Dear ones, I've been thinking about those of you affected by the hurricanes. My heart goes out to you.

For those of you who have dysregulated nervous system from the fear and turmoil you have been through (and also those of you who are experiencing stress and fear from family and friends being in the path of the hurricane and even those of you stressed out by from reading or watching the news about it), there are some simple things you can do right now to begin to create some calm in your precious body, mind and spirit.

(Some people think meditation will help when they feel afraid or stressed but personally I've found that meditation doesn't work unless I first calm my body, mind and spirit down a bit before I meditate.)

Here are 3 things I do when my nervous system is jacked up and dysregulated. Maybe they will help you calm your nervous system too:

1. Deep Breathing. (4 seconds inhale, 4 seconds gently hold, 4 seconds exhale).
One of the first things to go when we're feeling very stressed is our breath becomes shallow. Shallow breathing creates even more anxiety because our body reacts to the fact that we may be dying since not enough breath is coming in. I recommend deep breathing as your go-to Step #1 when you're feeling stressed or scared. Deep breathing has far-reaching impact. It's the trifecta for fear and stress! It calms the mind and spirit as well as the body.

2. Sighing.
Sighing can help release tension in the body, especially when you make a noise when you exhale.

3. The Butterfly Hug.
The Butterfly Hug method was developed by Lucina Artigas during her work with the survivors of Hurricane Pauline in Acapulco, Mexico, 1998.

Here's how to do the Butterfly Hug (you can check out You Tube and I've also included a picture of someone doing it in the comments):

Cross your arms over your chest, so that the tip of the middle finger from each hand is placed below the clavicle or the collarbone and the other fingers and hands cover the area that is located under the connection between the collarbone and the shoulder and the collarbone and sternum or breastbone.

Hands and fingers should as vertical as possible so that the fingers point toward the neck and not toward the arms.

Your eyes can be closed, or partially closed, looking toward the tip of your nose.

Next, alternate the movement of your hands, like the flapping wings of a butterfly.

Let your hands move freely. You can breathe slowly and deeply (abdominal breathing), while you observe what is going through your mind and body such as thoughts, images, sounds, odors, feelings, and physical sensation without changing, pushing your thoughts away, or judging.

If you're a pet business owner and you're on my email list, you just received an important email from me. (Ohh, check your inbox now!)

I rarely send emails out on a (gasp, clutch my pearls!) Monday. ;-)

Why not? Because... Mondays are often a day that a lot of people (maybe you?) may already be feeling overwhelmed, burned out, anxious or direction-less.

(And often because there's a whole week ahead of pet visits, walks, dog training or pet grooming. And Easter is coming too, hello!)

So... I don't want to add to any of those possible not-great Monday feelings by sending you an email to read on top of whatever you may be dealing with today.

And I don't often send Monday because, like you are probably skilled at too, I'm conscious of reading the room! Hehe.

But seriously, today I smashed the "no emails on Monday" mold and sent one out because:

- I'm back in action after my retreat and feeling so invigorated and I'd love to bring my refreshed self to your questions, challenges or pet business issues.

I know some of you have been struggling with challenges like:

-how to start your pet business or get more clients if you've already started

-how to hire staff (or how to hire better staff than the ones you currently have)

- how to truly let go of burnout and fall in love with your business again

I also know that some of you could really use a financial leg up in order to get some private coaching time with me so...

I felt inspired today to offer something special for pet business owners, something I rarely offer and even more rarely on a Monday: discounts on my coaching sessions.
