I got little baby Raymond on October 14th 2014 and he was a teenie 1.4oz. I know he came from Florida, but I do not know his hatch date. I had wanted a tortoise for the longest time and had just gotten over keeping exotic hermit crabs for a few years and found them all new homes after their care became quite nerve wracking. I had just quit smoking after 10+ years and wanted to “reward” myself and finally get a tortoise.

I read up on many different types of tortoises, I wanted to pick the best one for me. A tortoise that would not get huge, require a ton of space and be friendly and easier to care for. I decided on a redfoot. After deciding on the type of tortoise I read up about their care. I read for months over and over again, seeing what they eat, the type of housing, how to care for hatchlings...I read like crazy, joined tortoise groups and forums and finally decided to find my tortoise.

When I got Ray I was so nervous, this tiny little creature was fragile, scared and total new to me. I did everything to a T as far as care, heat, humidity, feeding, soaking..you name it. He was a full time baby practically! A little after I got him I started this page for me to basically keep a virtual “journal” of his growth, care, and memories. Now he has many dedicated followers that check in from time to time which makes me happy to share his life with others.

After a few months I decided to get another tortoise since redfoots are social. I got Lizzy from Alabama and they were great together up until just recently. We found out Lizzy was a male and he was not thriving well with the others, not eating much, and shying away from being a happy tortoise. So I decided to find Lizzy another home where he could live alone and be spoiled. Now Lizzy has a very great daddy and lives just a few miles away and we are so happy!

After getting Lizzy I decided to get a 3rd tortoise (3’s a crowd..literally) and Josie came along...Josie was much younger then Ray and Liz but fit in well (very fiesty) Ray and Josie seem to hit it off perfect with each other and now they live together as a pair. Both of my tortoises are looking to be both females (Yes Ray might be a girl) But we still call Ray a he because thats how its been for nearly 4 years! (Shhh don’t tell her!) After finding out Lizzy was a male I thought this would be hard on the 2 girls as well down the road and we don’t have room to keep another separate enclosure so I believe everything worked out for the best!

Raymond was named after Raymond Reddington from NBC’s the Blacklist (after Spader's character) It’s one of my favorite shows and it started around the time I got Raymond. Lizzy was named after the lead female character and Josie...well she was a google search for many weeks...I just like the name and it stuck.

I have rescued a few tortoises throughout the years and found them great homes, even added a 4th redfoot to the mix but after thinking about it it was not the best choice. This tortoise was “Tuesday” She was a cherryhead and way to small at the time to live with the biggums. I found her a perfect home and shes been thriving with her new mom.

I decided 2 tortoises are the best, Ray and Josie get along great, eat great, sleep together and so far like each other. Of course this could change in the future but I’m ready for that if it happens. Thanks for following us!
