injuries from his years as a Bomb Squad technician, one of which was a traumatic brain injury. His physical pain and mental trauma made day-to-day activities extremely difficult; and it was demoralizing. That is until Recon came along. Not only has Recon given Bobby his mobility and stability back, but also his sense of purpose. Those who thought the old Bobby was gone began to recognize the friend they once knew. #HeroDogAwards
#ThrowbackThursday to last year's Hero Dog Awards winner, Ethan! Ethan, found cold and alone in a parking lot, had an unbreakable determination and will to live. Overcoming insurmountable odds, Ethan is now thriving with owner Jeff who bonded with Ethan the moment he met and rescued him. Now, says Jeff, "he rescues me every single day." Ethan's story and perseverance are an inspiration to so many, and we are lucky to call him our 2022 Hero Dog Awards Winner!

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Sgt. Fieldy, our 2018 Military Hero Dog award winner. Fieldy lived out his last few years with a loving family, and we celebrate every part of his amazing life!
Today we mourn the loss of Surf Dog Ricochet, a true hero. Ricochet did more than just surf, she was a champion for people with disabilities and an inspiration to us all. She won our hearts and the Hero Dog Award in the “Emerging Hero” category in 2011. From her early days on the surf circuit to her incredible work helping others, Ricochet embodied the best of what it means to be a service dog. Rest in peace, Ricochet.
