I found a great new use (two actually) for our lovely lavender syrup. I made cocoa with the Hershey’s recipe, but used the syrup instead of sugar. It was great!
I also discovered that adding lavender syrup as you’re whipping cream makes it delicious. I used it on peach pie.
So now I’m imagining cocoa made with lavender syrup topped by whipped cream with a touch of lavender syrup. Heaven!

A cold and very windy day at the lavender farm, but I was able to pick up the last of what I need for Saturday’s Thanksgiving market at the BCPA. So different from a week ago!
Hope to see you all on Saturday.

I’m busy getting ready for this Saturday’s Thanksgiving Market in Bloomington. This year it’s at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA), 600 N. East Street, 9- noon. I’ll have my usual goodies. Come get some lavender syrup for holiday treats. See you Saturday!

It’s been a long time since I’ve been at the farm (I had a nasty, flu-like thing) and so much has changed. Not a leaf on a tree, and the only signs of color are the feverfew plants that completely overran my chamomile and some vestiges of bittersweet. “Bittersweet”, by the way, is the perfect descriptor of my mood in fall.
I hope to see you all at the Thanksgiving Market at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts a week from tomorrow. I’ll send more details soon.

It’s beautiful out here at the farm. After post-surgery (shoulder) imposed home confinement I couldn’t do much except watch our dog (Abby) and granddog (Bart) romp in the autumnal sunlight.
There were even a few stems of lavender to pick! I always feel better for being out here.

I had to wait til the end of lavender season to get major shoulder surgery. Pretty miserable at the moment but this too shall pass. At least I can still pull buds off stems!

A recent trip to the farm.
Here’s a poem that captures my wonder at the beauty out here:

Do flowers have a will?
A blossomy intention?
Or do they merely wait
For rain, for sun, for bee?

My lavender persists
Beyond my inattention
Past frost, past drought, past time
For all the world to see.

It wills itself alive
It wills itself to be.
It wills itself to last
It wills itself to be.

I can almost tell the season by the insects and other creatures rotating through the farm. Right now the crickets are quieter, the butterflies are fewer, the Mason bees are gone but the big old bumble bees are still bumbling. And the wolf spiders are back - always a sign of fall. Enjoy these last warm days.

Not a single Monarch at our farm this year. We have milkweed, but may need to plant much more. The idea that Monarchs might disappear is just hard to take. The article pictured below says that 90% of Western Monarchs are gone and that there is a big drop in eastern Monarchs.

Our land at the farm was once home to the Potawatomi and Kickapoo (and others). When I’m out here at the farm I often think about the times before settlers took the land, the time before the Blackhawk War pushed nearly every single Native person out of the state to the West and North. I know my dad and others found artifacts - arrowheads at least- out here when they were kids. I would love to find one. We’ve found lots of things from the late 1800s - like old ax heads and bottles and other tools. Every time we plow or dig I’m hopeful!

The scenery sure looks different out at the lavender farm once the corn is harvested! I’m still “harvesting” lavender which is a lovely way to spend a morning (even if it’s 90). Just so peaceful.
