Horse owners - we're inviting you to an evening discussion at Leahurst, about your experience managing parasites (worms). You'll have refreshments and an optional free tour of the equine hospital included.

This is part of a research project about worm management in horses, and any owner can take part whether you have 1 horse or many! There are no right/wrong answers, we just want to hear your opinions and thoughts.

There are two groups - 3rd and 10th August, starting at 7pm with the optional tour just beforehand for those interested. If you want to know more, just drop an email saying "worm study" to Tamzin, on [email protected].

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄...

Salt is one of the only minerals that horses have an indisputable appetite for, and a lack of salt can increase the risk of early muscle fatigue, reduced stamina, muscle cramps, dehydration and slow recovery rates.

Therefore it's recommended that an average horse is given 30g (2 tablespoons per day) of salt, which can be divided between feeds.

15/06/2023

Salt salt salt !!!
I’m not preaching ( well I am really 😂) I’m just reminding you guys 🙏

10gms per 100kg of salt per day is what’s recommended

🛑Check with your vet first especially if your horse has any underlying health issues 🛑

Horses NEED salt all year round.

More so this time of year.
Salt licks are naff ( they’re good as a boredom breaker but that’s about it) horses have smooth tongues so can’t get enough salt unless they bite it, if they’re biting it then you’ve got serious issues going on!!

Offer a salt water bucket alongside there plain water so they can choose freely ( I just throw a handful into a normal size bucket)

OR Add to feed so you definitely know they’re getting it ( I add 3tbs once a day split between 2 chaff only feed )

If they’re sweating then have a look at electrolytes to replace lost minerals ( READ the ingredients!!! So much sugar in alot of them ) aim for the least amount of sugar especially as the grass is super crazy at the moment.

I can’t emphasise enough that horses need to be drinking more.
Horses that are dehydrated are prone to colic!

Helps to Reduce colic which is also rife at the moment ( I’m going to do a video of some gentle exercises to do on your horse to help get things moving, gas or blockage while your waiting for your vet)

Im not a fan of table salt due to the caking agents that are present. But if you can’t find any sea salt then I’d rather use table than nothing. B&M do sea salt at a good price

Keep your horses hydrated 🙌

A post from last year which I thought was worth a re share.
Did you know that if your horse travels an hour in the horse box it’s equivalent to 20 minutes of continuous trot work, whereas 3 hours travelling in the box can attribute to cantering a mile.
This is because the horse isn’t just standing there, however carefully you are driving. As they make constant adjustments to maintain their balance they are actually using isometric muscle contraction this produces muscle tension without a change in limb movement and can cause tired muscles and loss of energy. Worth bearing in mind if you are out and about this Spring/Summer

Riders/Ride Organisers!!!

On Sunday 23rd April there will be a National test of the UK Emergency Alerts Service. Your phone will produce a siren-like noise and a message displayed that it is a test. If you are at a ride or out riding, please be aware as this is likely to be a loud noise and could startle your horse. Read more information here:

This came up on a memory from 9 years ago on my personal page. I would say it is still true though 😊🐴💕

For all the girls with the muckers, half chaps and gloves with a hole in a finger. For the girls who skip a party because they have to get up at 4:30am. The ones who will feed, muck, and repair a fence for the love of their best friend. This is for the girls who can drive a tractor before they can drive a car. For the girls who would rather jump fences than skip rope. This is for the girls who think bailing twine and duct tape are tools. For girls who spend more money having manes and tails plaited than have their own hair done. This is for the girls who are excited opening a box with a leather halter in it. Who shovel snow to get to the barn. For the girls who filled a stocking for a horse. Who wear a bracelet or a belt with their horse's name on it, not a boy. This is for the girls who dreamed of a pony for Christmas. This is for the dreams we hold and the memories we all share. We know how to love unconditionally because a horse has taught us. This is a lifestyle not a hobby. Copy and paste if you agree.

👋 This is a very important memo! 👋 Please make sure you always buckle your blankets and tack into your horse. When they face out they have the risk of getting caught on fences, buckets, and anything else your horse might find.

On average it takes 3600 seconds to shoe someone’s well behaved precious fluffy.

The said fluffy will then go an average of 6 weeks until the next shoeing. That leaves 87,087,600 seconds to do what ever you want to your precious 4 legged fluffy. The following list are somethings that really don’t need to be done for the 3600 seconds a farrier is working on that horse.

- lotions and potions- please don’t cover every square inch of the precious pony in any creams or sprays, hoof treatments are a big no no. Being an adult man covered in a white gloopy substance or smelling like I’ve got a bad case of nappy rash isn’t ideal.

-feeding- haynets or buckets of feed are a huge bug bare for most farriers. Having to squabble with a food obsessed fluffy is hard work and we don’t wish to look like a scarecrow. Feeding for those 3600 seconds isn’t going to give you the instant condition you’ll need for the gymkhana the next day.

-Bathing,clipping,preening- having to deal with a dripping wet soapy pony isn’t ideal, I know a day of shoeing doesn’t leave us smelling that fresh, but we are Capable of cleaning ourselves. As a follicle challenged man I find clipping just before or whilst shoeing insulting and uncomfortably itchy.

-family and friends- horses are a herd animal, turning out all your precious fluffys friends whilst those 3600 of a shoeing appointment, is fairly inconsiderate. Trying to convince a neurotic fluffy that his friends are having a rubbish time and there aren’t any lions waiting to eat him, is a tricky thing.

-advice- your farrier, trimmer or vet has taken decades to acquire some small snippets of half decent knowledge. If we willingly dish some out, it’s usually because we feel it’s helpful to keep you and your beloved fluffy alive and well, until we can see you for our next round of 3600 seconds, A few pieces of gold are as follows…

“Don’t buy an ex race horse, in the rare occasion it doesn’t try killing you on a regular basis, it will attempt to kill itself on an even more regular basis “

“Please stop feeding your fluffy, the shear fact you can’t get a saddle to fit isn’t anyones fault and it’s going to die”

“Please spend some time handling your savage fluffy” , I’m running out of spare body parts and my business card doesn’t state “I do this for fun “

These are just a few things that a farrier wishes the owner would avoid for those 3600 seconds every six weeks.
