The American Street Cat, Inc. Having no paid officers or volunteers, TASC is a grass roots organization that believes in transparency about who we are and what we do.

Think of us as blue collar folks working for blue collar cats. The American Street Cat is NOT a shelter. We are a small group of volunteers focused on doing Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and we foster in our own homes (with our own resident animals) only cats and kittens found during our TNR efforts. TASC does not handle public intakes. If you need to relinquish your pet or are concerned about stray c

Friends of/adopters from TASC need to rehome a recent addition to their family after discovering that he truly is NOT okay sharing space with another cat.

Sammy’s original owners, who were hoarders, passed away, and the group that stepped in to help assumed that he’d be good with a feline companion. This has proven not to be the case. After several months of trying to keep the peace, the decision to rehome, though a tough one, is the right one.

The work week ended with getting this relative newcomer to the office colony. With 11 cats waiting to be fed, we went with the bottle method, which was thwarted by a biped. “Are you trying to catch a cat?” What trapper has never had this happen? 🤦‍♀️😂

We ended up getting him by hand. Sometimes, darting away is a game to these cats and not indicative of their disposition. Gunnar is a gentle and friendly fellow. Vet appointment to follow!

Low cost services for exam, neuter, vaccinations (rabies & FVRCP), and snap test will cost $170. If you’re inclined to help us offset costs, please donate at PayPal.me/TASCinc

Meet Cicero, named so because his orations spoke to his finders from a hundred yards away last Saturday. He was so scared out on the Brooklyn streets, but they coaxed him into a carrier, and our work began.

We were fortunate to get an appointment on Wednesday to neuter and vaccinate. He has deep wounds behind his ears from scratching due to ear mites, and one of his canines is broken at the gum line. This one year old sweetheart clearly had a rough time outdoors!

The goal here is to find Cicero a loving forever home, but he needs that partial tooth extracted, so we requested an estimate. Pre-op bloodwork was done. Wednesday’s bill plus the dental adds up to $1060.

If you could help us and Cicero out, we would greatly appreciate it.

With a blizzard looming on Christmas Eve 2010, elusive 8-month old Beyla was cornered on a neighbor’s porch, unable to escape our advances due to a broken femur. Her street smarts gave way to common sense, and once we got her through surgery, she became a most beloved member of her adopter’s household.

With great sadness, we received news that she succumbed to lymphoma last month. Our hearts go out to her family, to whom she brought ten years of joy and happiness. Her dad’s smile on her adoption day says it all.

Beyla is memorable to TASC for so many reasons. She was our tenth intake and a true gift. Not a Christmas Eve has passed that we haven’t thought of her. Happy rescueversary, sweet angel. Peace be with you and your family.

Another young lad infiltrated the office colony, less than a week since our last new arrival. Residents in the area are clearly not neutering, and their teenagers are darting out the door looking for love. Of course, no LOST CAT signs go up, so we call “fair game” and do what we do best: vet and sterilize the kiddos to ensure happier and healthier futures.

This handsome young Snowshoe showed up for dinner with the eartipped regulars at Kathryn’s office. Without invitation, he marched right in the door. He is intact and not microchipped. Full vetting will occur next week no matter what, then we’ll work on finding his forever home unless a rightful owner comes forward. In honor of Kathryn’s childhood Siamese cat, we’re calling this sweetheart Lao-Tzu.

Another reminder about the importance of microchipping your pet AND keeping the owner info current!

These photos of Angel were taken 3 years ago when she was dumped on the grounds of our favorite cloistered monastery. After full vetting and some major dental work, Angel had a short stay in foster before being adopted. Her microchip was registered to her new owner.

So imagine our surprise to receive an e-mail on Thanksgiving Eve that Angel had been found as a stray and taken to a shelter. As it turns out, she was rehomed by her owner in October 2020 due to a new husband's allergies, but the chip information was not transferred, and the original adopter cannot get ahold of the newer owner.

We are working on getting Angel out of the shelter she was taken to. It is a no-kill shelter, and the folks are very kind. Angel is safe and well-cared for. The problem lies in finding a foster home for her, but preferably a forever home. This sweet old girl truly deserves some permanence!

Update on Luna 🙂

For those of you who donated to her GoFundMe campaign, please be on the lookout for an e-mail offering a refund.

On the eve of her surgery, X-ray images revealed a compelling argument against performing a femoral head ostectomy (FHO). Bones had already started to mend, and she was not in any pain. The surgeon felt that the procedure would make no difference to her long term health, and we of course respected the professional opinion.

Thank you to everyone who supported Luna, whether emotionally or financially - or both!

Rescue advocates: As giving season begins, please check out The Onyx and Breezy Foundation and their commitment to helping individuals as well as non-profits. They have approved TASC grant applications in the past, and they would not have been able to earmark the funds without the help of the general public.

Their in-person Annual Gala has given way to a virtual event again this year. Click the link below for additional information.

Luna’s surgery date has been set for Tuesday, 9/14.
Many thanks for the donations to date, but we could still use more help. She’s an adoptable little pistol, and a full recovery is expected.

Friends, supporters, adopters...

Please consider supporting Luna's cause. More information (invoicesand estimates) can be viewed in the comments below.

Full disclosure: $100 came in for Luna last month, $83 of which went to her initial vet bill. We've incurred $89 in additional vetting (spay, vaccines), but this fundraiser is exclusively for her impending surgery.

Meet Luna, who wandered onto our kind neighbor’s property after a vehicular trauma which left her with a broken femur at the neck as well as a severed tip of the tail. Orthopedic surgery is in her very near future. Today’s veterinary costs are posted (deep gratitude for the deep discount!) as well as Luna’s X-ray. An estimate for her FHO surgery is in the works— verbally, we’ve been given a $900 goal.

Any financial assistance would truly be appreciated. There’s a donate button on theamericanstreetcat.org or you can go to PayPal.me/TASCinc

Luna endeared herself to all office colleagues today and will hopefully have a foster home available to her by week’s end. Her 5.5 month old kitten energy is perfectly balanced by her genuinely loving nature. She’ll be adoption-ready and running full speed ahead on all 4 pistons in no time!

It’s been so hot that the cats aren’t appearing at their usual times during business hours, so spotting Harry this week put smiles on our faces at the office. The mysterious pre-Memorial Day wound that earned him a re-trapping and a trip to the vet has healed so nicely since his release 5 weeks ago. A little more hair growth, and no one will be the wiser.

So nice to see Harry arrive for dinner tonight after being released yesterday morning. Given that two colony cats slightly bully him, he times his appearances with caution. So far so good with that wound. Once the hair grows back in, no one will be the wiser. As if the ear tip alone isn’t street cred enough!

6 days of monitoring is just what Harry needed before returning to his colony this morning. His sutured wound is healing nicely, and he’s still benefiting from a long-acting antibiotic injection. He wanted nothing to do with the twice daily housekeeping routine and couldn’t have been happier to be back in familiar yards and back lots. Take care, big boy - we’ll see you at dinner time!

It’s never too soon to work on winter shelters. We received 4 vaccine coolers from a vet clinic and improvised with the orientation for creature comfort. Straps are on order to hold the lid in place as the back wall, and we have a few other modifications to make. The prototype will be ready for a test run courtesy of the house cats in another week or so.

There’s no such thing as “trapping retirement.” When a TNR’d workplace colony member showed up for dinner wounded, Kathryn geared up! There’s no telling the source of the puncture, but thanks to a selfless veterinarian who wanted nothing more than to leave at closing time today, Harry is on the mend and will be monitored at TASC HQ through the holiday weekend before rejoining his mates.

Rescue work sees both “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat,” and we suffered the latter this week.

An older, intact newcomer arrived at Kathryn’s workplace pleading for help. He was visibly underweight and dehydrated. In short order, he was trapped, and on the same day, was sedated and examined. Not only was he positive for both FeLV and FIV, but he’d suffered a head trauma that dislodged part of his lower jawbone. We decided to humanely euthanized Sprite.

Folks, these are not easy decisions. This is only the 2nd same-day euthanasia we’ve faced in our 10+ years of trapping. Groups with higher trapping volumes are likely making the calls more frequently. It’s not necessarily about resources, but about understanding the reality of the situation and not prolonging the animal’s suffering.

RIP sweet Sprite. Thank you for showing us your belly as you flirtatiously inch-wormed, blinked, and mewed yourself into our brief care.

TASC in NYC and in TX

The American Street Cat is not an intake shelter. We are a small group of volunteers focused on doing Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and we foster in our own homes, with our own resident animals, only cats and kittens found during our TNR efforts. TASC does not handle public intakes or pull from other shelters. If you need to relinquish your pet or are concerned about stray cats in your area, please contact your local veterinarian and animal rescue groups for advice and additional resources. We encourage everyone who reaches out for help with a colony to learn about TNR and become an active part of the solution to the problem at hand.
