ACAT officially formed in January 2010 because of a need to help cats and to help humans help cats. While ACAT expends a lot of its resources directly helping felines, we know our mission includes education, outreach and coordination with other rescue groups, both private and government. Countering the cat overpopulation problem and reaching the point that virtually all cats are wanted and loved w

ill take a concerted effort. We invite you to be part of our Team through volunteering, donating or by becoming a member of ACAT. If you believe that every cat and kitten should be loved and cared for; If you believe in responsible pet ownership; If you believe that companion animals deserve our love and respect, you are a candidate for ACAT. ACAT is offering memberships for just $20 a year for households or individuals, or at least $250 a year for businesses. Lifetime household (one address) memberships are $200. Call or email ACAT to learn more. Please join us in our mission. Contact us at 982-2228.

Do you need a couple of mousers for your warehouse or home? Or maybe you'd like a pair of cats who love attention, but are not quite cuddling? Callum is a white and brown cat surrendered to Anchorage Animal Control about two years ago. He was kept in a bathroom for about a year before moving into his current foster home with a local foster-home centered feline rescue group. He is a sweet young man who LOVES to play, chase toys, and eat treats. Loretta is a black cat with a white star on her chest and beautiful amber eyes. She also LOVES to play, chase toys, and eat treats. Both of them are a bit shy when it comes to being picked up, but Loretta often poses for pets and Callum can easily be petted while eating his dehydrated chicken treats. The two have formed a bond in their foster home. They are looking for a fur-ever home, maybe somewhere they can be mousers. Both are short-haired (so need an indoor gig), enjoy play, and enjoy the company of adults. They are quite shy among noisy or boisterous youngsters, but respond well to gentle people. If you are interested in meeting these two lovelies, please contact their foster caregiver, Carol, in Wasilla at Alaska (907) 355-3587.

Can you help a cat in crisis? Every year on this day, we remind people of our Rallye Fund, which helps cats who might otherwise not get the medical care they need when they are in a sudden medical crisis. ACAT has used the Rallye Fund to help dozens of cats in the last 12 years. The fund is named for the first injured kitten we helped saved -- a plucky black and white tuxedo who became known as Rallye. Sadly, last December, 3 months shy of his 14th birthday, we lost our wonderful mascot after a long illness. He was an amazing foster uncle to countless kittens, and an all-around wonderful guy. In honor of Rallye, we invite you to donate to our Rallye Fund on our website so other kittens and cats have a chance at a healthy and happy life because the funds were there to help pay for medical care. Thank you. https://www.alaskacatadoptionteam.org/the-rallye-fund.html

This is not a post I want to write. And some people have asked why bother, won't it just cause bad feelings?
But how do we ever make change happen if we continue to pretend that nothing needs changing?

Remember back in February when Title 24 was suddenly 're-interpreted' (by someone) and everything changed? When we went from the rule that a finder of a homeless animal could keep it as long as they filed a found report in case the owner was looking for it. And then we were told that every found animal had to be taken to the shelter for a mandantory 3-5 day period. And only after that could the finder, or rescue group, pick up the animal. We were assured that the animal would be seen by a vet and cared for just as well, or better, than an individual or rescue group could do and that it was a good thing.
Not to worry.
Well, that is clearly NOT the case and has resulted in the negligence of care and death of a kitten. And we are infuriated!

About 5 days ago, we got a call about a cat by the road that was crying and seemed unable to walk. The Good Sams who saw the kitten and stopped to help said it would get up and spin around and then lay back down and cry and cry. They wanted to help but had nothing to put the kitten in so they called us. One of our volunteers immediately grabbed a cat carrier and headed to the site. She was able to pick the kitten up and get it to her truck. Her plan was to take the kitten directly to Tier One, the only local clinic open at that time of night. This is when we learned that the Good Sams had called a vet before they called us and the vet had called animal control and an animal control officer was on his way. So instead of taking the kitten immediately to a vet who could do xrays and give the cat the care it needed right away, the volunteer stayed in her truck by the road waiting.
When Animal Control did not show up, the volunteer took the cat to the shelter where they took the kitten from her. The volunteer let them know that we would rescue the kitten as soon as they would allow him to be released. He was a little orange boy. The woman at the shelter examined the kitten and said the kitten was just wet. She did say the vet would not be there till Monday but of course we thought they would get the kitten checked out by a vet right away. The next day when I contacted the shelter, I was told they would neuter him and let us know when we could pick up.
Yesterday I got a call from animal control telling me that they took the kitten to be neutered and found that the kitten's pelvis was broken and he had other breaks and injuries and that he was probably feral and that he would never be able to walk and that they were going to euthanize him. I was in shock. Didn't they just say he was fine except for being wet? My rational mind deserted me for the moment. All I could focus on was that the kitten was beyond hope according to the vet; nothing we could do.
It took about 20 minutes for me to be able to think and then call back and ask to take the kitten and get a second opinion at another vet clinic. But it was too late. They had euthanized the kitten.

This is what I want to know...............
How in the everylovin world can you have a kitten in your care for 5 days without knowing that he is so broken that he cannot walk?!
How can the kitten be in such bad shape in your care for 5 days and not have a clue that he was so damaged he was beyond being allowed to live?
How can you really 'care' for a kitten in such a serious condition and not know to give him ANY treatment that could possibly help save his life or get him out of pain!?
They never did xrays. They never gave him pain meds. They decided that death was his only option after letting him set in the cage without real veterinarian evaluation or care for his condition for 5 days!

Before this, I had wondered if this 're-interpretation' of the law might just be a hassle for finders and rescues and not really be dangerous. I will never question that frightening possibility again. Now I know that the danger is real.

So what do we do now? Do we continue to follow the law and put cats in danger by sending them to a place where they are obviously not being given a proper vet check or adequate care? Or do we just take the calls, pick the cats up and seek care from more conscientious vets and fosters? Do we follow the law or do we do the best for the cat? What happened to this little orange boy proves that we cannot reliably do both.

We really care about these cats. And we really really do want to do the best for them. That is what we always have done regardless of cost or effort. It would wear away our soul to do it any other way. To see these precious creatures disregarded the way this little guy was. No one even cared enough to make sure that he could walk?

I wish I could take back those 20 minutes between the time I was told they were going to euthanize him and when my brain kicked in enough to insist that he have another chance. That will be with me for a long time. I can't change that now. But what I can do is to make sure the next cat found does not end up in that same kind of awful and precarious situation.

Follow the law, or do what's right? That's what we have to face when rescuing animals in the borough now. Not just rescues, but all of us.

The Matsu Borough assembly has been told how the shelter operates many times before and how animals die because of it. And they have ignored it. Maybe it's time for them to wake up and do what it takes to make sure that people who care about animals in the borough do not have to make a choice between being caring citizens and law-abiding citizens.

Looking for some feline companionship without the long-term commitment? Consider fostering a teen or adult cat, like Luna. Providing a home for a cat can relieve pressure on our other foster homes, help cover for vacations and allow us to take in more cats in need. We will reimburse for food and litter, and set kitty up with needed supplies. It's a great option for people whose lives are not settled enough to adopt a forever pet. We can match you with a kitty that should fit well into your situation. Interested? You can reach us at 907-982-2228 or fill out our volunteer application at https://www.alaskacatadoptionteam.org/volunteer.html

FOLLOWUP
Last week, a person who adopted a kitten named Nora from us claimed that the kitten had chlamydia, which is a contagious bacterial infection that largely affects the eyes and nose. There was no lab test report or other proof offered that Nora has chlamydia.

ACAT had one of Nora's littermates, who is still in our foster home, tested for chlamydia by our vet's office Feb. 9, with results this week. The $175 test showed no signs of chlamydia nor any issue that warranted treatment.

As we said before, we stand behind our foster caregivers, our medical assistants, and our policies that center on homing healthy and happy felines.

Thank you for your continued support and faith in us.
