Please read, sign and share this petition. Things at Chicago’s Animal Care and Control are disturbing and many people are working to try to make the problems public, so that more residents (and VOTERS) will demand better management, and a more compassionate approach to animal welfare in the city.
A selection from the petition itself:
Dog “euthanasia” numbers at Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC ) have skyrocketed from 20% to 40% since January, 2023, and continue to rise at an alarming rate on a daily basis.…
The total number of dogs killed in 2022 was approximately 1,860 FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. In contrast, the number killed already this year, OVER A PERIOD OF SEVEN MONTHS, from January through mid August, 2023, is close to 1,400. In April and May alone, it was 40-50 per week, as many as 20 at a time. Chicago’s live outcome rate is a shameful 73%, which means that 1 out of every 4 dogs that enters the pound is killed. Many of these were young, healthy adoptable dogs killed for space. We reject the term “euthanasia,” and call destroying healthy lives what it is: killing.
The time to speak out is NOW before deaths keep climbing and as Chicago has a newly-elected Mayor and new members of the City Council who took office in May.
Present Leadership and Management of CACC are barely running an underfunctioning pound and are unqualified to make evaluations and assessments of the dogs suffering under their care. They need to be REMOVED and REPLACED by qualified professionals who respect the life of sentient beings, are knowledgeable in dog behavior and are specifically trained in how to run a shelter.
The new Mayor, Brandon Johnson, needs to become aware of the embarrassment that this facility has become to its citizens and in the eyes of the rest of our nation. If he wants to turn an archaic dog pound, unchanged since it was opened decades ago, and transform it into a model for the country, he must name new Leadership to lead the facility. A new Executive Director should come from outside the city or county government. The Mayor should conduct a national search for someone experienced in shelter care who will commit to turning the pound into a No Kill Shelter.
