Update: Riff Raff is home after receiving a fluid bag and an anti-nausea medication. His blood sugar was normal, so weâve ruled out full-blown diabetes. Theyâve prescribed another variety of food, which weâre going to try and feed him later. The doctor was under no illusions, and neither are we. This is pretty much the final attempt to reverse his lack of appetite and energy. Depending on his response to this treatment overnight and into tomorrow, we will highly likely know the next course of action. His labs from now 19 days ago were not reporting anything significant, outside of an infection which they did prescribe antibiotics for, and due to his sugar levels at that time, the need to put him on a pre-diabetic diet. We may have another blood draw done, but really only if Riff Raff gives us the indication that we should do so. Tonightâs treatment will likely tell us that information.

Sad newsâŠ. Riff Raff Parsonsâs ultrasound came back. In short, the imaging is consistent with cancer across multiple organs. We have to wait until 2 today to setup a time where they can run a quick glucose test to make sure that what is causing his severe weight loss and food avoidance isnât diabetes, which he was recently diagnosed as being in the pre stages of. In short, if it is diabetes, we can try and give him a chance to physically rebound and potentially, when he gets energy levels back, look at verifying via less invasive means as to whether it is confirmed cancer of a malignant variety, or something else. If it isnât diabetes, then the likelihood of it being malignant shoots to a point of near certainty. If a level of rebound is possible for him, without pain, we will pursue that. If it isnât something that can be reversed, we will do what is right based on the doctors input.
Riff Raff is our best friend. He was my sole everyday companion during Debâs year and a half in the sandbox. He troopered through multiple moves, a long evacuation to and from, finally settling down in our permanent home here in San Antonio. He made every place we lived or stayed feel like home. He weathered it all with love and dignity, and I call him Sir Riff Raff because of that (plus his general tuxedo look TBH). He came to us as a rescue. Weâve said since he arrived that we werenât sure who rescued who. We had lost both of our previous fur kids a few months before he came into our lives. He mended our hearts, and then some. Iâm thankful for the life he was granted when we saw him and fell in love at first sight that day at the Brandon PetSmart. Iâm grateful to have had the opportunity to call him a family member since. Iâm heartbroken that cancer, yet again, rears itâs ugly name and likely takes another family member well before their time.
Iâm posting this mostly for myself and Deb, so we can look back in a few years and reflect fondly on the lucky years that we had with him. We love you, Sir.
