A lot of people ask us for tips on introducing dogs. While it's not an exact science and every animal is different, we would like to share our method and tips we've picked up over the years. We hope to help people have successful introductions whether you foster, adopt or pick a stray off the streets..
Location: Do not introduce inside your home. Your resident dog may be protective of their space, toys , bed or even the food smells in your home. We introduce our fosters in our backyard. All toys and bones are inside and out of sight. If you have neighbors with barking dogs it may be best to pick another space. You can book a private park on Sniff Spot. You want a large open relaxing space.
Check yourself: Are you calm? Are you afraid? Are you stressed ? If you are not relaxed your dog(s)may sense it. Some dogs don't react to your mindset but many do so take a few deep breaths and relax.
Meet the Parents: If your new dog is meeting people or kids for the first time take the dog on a leash and walk them around the yard. A few laps in a circle is fine just so they can learn the space, potty, hydrate and best of all understand that you control the leash therefore you are in charge. For multiple people, take turns with the leash until everyone has been introduced.
Dog meet Dog world: We usually have a whole pack to introduce. Keep your new dog on the leash since you don't know how they will react. We start with our most docile dog ( Lucky) off leash , who also happens to be our alpha. Lucky usually gives one or two sniffs and then walks away. If he's relaxed everyone else will follow his lead. Then one by one we let the other dogs out to meet the newcomers. This is best done with a second person to release each dog. Read your dog behavior. If we have other new dogs we don't trust yet or that have confidence or bully issues, they are also leashed at introduction. Never let two dogs meet for the first time face to face, you want lots of butt sniffing. It's normal t
We've already been in line over 2.5 hours for free Vaccines and to sign up for a free Nueter for 2 cases we can't afford to take into our rescue. Our rescue is completely out of funds so this is the only way we can think to help these dogs thanks to the City of Alvin. We really need donations for Urgent medical care. Please please please consider donating some Easter love to our rescue at www.luckydogfosters.com
