We are a little late posting our thanks. But Brian, Stephanie, and Alexa chose to help us as part of their leadership project with Leadership Southern Leavenworth County. This amazing group created a raffle and were able to donate over $1,600 to the rescue. This came in at a perfect time when we greatly needed help with some vet costs. We cannot thank this group enough for what they did for us.

Humane Education: Retractable Leashes
There are many different types of leashes on the market, and it can be overwhelming to choose from. What's the best fit for my dog? The most cost-effective? Best for training? There's many different opinions, but one that most dog experts tend to agree on is to stay away from retractable leashes. Why, you may ask? Here's a few reasons why experts say retractable leashes may not be the best choice, and some alternatives to try instead!

1. Retractable leashes can lead to injury - If you've ever had to grab your dog's retractable leash line with your bare hands when they've lunged at something, or had the cord wrap around your legs, you know how painful that can be! The thin line can slice your skin (or your dogs!) or cause burns. Additionally, if your dog suddenly jerks and engages the lock, the sudden stop can cause severe injury to their neck or windpipe.

2. Retractable leashes can malfunction, break, or tangle - The mechanisms in the plastic holder can jam, and your leash may be stuck in the locked or the loose position, or even detach altogether; you run the risk of losing your dog if they are able to take off without your control. Additionally, if the thin line tangles into a knot that's too tight, it can end up breaking the mechanism, or even knot around your dog's limbs and injure them.

3. Retractable leash lines are hard to see - The thin leash line can become a trip hazard for you, your pet, and strangers if not spotted.

4. They reinforce pulling - There’s a misconception that these leashes prevent pulling but the opposite is true. When dogs are walked on retractable leashes, the tendency is to release more of the line when the dog starts to pull forward. When the line is released at the first sign of tension, pulling is reinforced and the dog learns that pulling works to get more freedom. Once the dog is at the end of the line, they will become frustrated and will pull harder.

5. Retractable leashes are easily dropped, and not a good fit for scared dogs - Dogs, especially newly adopted shelter dogs, may be nervous of the world around them. If they bolt, and you drop the leash (as most retractables do not have a good grip!) the plastic clattering to the ground can startle the dog - even more so if they start to run and the loud leash is "chasing" them! There have been many unfortunate situations of this exact scenario happening with newly adopted dogs who's owner had them on a retractable leash, and the dog was lost.

These are just a FEW reasons we recommend avoiding these types of leashes. Everyone has their preferences, but we highly recommend using a 6-foot standard leash for daily walks with Fido. If you want to be able to give your pup more freedom on walks, and like the length that retractable leashes can offer, try a long-line lead instead! They have the desired effect, without the drawbacks of retractables.

We hope this information is useful, and that you can share to help educate more folks!

National is a day to honor the service and sacrifices of the U.S. Military Working Dogs both currently serving and those throughout our nation's history.

There are roughly 2,500 working dogs serving in the U.S. military today, with about 700 deployed overseas. They are vital members of our nation's armed forces and its mission to protect and defend our country.

Today, we take a moment of "paws" to salute our nation's K9 Veterans for both their service and sacrifice. Thank you for everything you do!

Drum roll please!!
🥁 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁

Our sweet boy Archie that has been with us almost a year has been adopted by a very awesome couple. They came by to meet one of our other pups and after talking decided to meet Archie and fell in love with him and after a week of fostering him decided we was going to stay with them forever. The biggest kick we got out of this was after a couple days of them fostering we called to check in on him and were immediately told by the husband that he couldn’t believe he had been with us so long, and that he was a “Damn good dog” well we couldn’t agree more! 💙🐾🐶

We had two new faces join us this last week that will soon be looking for their forever homes.
First is Goobs, a 6-8 month old German Shepherd mix. He came to us from Wichita, he is very sweet, a little skittish with new people, but once he gets to know you he is a big ole love bug.
Next is little Xena a 9-10 week old Husky mix puppy. She is as spunky and as playful as they come and full of sass. She loves her foster dog siblings and is still trying to figure out the kitty cats.
🐶🐾

If you’re interested in wanting to give one of these sweet faces a forever home please fill out an adoption application at www.riverviewrescue.org

Meet Archie 🐾

Archie is a five year old, handsome German shepherd that came to us recently. He is as sweet as can be and is a very well mannered boy he knows a couple tricks. He loves to play in the pool and play fetch. Archie is looking for a home that has older children as he doesn’t enjoy being around small children. He however does enjoy playing with other dogs so a fur sibling may be right up his alley. We are unsure how he would do it a kitty cat sibling

If you are interested in giving this big 84 pound guy a loving home please fill out an application at Riverviewrescue.org

Our Story

Riverview Rescue was founded in 2017 by Levi Monahan. Levi grew up in the dog world since he was born. His family has and still currently owns a dog kennel in Leavenworth, Kansas that has been in business for over 50 years. Levi learned quickly he wanted to help dogs in need and find them forever homes. He met Kayla Sanchez almost a year later when they went to Texas on a mission trip to help dogs and families affected by Hurricane Harvey. They became best friends who ultimately have the same goals and share the same passion of doing dog rescue. Levi asked Kayla to join him in his efforts and help grow the rescue. Soon after Texas Kayla became director of Riverview Rescue and with Levi’s help they saved and successfully placed over 500 dogs in loving homes in 2017. Currently the Riverview Rescue team has grown and has 11 dedicated individuals who care for the rescue dogs on a daily basis. The rescue has grown from just 5 original dogs to over 60. The dogs come from families wishing to surrender their pets, they are pulled from high kill shelters, and they also come from puppy mill auctions. Your support and donations are greatly appreciated. If it wasn't for the fosters, adopters, donors and volunteers Riverview Rescue could not save as many lives as they do.

“Saving one dog will not change the world, but for that one dog, the world will change forever.” -Unknown
