Reading Time: 4 minutes Share onDo you jump at unexpected loud noises? It’s adaptive for humans and other animals to startle at sudden loud sounds. Tomorrow will be nearly 100 degrees in the Portland area and we want your furry friends to be safe!

🌲 It would be best to avoid all outdoor exercise for your pooch in extreme heat and keep them indoors with air conditioning as much as possible. Make sure your pets water bowls are full & readily available at all times. Even in the early hours, limit outside time and reschedule that morning hike or run with your pup if you can.

☀️ Excessive panting can be the first symptom of heat stroke in dogs. A dangerously overheated dog may collapse or have convulsions, exhibit vomiting or diarrhea, and have gums or a tongue that turn blue or bright red. Other warning signs of heat stroke include glazed eyes, excessive drooling, a rapid heart rate, dizziness or lack of coordination, fever, lethargy, and loss of consciousness.

🏥 If your dog shows any of these symptoms, or even if you are slightly unsure, please contact your regular veterinarian or local veterinary emergency hospital ASAP.

🚗🚫 As always, do NOT leave your dog in a car for any amount of time in the heat. Not even for brief amounts of time. Temperatures in a car climb like an oven and can become dangerous and life threatening in a matter of minutes.

🚶‍♂️🐶 Be careful of hot asphalt during walks that can burn your dog's pads. Stick to the grass and keep potty trips short.

Feel free to share! Stay safe and cool everyone! 😎☀️🐾

Many parts of Oregon will see temperatures at or around 100 this week. A reminder to leave pets at home when running errands, provide them with fresh water, and avoid walking dogs on hot pavement/asphalt. If it's too hot for your bare feet, it's too hot for their paws!

A community member recently shared with us that they are asking their Facebook friends to donate to the animals at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter instead of buying fireworks this year. We love this idea!

If you’d like to do the same, we welcome financial donations at: https://www.co.washington.or.us/HHS/AnimalServices/Donations/donate.cfm

Or you can send goodies directly to the animals via our Amazon Wish List:
https://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/3O962O1PIYLWZ/

We are unable to accept in-person physical donations at the shelter at this time.

Thank you in advance for your kindness and for thinking of the animals this holiday weekend.

The English Bulldog has a very tiny nasal cavity in comparison to the German Shepard. The text says, "Proportion of nasal cavity devoted to temperature regulation. High temperatures forecast to be in the 100-105 degree range Saturday through Monday for the lowland. Even the Cascades will be quite warm. The high temperature at Government Camp will be in the low 90s.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture has confirmed rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2) in a feral domestic rabbit found dead in Milwaukie, a suburb of Portland. The tested animal was one of eight rabbits found dead. RHDV2 is a viral disease that causes sudden death in rabbits.

The virus is highly contagious among rabbit populations and can spread through contact with infected rabbits, meat, fur or materials coming into contact with them. RHDV2 poses no human health risk.

To prevent the virus from spreading further into the domestic rabbit population, the state will be collecting and testing feral rabbits in the vicinity where the eight deceased rabbits were found.

ODA and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife are asking the public to report rabbit mortalities to track the virus's presence and movement. Please call 1-800-347-7028 or visit https://oda.direct/RHD to report domestic or wild rabbits which are suspected to have died from RHDV2.

How can I prevent the spread of RHDV2?

* Wash and disinfect hands, clothing, gloves, footwear, cages, and equipment between rabbits from different sources.

* Quarantine new rabbits away from existing ones for 30 days.

* Keep pet rabbits inside to avoid exposure to environments potentially contaminated by wild/feral rabbits or by people, vehicles or implements that can spread the disease.

* Immediately contact ODA (800-347-7028) if you suspect RHD or have sick or freshly dead rabbits.

* If you have animals not freshly dead, double plastic bag them and dispose of in a landfill.
