This nasty wind keeping you from getting a walk in? Freeze the food! Soak kibble in broth or water, add a few veggies or fruit, put in a Kong or slow bowl and give your dog a job. Lindy eats a raw mince, and we’re 20 minutes into dinner and are still chipping away!

Amadeo tried pharmaceutical intervention for the first time and we saw major improvement. Total win in the cutting stress department, which allowed him to maintain composure and think about what we asked of him.

Weird flex but convertible baby gates for the win my friends. Knee replacements, heart attacks, bringing home a new baby … management, management, management! In this case, mama can get up from her chair, wander the house, and sit back down without being stood on by 3 dogs who “just want to help!” (Same chair in both pictures.) She can have her dog in her lap without said dog bouncing onto her knee first. The dogs can feel “helpful” without jostling any hurts, or smothering someone who can’t remove them easily. Set yourself and your dog up for success, and call the professionals if you just need some good ideas!

We cannot “Like” this enough! 💯!!!

As adopters of retired racing greyhounds, we have all heard it from someone or another. "Oh, his/her trainer was a man and they don't like men", or "They don't like people wearing baseball hats" or or and or. The list goes on and on - far longer than the reality of what the dog is actually processing which could be something they haven't been exposed to before. But - does that adopter do anything to HELP and support their "rescue" through whatever the dog is having a challenge with? Nope. Because then that takes away their "hero" badge.

As always, Sean O'Shea nails it.

"Dogs are afraid of many things. The fact that they’re afraid doesn’t mean anything negative has transpired, it simply means they’re… afraid. This typically comes from weak genetics, and/or lack of familiarity/exposure.

We humans love (and need) a good story. We see a dog’s reactions to things and construct a narrative which makes us feel like saviors/heroes, or grants us attention, or just resolves the tension which arises from an unexplainable/unpleasant reaction… even if this narrative negatively impacts the dogs or owners.

Think about who dogs predominantly interact with in shelters, rescues, foster care. It’s rarely men. Along with that, men tend to also have more assertive characteristics (deeper voice, larger physique, less fluid movements, and a more assertive presentation in general). If a dog is unfamiliar with men, and/or has weak nerves, it’s fairly easy to understand why they react to men in the negative fashion they often do.

Instead of burdening a dog with the abuse story, and saddling them with all the guilt, permissiveness, and coddling it engenders, how about we create a hero story where we work our dogs through their challenges (however they present) and treat them like creatures who are resilient, capable, and eager to transform—and then watch them grow and flourish through sharing strength, rather than unhelpful weakness?

Of course that means prioritizing the dog’s needs over your own, but that’s no issue for someone who professes to truly love dogs… right? Right?"

Shock collars.

The receiver is almost the same size as this dog's head. How do you think this little dog feels lugging that thing around on walks, and that's even before any electricity is put through it for "bad" behaviour.

I've seen several posts recently where tiny dogs like this are wearing a shock collar and/or a prong collar. I wonder what is the mindset of people putting these things on tiny dogs. It's illustrative of zero skill and knowledge of training and behaviour.

If a trainer puts a shock collar on a dog under 6 kilos I question their knowledge and ethics. I’ll go a step further. If they put a shock collar or prong collar on a dog over 6 kg, I question their ethics and knowledge, too.

It's 2023. We no longer lobotomise people with mental health problems. We shouldn't be looking to Descarte for guidance on how animals feel pain.

I have no interest in debating training methods and will delete comments which endorse, justify or promote the use of outdated, aversive training.

Love and peace.

Training Tip Tuesday: Consider how you will prevent escape on Halloween. Need a gate or X pen? Start shopping NOW! Don’t wait until a few days before, or you may realize you can’t get one in time without paying exorbitant overnight shipping fees! You can place your dog in another room behind a closed door, put up a gate that doesn’t allow your dog in the room with your front door, or purchase an X pen that you can sit around the door, which allows you to open the pen door, step through, then close the pen door before you open your front door. Keep your dog and your trick-or-treaters safe!

Recently in one of my dog groups, there was a conversation about dogs who aren’t safe around children and how they probably shouldn’t be allowed to survive if they have that attitude because “management will certainly fail.” We’re 5 months into living around a toddler who visits a couple times a month. Déo is not impressed. He was incredibly nervous and very much not safe around her in the beginning. She just wants to love him so much! We separated them constantly. With a LOT of management and some time, this is their today. We still manage, and he puts himself outside when he gets too stressed (smart dogs for the win). And sure, she’s not here 24/7, but dogs are allowed to have opinions and personalities. Our job as the logical end of the leash is to create spaces that are safe for everyone. Not blame a dog for being a dog.

Amadeo had an eye injury over the fall, so this winter we are working on conditioning him to protective eyewear! Just like muzzle training, you can’t slap them on and go. It’s important to take the time to get him comfortable and acclimated so he doesn’t hurt himself further.

Our Story

Just like MaGic is a full service in home training company owned and run by Jessica. With fifteen years experience doing rescue, training dogs and horses, and generally enjoying animals, Jessica has spent her adult life immersed in the world of canines. Raised with dogs, horses, rabbits, and cats in a large family in rural MI, Jessica is no stranger to animal nature. It was truly a calling.

Jessica specializes in fear and reactive dogs, helping them gain a new lease one life, one that doesn’t involve being afraid of all the things, or barking at every noise. Family basic obedience, common manners, and preventing dog aggression are other common reasons she is hired. In your home, or at her board and train facility, your dog will excel and learn how to be a happy, healthy, well behaved animal the whole family can enjoy.

Jessica currently owns one dog (Francesca, pictured), co-owns Just like Home, (www.facebook.com/justlikehome.love) a cage free boarding facility for dogs in Putnam County, and helps run People United 4 Pets Rescue (www.facebook.com/4pupsrescue). While busy in the dog world, Jessica enjoys rollerblading, kayaking, biking, hiking and horses - almost of which Francesca tags along for. Call today to learn more!
