Not only is it likely too high in most petfoods, it is out of balance with zinc and iron. While mineral interactions such as calcium and phosphorus are definitely given attention, the ratio of these 3 to each other is rarely addressed. Liver related issues, digestive issues and soft tissue injuries may all be linked to these 3 minerals being out of balance. Therefore, a properly BALANCED diet is critical to long term health.

Excess copper in commercial dog foods can lead to liver problems. Experts at the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine talk about what signs to look for and how to advocate for stronger food regulations.

There's a new kid here in the house. We welcomed a new Aussie boy ("Tate") 10 days ago. I get asked frequently about puppies and raw diets.

Tate is 9 weeks and I started this weekend introducing some raw meat. Here is how our days progressed.

Day 1-5 he was only on the diet his breeder used (kibble/yogurt). Once I knew he was adjusting well and had GREAT stools the first days, I started to add a mix of cooked meat (I do vary my meats) and Honest Kitchen's Base Mix (I really like this product because it's so finely ground and easy to digest and with the added meat is complete). I worked him up to about 1/2 kibble and 1/2 this new mix.

Over this weekend I split the meat portion of the mix as 1:1 cooked to raw meat. As long as this goes well (consistent stools and great intake), I'll switch to only raw meat in that mix in 3-5 days, I'll leave him on 1/2 kibble and 1/2 this mix until he's been through all his worming (we don't want added stress on the gut if there are internal parasites and we need to assume puppies have internal parasites).

After that, I'll take a week or so to transition him to my puppy raw diet completely (again, as long as stools are consistent and intake is good, I can continue with the transition). The things I see people do wrong is transitioning to raw too fast for a puppy's rapidly developing gut, not having a balanced diet for puppies and not getting puppies through proper parasite treatment before flooding the gut with microbes from the raw diet. These wrong moves will set you up for a trip to the vet and a lecture about the problems with raw. Puppies can absolutely be transitioned to a complete and properly formulated raw diet very easy but it cannot and should not be done overnight.
