BLM wants to remove horses from this herd (and others), preferring that unnecessary action to any sort of restriction on commercial livestock grazing. They want to break up families. We have got to fight! Anyone anywhere in the world can comment! Comment BEFORE AUGUST 12TH on the proposal at this link: https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2022012/570/8003816/comment?fbclid=IwAR2Mzy6G12e68aMd5WD35b_XO_B37WjI_Q1133pAmyU5ryqYdNHIzeIUfao

As storm clouds cover the range, the colorful pintos of the McCullough Peaks herd, make their way across a hilltop. I bet you recognize handsome Thor, with his nemesis, Splaash, right behind him, both with ears pinned. And that's Thor's natal band, led by band stallion, Tahlequah, in a tight grouping behind Splaash. Young Stormrider is leading the charge in the distance, with his mother, Ms. Pac-Man, following close behind.

Many of you are very familiar with the McCullough Peaks wild horses and right now, they need our help. If we don't comment on the Bureau of Land Management's plan to remove up to half of this herd, the horses we've come to know and love will be gone forever. We can help stop this travesty, but we must submit a public comment to the BLM by the deadline of August 12th-less than a week away. If we care about these horses, we have to be their voice. We currently have only 1540 comments, but I know we can do better. We can't sit on the sidelines and allow them to be taken without a fight. If you click on the link, you'll find talking points, as well as, a direct link to the Bureau's comment page. And I just found out you can comment more than once, so get your comments in! Please speak out for these horses before they are gone forever. Thank you ❤

Gonna post this every day through the deadline! This post has talking points in it already, which should be easier to copy on mobile. BLM link is at the bottom!

Please comment and share!

I didn't know that so many of our friends used mobile phones exclusively. Because of that, I thought it would be helpful to post the talking points for the McCullough Peaks roundup and removal here so they can be easily cut/pasted for submission to the Bureau of Land Management. We only have until August 12 to comment on the Bureau's planned roundup and removal of the McCullough Peaks herd, so please submit your comments today. Thank you!

The talking points, along with a link to the Bureau's comment page, are included below.

TALKING POINTS

After reviewing the McCullough Peaks HMA Bait Trap Gather Environmental Assessment (EA), I support the “No Action Alternative” of continued population management with PZP with no horses removed from the range. Reasons for my decision are outlined below.

The Appropriate Management Level (AML) at McCullough Peaks is 70-140 horses, with the current population at 181 horses. The EA outlines gathering and removing excess wild horses through bait trapping to bring the herd numbers down to AML, however, the EA is unclear as to how many horses will be left on the range after the removal. If herd numbers are brought down to AML, the herd won’t be genetically viable. Dr. Gus Cothran, Professor Emeritus at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine, states that at a minimum, herd size must be maintained at 150 horses to ensure genetic viability. This fact is acknowledged in the Bureau's own Wild Horse and B***o Handbook.

With regard to the use of additional population growth suppression treatments, this EA outlines three conflicting plans for use of GonaCon in conjunction with PZP on mares at McCullough Peaks as follows: GonaCon use on mares older than 13 years that have contributed to the genetic diversity of the herd; GonaCon used on mares that have contributed to the genetic diversity of the herd (no age stipulation), and Gonacon used on PZP non-responders only.

If GonaCon is used on all mares that have contributed to the herd’s genetic diversity, they will be moving the herd one step closer to obsolescence. Given concerns about the potential for permanent sterilization and injection site abscesses, GonaCon should never be considered as a fertility treatment for any mares at McCullough Peaks. PZP has been used successfully since 2011 and should continue to be used for population management.

The EA states that the BLM must manage the rangelands to prevent the range from deterioration associated with an overpopulation of wild horses. The BLM has provided no data indicating the rangeland is deteriorating and without these data, there is no rationale for the proposed gather. In addition, there is no analysis provided for the impact of livestock grazing on the rangeland. An evaluation of the impact of livestock grazing is required to determine rangeland health before any wild horses are permanently removed from McCullough Peaks.

The EA states that the older population of horses (20 years of age and above) living within the McCullough Peaks HMA will not be removed. The EA also states that any animals affected by a chronic disease, injury, lameness or serious physical defect, such as severe tooth loss or wear could be humanely euthanized. Horses are categorized as “seniors” beginning at 15 years of age, and at that time they begin to experience tooth loss/wear and would be more likely to present with lameness or injury. If horses in this age range are trapped, we can infer that those with age-related issues may be euthanized. Older horses make up 1/3 of the population and, it is feared that a high percentage of these horses will be killed, thus negating the BLM’s proposed action that older horses remain on the range. Issues that are indicators of a horse’s senior status, should not be considered as criteria for euthanasia for any of the McCullough Peaks herd.

Of the 181 horses at McCullough Peaks, 59 are greater than 15 years of age with 22 of them over the age of 20. Of the 22 horses over 20 years of age, 5 of them are more than 24 years old. The horses over 24 years of age are in ill health and will probably not survive another winter.

Eleven horses were lost during the winter of 2022/2023, with 9 of these horses over 15 years of age. In assessing the condition of the remaining older horses, it is possible that the McCullough Peaks herd could lose 15-20 older horses this winter. When the current rate of attrition is coupled with the 2% average yearly growth rate, the population of adult horses at McCullough Peaks may well fall within AML over the next few years, thus negating the need for a bait trap removal.

The proposed bait trapping would start during fall 2023 and could continue through February/March 2024. As per the EA, the BLM will check bait traps at a minimum of once every 10 hours, with horses in traps provided a continuous supply of fresh water and hay. As necessary, roads to the traps will be plowed to allow access. Because of the extreme winter weather at McCullough Peaks HMA, roads can be inaccessible for days or weeks at a time. Plowing is often not possible. If horses are stuck in traps during a winter storm without food, water or shelter, they could perish. Because of this, all bait trapping operations should cease, with traps closed, during the onset of winter weather.

It is imperative that only trained BLM personnel, familiar with the McCullough Peaks herd, conduct bait trapping operations, without the involvement of contractors.

Today, I wanted to share another photo of the meet and greet between the yearling buckskin c**t, Brumby, and the elder stallions, Hickory (18 years) and Chaco (19 years). Hickory and Chaco normally keep to themselves, but this weekend, they decided it was time to mingle and young Brumby was the first to greet them. Here, Brumby is snuggling with the stallion, Hickory. Both Hickory and Chaco were very gentle with Brumby and once they had enough of him, the pair quietly walked away.

Like his two-year-old brother, Badger, Brumby, is turning into quite the handsome youngster. Brumby and Badger, are offspring of the 4-year-old buckskin mare, Bonnie with their sire unknown. Because Bonnie has two young offspring on the range, it's likely that at least one of her c**ts will be removed. It's hard to imagine what it would be like for these two brothers, who are the best of friends, to be separated from each other and from their mother, but that's what happens during these terrible roundups.

If you haven't yet had a chance to comment on the roundup and removal plan for the McCullough Peaks herd, please do. Your comments will help Brumby and Badger, as well as, Hickory and Chaco, to stay on the range together, where they belong. Please click on the link to my blog for suggested talking points and a direct comment submission link. https://www.wildatheartimages.com/blog/mcpeakseatalkingpoints

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for speaking out for Brumby, Badger, Hickory, Chaco, and all the members of the McCullough Peaks Herd ❤

Posting again! In Max’s memory, please help with a cause dear to mama:

The BLM plans to drastically reduce a wild horse herd in Wyoming, to the point that it won’t be a genetically stable population. The purpose is to “keep the range healthy” - not for wildlife, though. For ranchers who have leases to graze on public land. But there is still time for the public to make comments. COMMENT PERIOD ENDS ON FEB 7 AT 4:30 MST!!!

This blog I’m sharing has talking points if you need, but please don’t copy/paste as identical comments can apparently be considered as a single item. https://wild-at-heart-images.pixpa.com/blog/comment-to-help-save-the-mccullough-peaks-wild-horses?fbclid=IwAR1tMkE3vOAb_pS0hU2uWNK4qzTafj2a4EYoTLlQzXm_fXVL-b3QMDeU_Yc&mibextid=Zxz2cZ

If nothing else, I hope people will get angry about this being the only comment period on a plan (of which the horses are only one part) that covers up to ten years. You read correctly: one comment period for a ten-year plan. That’s ridiculous, and is a prime example of a government agency skirting requirements.

But the horses deserve to live the only lives they’ve known without being bothered.

Washakie was born in 2001 beneath the rolling foothills, colorful badlands, and desert mountains that make up the 109,000-acre habitat area of the McCullough Peaks Herd Management Area (HMA) outside of Cody, Wyoming. In his younger years, Washakie was the toughest stallion on the range, a formidable presence that most stallions dared not challenge. But as Washakie grew older, he lost his family in battle and began a new phase of his life as a bachelor stallion; sometimes alone, but frequently in the company of other bachelors.

That all changed last spring, when 21-year-old Washakie was seen with a young mare known as Kenai and her newborn foal, Klondike Girl. Aided by his devoted friend and lieutenant, Chaco, Washakie looked after his new family with pride. Caring for and protecting Kenai and Klondike meant everything to Washakie -- and that was the most important thing to him during this last chapter of his life.

In mid-September of last year, Washakie looked exceedingly frail and thin. He stayed with his family as long as he could, but one day he left them and was spotted alone and far from the other horses. Although we didn't want to lose him, it was likely his time.

The lives of our wild horses, like Washakie, are complex, exciting, dramatic, and devastating -- much like our own. Stories like Washakie's, are what will be lost if the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proceeds with its plan to reduce the McCullough Peaks population by half. Kenai and Klondike could lose their freedom and spend the rest of their lives in government holding facilities.

Adding insult to injury is that the McCullough Peak's wild horses have a humane fertility control program in place. One-third of the horses are over the age of 15. The removal of the McCullough Peaks wild horses does not need to happen.

There is only one more day to take action in honor of Washakie and his family. The comment period closes tomorrow, February 7, at 4:30 PM MST. This link will take you to suggested talking points and a link to the BLM's comment page. https://wild-at-heart-images.pixpa.com/blog/comment-to-help-save-the-mccullough-peaks-wild-horses

Comment period ends on February 7th. If nothing else, I hope people will get angry about this being the only comment period on a plan (of which the horses are only one part) that covers up to ten years. You read correctly: one comment period for a ten-year plan. That’s ridiculous, and is a prime example of a government agency skirting requirements.

This tiny foal, now a yearling+ c**t named Tabasco, was born to the mare, Theya, and her band stallion, Tahlequah, on or around 09/05/21. That's Theya grazing right next to Tabasco. Beautiful Theya, is one of the mare, Taboo's, many daughters and was born in 2013. Theya is currently still with her mother, Taboo, and their band stallion, Tahlequah and all of her brothers and sisters and their offspring, including half brother Thor. With thirteen members, Tahlequah's band is the largest all-pinto family band at McCullough Peaks.

And I know you're probably getting tired of hearing this, but we still need more comments for the BLM's Scoping Document for their proposed removal of a substantial portion of the McCullough Peaks herd. If you haven't yet commented, you can do so until February 7. Please click on this link to my blog for suggested talking points and a link to the BLM's comment page. Thank you for caring about Theya and Tabasco and all the wild ones at McCullough Peaks. https://wild-at-heart-images.pixpa.com/blog/comment-to-help-save-the-mccullough-peaks-wild-horses

Harpers health is declining rapidly. He will die if we can’t get him the heart surgery he needs quickly. Sadly donations are way down and people helping us during our fundraisers is way down. The surgery will cost around $9,000. We have only raised $2,000 in the last few months. There are also other dogs in our care still need vet care during our efforts to raise funds. Please even if you can only spare $5 it will help us reach our goal and save his life.

Friends, it’s been a bit since I update. Dis puggy is still trying to get da diabetes under control. I now haz cataracts in both eyes and am basically blind. Mommy and Daddy are thinking about whether to risk an old puggy going under anesthesia to have the cataract fixing surgery... It’s expensive.
