On multiple occasions, I've tried to explain to others why we shouldn't approach or pet anyone's dog without asking. Ideally, a "no" should suffice. But so many humans feel entitled to a dog's space and attention or are so confident that their "friendly" off-leash dog could never pose a problem. It creates a difficult situation for my clients who struggle to set boundaries with strangers (and oftentimes neighbors, too).

I've encountered so many owners who somehow feel guilty or "rude" when they ask humans to not approach or when setting other reasonable boundaries. Analogies like those in this article I've found helpful to give owners more confidence in standing up for their dog in a way that will ultimately ensure their dog's safety as well as protect their sanity and the progress we've made training.

Consent is a right of every living being. We expect to be asked prior to being touched. We give consent to strangers to touch our dogs without asking the dog.

Hi y'all! Guess what?

I'm going to begin offering hiking excursions for your pup! I'm talking real, non-paved, trails with lots of great smells and sights for your dog.

All bookings will be for 2 or more hours of active hiking, starting at $35/hour plus additional travel fees depending on distance to your closest hiking trail. Travel fees can be waived if we meet at the trail!

I'll bring a bowl with me to provide water and as usual I'll carry plenty of treats (and limited ingredient treats for those with sensitive tummies!) and can give your pup any snacks you provide me with.

I've noticed a concerning trend in Atlanta. I've now had two clients who have dogs with serious behavioral issues tell me they've received a "behavioral assessment" from a doggy daycare where the "behaviorists" observed the dog for the day and performed a write-up based on what they saw. At best, these assessments are a cash grab which have minimised the issues at hand and the dog's behavior will stay the same. At worst, they are a cash grab which have set the dog (and owner) up for failure and potentially put the dog and any dog or person around them in danger.

If you have a dog with more serious behavioural issues (e.g. fear aggression, territoriality, anxiety--anything beyond basic obedience), I can't imagine any situation where you could get an accurate picture from a report coming out of a doggie daycare.

Treating these kinds of issues usually requires the observation of the dog in various settings--with the owner, without the owner, in the home, on walks, etc. and a lengthy intake where you answer a barrage of detailed questions. Please don't waste your money or your time on these "behavior assessments".

Even if you don't go with me, find someone qualified who will take the time to truly evaluate your dog.

This is your periodic reminder that muzzles have a lot of unnecessary taboo!

Why not be *extra safe*? Plenty of dogs LOVE their muzzles because they usually come with treats or a walk. Remember to get your dog a properly fitted muzzle, though!
