Case of the day!

This patient would develop lesions along his shoulder and back after consecutive days of riding. The patient became very itchy and then severe lesions would begin to develop. He was treated with antibiotics, steroids, anti-inflammatories and immunomodulators throughout the time period of these few intermittent episodes. Allergy testing was performed, and his owner was very diligent in limiting any possible harmful exposures. Given where the lesions are located and biopsy results, a contact allergy was suspected. This owner tried several different saddle pads and changes in regimen, but after the final episode he was referred to UF for further diagnostics.

At the University of Florida, patch testing was performed. Interesting enough, he was found to be allergic to all typical saddle pad material except cotton. This handsome guy is now thriving in his new cotton gear and back to normal! Allergies can be tricky, and some more complicated than others!

Arthramid is one of our key players in synovial therapy yielding the results we are looking for!

Doesn’t fall under the classic biologic category, but a 2.5% Intra-articular polyacrylamide gel that targets the treatment of joint capsule inflammation (synovitis). Arthramid forms a “scaffold” inside the joint which preserves and regenerates joint tissue/synovium.

Essentially, it creates a healthier joint capsule, which in turn produces healthier joint fluid. The goal is to address the source of the inflammation and promote longevity.

There are so many joint therapy options out there, be sure to talk to us about which one is right for your horse.

Anyone guesses as to what this is?? Comment below!

Wood fence jump in front of your horse? These darn splinters can be sneaky! Thankfully the ultrasound is the perfect tool to help us get these out in a minimally invasive way. You can see the wood piece on the ultrasound highlighted in yellow.

A HUGE congratulations to Sue Drawdy! Truly an inspiration to the industry.

Performance Evaluation vs. Lameness exam- what's the difference?

Performance Evaluation: A thorough passive (palpation) and active (jogging/flexions) exam. This is more of a check in. We are looking for muscle soreness, joint soreness, foot conformation, body condition, and overall disposition. During this exam we may notice areas that improved since last time we have seen them- identifying trends that are vital in customizing their therapy. Your athlete may not need any treatment at this time, but it tells us how they are doing. Our hope is to prevent a problem before it becomes a performance deficit.

Lameness Exam: This is performed when a horse is already noticed to be off or lame in a particular leg/area. During these exams we are looking to localize the source of the lameness or performance deficit. Typically, local nerve blocks, radiographs, and ultrasound will be performed to identify the ultimate problem and treat it.

We are incredibly proud of our Arrow 5 athletes and grateful for the opportunity to support them in staying at the top of their game!

Eye= Emergency!

The eye really is an amazing, complex structure. However, the treatment of it is time sensitive to achieve the best outcome.

Signs to look for and when to call us:
1.) Squinting of one eye
2.) Swelling
3.) Excessive tearing
And of course, if anything else looks out of the ordinary give us a shout!

The most common things we see are allergies/obstructed tear duct, corneal ulcers, stromal abscesses, and squamous cell carcinoma of the third eyelid.

Common eye medications:
▪️Neopolydex- Antibiotic with steroid
▪️Neopolybac- Antibiotic
▪️Atropine- Dilates/pain control
▪️Voriconazole- Antifungal
▪️Serum- Promotes corneal healing
▪️Sodium chloride- Removes the edema/blue discoloration of cornea
▪️Cyclosporine- For immune mediated conditions
▪️Banamine- Anti-inflammatory..and many more !

*Neopolybac is okay to applied to the affected eye until we arrive, but NEVER use neopolyDEX without having the eye stained first. This can worsen an existing ulcer/ condition making treatment much more difficult.

We hope you never have to become familiar with treating an eye, but please let us know if you have any questions and drop them below!
