Making an end-of-life choice for your pet is a difficult decision. At Blue Skies Pet we understand how you feel, because we've experienced the loss of our own companion animals. The emotional conflict you feel is a sure sign that your beloved friend will not be forgotten. We're here to honor your relationship with your pet and help to guide you through your difficult decision with compassionate su

pport. We'll help you feel confident that you're making the right choice at the right time. Although it is never an easy decision, animal euthanasia is a caring option to ease the suffering of a cherished family member, burdened by a debilitating condition. Blue Skies Pet will come to you in your time of need so you may say goodbye to your animal companion in the privacy of your own home. Our friendly staff veterinarians have over 35 years of experience and the knowledge to assure that your pet will be allowed to pass with dignity and peacefully in the loving presence of family and the comfort of familiar surroundings. Our personalized services include quality-of-life assessment, compassionate sedation with euthanasia, and handling of all cremation services according to your individual needs and wishes. Hospice care for pets is intended to provide pain-relieving and comfort-giving care for animal companions near the end of their lives. Pet hospice can provide the time needed for owners to come to terms with their pets' illnesses and decide their comfort level with optional treatment. Hospice care also allows time needed to reach good decisions as well as help owners begin the grieving process. Part of hospice care is accepting death as a part of life. It provides the time to make informed plans and reasoned decisions, and to begin to say goodbye. We can set up return hospice visits as needed to manage your pet's remaining days with you.

As we begin our celebration of women in veterinary history, let’s start at the beginning. Meet Dr. Florence Kimball, who along with Drs. Elinor McGrath and Mignon Nicholson were the first female veterinarians in the United States at the turn of the 20th century.

Today, we remember and honor historic veterinary trailblazer Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson. Born in the same neighborhood as his namesake, Frederick Douglass, Dr. Patterson was orphaned at age two and raised by his sister in Texas. His sister valued education and sent him to school, costing eight dollars of her 20 dollars a month salary. Dr. Patterson went on to earn his DVM from Iowa State University in 1923 and become the founding dean of Tuskegee University, College of Veterinary Medicine - among many other notable achievements.

This week, AVMA Chief DEI Officer Dr. Latonia Craig will be delivering the keynote address at the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association Winter Conference in honor of Dr. Douglass Patterson and will be sharing some of the characteristics modeled by Dr. Patterson’s remarkable purpose-driven life that we can all learn from and practice daily.
