Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

🌑 Waiting for the Eclipse... 🌞

During solar eclipses, domesticated animals like dogs and horses, as well as exotic zoo animals such as baboons and flamingos, tend to become silent and still. They may cluster together and remain vigilant. Horses, being sensitive creatures, can also exhibit restlessness, shaking their heads and tails. Some may even stop moving or display extreme behaviors. In summary, while horses may not fully comprehend the cosmic event, their reactions during a solar eclipse can range from restlessness to stillness.

Pharlap❤️

…. On the morning of 6 April, 1932, Australians tuned into their radios to hear the shocking news that national icon Phar Lap had died in mysterious circumstances in the United States.

Born in New Zealand in 1926, the champion thoroughbred came from humble origins.

Bought for just 160 guineas at auction,
Phar Lap was generally regarded as too big and ungainly for racing success.

He was shipped to Australia in 1928 where he was leased by an unknown trainer by the name of Harry Telford.

Despite these disadvantages, Phar Lap surprised the nation by dominating the Australian racing industry.

He played the role of hero to Australians struggling with the effects of the
Great Depression, winning 37 of 51 races he entered, including a Melbourne Cup and two Cox Plates

ON THIS DAY – 5th April...

1932 – Racehorse Phar Lap died midday at a ranch in San Francisco, two weeks after winning at Agua Caliente racetrack. An autopsy revealed that the horse's stomach and intestines were inflamed, leading many to believe the horse had been deliberately poisoned. In 2000, equine specialists studying the two necropsies concluded that Phar Lap probably died of duodenitis-proximal jejunitis, an acute bacterial gastroenteritis.

1987 – It was announced that Newcastle would join the NSWRL in 1988. They were later joined by Brisbane and the Gold Coast to form a 16-team competition.

🛑 SLOW DOWN FOR HORSES 🛑
Are you aware of the Highway code changes. When you see a horse on a road, you should slow down to a maximum of 10 mph. Be patient, do not sound your horn or rev your engine. When safe to do so, pass wide and slow, allowing at least 2 metres of space.

Second Chance Equine Experience

Our vision is to create a safe, happy environment where we can rescue, re-educate and rehabilitate neglected, abused, problem or unwanted horses. We use unique methods of re- building trust that has often been broken, by cruelty, neglect or trauma.

Our aim is to give people in the community an opportunity to connect with horses and learn about their behaviour and how to read them. Our rescue horses are our family, they all have different personalities so we give people the chance to get to know them on the ground before riding them. This builds a strong foundation of confidence, trust, and respect. It helps form bond and friendship between horse and rider.

THINKING OF BUYING YOUR FIRST HORSE? We have a great program for anyone wanting to learn everything there is to know about owning and caring for a horse. You will learn about feeding and nutrition, rugging, saddles and gear, including how to maintain it properly. Vet care, would dressing, accidents and emergency procedures. You will learn how to tell if a horse is lame and how to deal with it. What the signs of colic are, how it is caused and the steps you must follow if your horse is suffering from it. Dental health, Hoof care and maintenance, How to worm a horse, and how often to rotate wormers. We have a float for learning how to back up and hitch, if needed, and we demonstrate and practice how to load a horse safely. Once you are ready to buy your first horse, we can help. We help with finding the right horse for you. We help with pre-purchase heath checks, paddock maintenance and fencing advice. We will also help with re-education if needed, and starting young or green horses.

WANT TO GET BACK INTO RIDING AFTER A LONG BREAK? OR HAVE A HORSE MAD CHILD THAT IS BEGGING YOU FOR LESSONS? We give riding lessons for both children and adults. Private or group lessons available. Prices start from $65.00 for lessons, but will be discounted with regular attendance and bulk purchase. * Ask us about our family friendly price for 3 or more children.
