Schnauzer Rescue Qld Inc We rescue or re-home schnauzers of any size in Queensland & connect them with new owners. Our aim always is to place the dog in the best possible forever home.

We are a group of volunteers with various backgrounds and experience with the schnauzer breed. We help co-ordinate the rescue and re-homing of schnauzers and schnauzer-crosses throughout South East Queensland, Australia. We also understand that surrendering a family pet can be a distressing decision, so be assured your privacy is respected at all times and our members manage your enquiry with conf

identiality and discretion. If you are needing to surrender or re-home your dog, or know of one in need, we are always open to take your message or call or email [email protected]

As a Not-For-Profit, donations to our group of any amount are put toward the many costs associated with dogs coming in to our care and are always appreciated. Our much anticipated Schnauzer Rescue Calendar is our main fundraiser for the year and goes on sale via Sticky Tickets around October/November annually. Our Wait List for 2023/24 is now open - please read the requirements and submit your application via https://forms.gle/tYmt39hvRxijcs6G6

❓WHY DO DOGS ESCAPE ❓🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

A long but worthwhile read, particularly if you have a wanderer, an opportunist or a busy household where someone's always leaving a gate or door open 😏

✅ Excellent tips if you're no longer working from home providing company for your schnauzer, or even just moved to a new neighbourhood - all reasons dogs may be bored, looking for new adventures in the area, or just want to visit that cute new floof that moved in a few houses away 😍

🆘5 Reasons Why Dogs Escape and How to Prevent it!
🐾Every dog owner knows the sinking feeling they get when they come home to find their furry friend is nowhere to be found. Ensure your dog’s microchip contact details are correct & flag the microchip as missing/stolen.
Dogs escape for many reasons. Here are some of the most common ones and what you can do to stop them.
Reason #1: Social Isolation and Frustration
🐾One of the most common reasons dogs escape: Non desexed dogs are more likely to escape & roam in search of a mate.
🐾Also because they are bored and lonely. If your dog is left alone for long periods of time without any opportunities for interaction, it may start looking for ways to entertain itself. This is especially true for puppies or adolescents who don’t have other outlets for their energy. Additionally, if your dog’s environment is relatively barren (without playmates or toys), they may become frustrated and try to find a way out.
🐾If you think this might be the case, try giving your dog more attention when you’re home and providing them with plenty of toys and opportunities to socialize when you’re gone.
Perhaps look into Day Care on the days you are out ALL day. Or employ a professional dog walker that can come and collect your fur baby and take them for a walk!
Reason #2: Fear and Anxiety
🐾Another common reason for attempted escapes is fear or anxiety. If your dog is afraid of thunderstorms or fireworks, they may try to run away when they hear the noise. Or if they’ve never been left alone, they may become anxious when they’re suddenly separated from you. This was seen to happen MORE when the lockdown finished and people returned to the office.
🐾Although the temperament and anxiety levels of individual dogs can vary significantly, some breeds can generally handle being home alone better.
🐾Standard Poodles, Pugs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Maltese and Bernese Mountain Dogs are a few.
🐾If you know you are going to be away for more extended periods, try easing your dog into the new schedule slowly.
🐾You may wish to invest in a ‘Thunder Jacket’ that can be worn on stormy days, explore Day Care options, leave a radio on in the background to provide comfort, or speak to your vet to see if anxiety medication is a valid option.
Reason #3: Energy PLUS!
🐾Some dogs have the energy to BURN. Again, this is especially the case for puppies and adolescents. Certain breeds, like Retrievers, Spaniels, Collies, Pointers, Boxers, Dalmations and German Shepherds, are more prevalent.
A nice long walk in the morning can help ‘tire’ them and keep them satisfied. It is also suggested that another walk when you get home from work makes a huge difference. They will get to know the exercise routine.
If you can’t walk them 1-2 times a day, perhaps look at employing the services of a professional dog walker.
Reason #4: They’re Following Their Nose
🐾Dogs have an incredible sense of smell especially Bloodhounds, Bassets, Shepherds and Retrievers. And, if they catch a whiff of something interesting, they may be compelled to follow it. This could be anything from another animal to food cooking in a neighbour’s house. Non desexed dogs may be searching for a mate.
🐾Unfortunately, you cannot control smells outside of your backyard. But if you think this is why your dog is escaping, it is a matter of ensuring the backyard is as secure as possible.
🐾If they are ‘escaping’ while on a lead, invest in a secure harness that prevents them from slipping their collar. I recommend the EzyDog Harness. You can also try training your dog to ‘come’ on command. This command is invaluable to keep them safe whenever you are out and about. Always have an ID Tag on their collar with a contact phone number. Use a lockable anti theft Super lock up leads if leaving them tethered briefly.
🐾A secure backyard will hopefully do the trick however investing in a GPS-tracking device is a great backup solution.
🐾Installing a dog door door allowing dogs access both indoors & outdoors decreases a dog’s desire to escape.
Reason #5: Curiosity/adventure seeking
🐾Another common reason dogs try to escape is that they’re curious or adventure-seeking by nature. More common with two dogs as one may influence the other. They feel braver in pairs. If this is the case with your dog or dogs, it’s important to provide them with plenty of outlets for their energy and curiosity so they don’t feel the need to satisfy those urges by running away.
🐾Try taking them on long walks or runs, playing interactive games together, and providing them with chew toys or bones that will keep them occupied when you’re not around.
🐾Employ a dog walker at least a couple of times per week if you don’t have time to walk them before & after work.
🐾A secure backyard is obviously essential as adventurous dogs are often most prone to escape. This is another reason to invest in a GPS tracking device for worst-case scenarios. No one wants to come home to an empty backyard.
🐾Install a camera to watch what your pet does during the day. Also keeps them safer from theft.
🐾Look for weak points.
🐾Watch your dog to see if they are starting to dig near a fence.
🐾Regularly do boundary checks to see if a paling has come loose.
🐾Add a lock to all outside gates so they cannot be accidentally opened by a delivery person/stranger. Keeps them safer from theft too.
🐾Chew toys, bouncy balls and other entertainment are a must.
🐾Products like Thunder Jackets or anxiety medication may provide comfort (please consult a vet).
🐾A Pet GPS tracker can give you peace of mind as you can check on her whereabouts at all times and be alerted the second they escape.
🐾The love we have for our dogs is not in question. But we must always remember that our dogs often live for the moments they are with us. And if we cannot be with them due to work and other commitments at certain times of the day, we owe it to them to make their environment safe and entertaining.

‼️ Timely reminder! It's not too cold for ticks 🪳

🐾Tick Paralysis🐾

In Queensland Ticks can bite all year round not just in the warmer months. It is very important that your pet is on tick prevention all year round! Especially after all this rain we are having. We have had already one case this week!

These Brands have convenient and simple options available:
🐶- Bravecto(chew, spot on), Simparica (chew), Nexgard (chew)
🐱-Bravecto, Bravecto plus, Nexgard Spectra (spot on)

Another great way to help prevent ticks on your pet is doing daily tick searches. Even if you are on the couch watching TV you can just run your hands all over their body.

If you find a tick on your pet, it is important to contact a vet clinic as soon as possible to have the tick removed and identified! Paralysis ticks are life threatening to your pets if not treated! If you find what you think may be a paralysis tick on your pet, this is an EMERGENCY and should not be ignored!

If your dog has a Paralysis tick you may see the following symptoms in your dog or cat:

• Weakness to full paralysis of limbs (hindlimbs progressing to front limbs)
• Wobbliness
• Breathing difficulties and/or rapid breathing
• Decreased blinking
• Changes to voice (meow/bark)
• Vomiting/Regurgitation
• Loss of appetite

Paralysis ticks are found on the East Coast of Australia and are prevalent in South East Queensland. Paralysis ticks are active all year round, even through the winter months!

Paralysis ticks will become more active through warmer months and high rainfall.

For all questions in relation to Tick Paralysis and prevention products please contact one of our friendly nurses on (07) 5535 1928.

💙 Are you ready to fall in love? 💙

💙 Meet Lil’ Jeffy, your tiny 3.5 yo companion with a heart as big as the sky 💙

From a neglected little boy to a brave survivor, Lil’ Jeffy has overcome so much in recent weeks he’s been in our care. His journey from hardship to happiness is nothing short of miraculous, and now he’s ready to share his boundless love with you. 💙

Lil’ Jeffy’s Tale: A tiny boy with a huge heart, Lil’ Jeffy’s eyes are windows to a soul that has endured yet flourished. Once timid and scared, he’s now blossoming into a confident and joyful spirit. His resilience is inspiring; despite having 27 teeth removed, he’s eating carefully curated meals, and sleeping like a champ. His luxating patella might make him hop occasionally, but it doesn’t stop him from enjoying life’s little pleasures—like mad zoomies and cozy cuddles.

🐾🐾. A Day in the Life of Lil’ Jeffy: He’s learning to be a social butterfly—his cute face turns heads at Bunnings and PetBarn, where he loves all the attention he gets. He’s mastered the doggy door, sits patiently for his freshly prepared gourmet meals, and knows that the great outdoors is his playground. Each evening, he cherishes cuddles on the couch or bed, and when he’s had his fill, he tucks himself into his crate, dreaming of tomorrow’s adventures.

🏠 The Perfect Forever Home: Lil’ Jeffy thrives when his humans are around so we’re looking for a similar home.. A fur-brother or sister would be a bonus to guide him through life’s twists and turns. He’s working on overcoming anxiety when left alone—so your calm presence will be his comfort. He’s looking for someone who sees beyond his imperfections, someone who understands that the truest companionship comes from the heart.

💙 Join Lil’ Jeffy’s Journey: Don’t miss out on the chance to give Lil’ Jeffy a forever home. Apply now and be part of his happiness ever after. He may be a ‘work in progress,’ but his love knows no bounds 🥺 With every look into his little brown eyes, he promises to put the biggest smile on your face and bring joy and laughter into your life.

✅ If you think Lil’ Jeffy and you would be a great furever fit, please send your application in writing to [email protected] (or let someone not on social media know about our search). We want to hear all about you and why you'd make the ideal furever home for Lil’ Jeffy. Don’t forget to include your location and phone number, or submit via our 2023-24 Wait List Application form - https://forms.gle/sJvjnK1hFQEwZ4GX7

📌 Note! Jeffy is due to have his desexing surgery ✂️ in mid-June and we’d like him to recuperate in his new (hopefully furever) home, as that will strengthen the bond (we all know what males are like when they’ve got an ouch! 🤕)

🌸🌼 💝 None of us would be here without our mothers 🌼🌸💝

💖 Today as we celebrate the many types of mothers and mother-figures in our world, we particularly acknowledge and thank all the fur mums out there who take on the added role of welcoming another schnauzer (or two) into their home💖

💖 Like Deborah pictured here, who didn’t hesitate to add the very sweet, but practically deaf 14.5yo Tessa to her home recently 💖 Deb is just one of the many fur mums we’ve had the pleasure to include in our Rescue family over the years, and be very thankful for 🙏

💝 We send our thanks to all the mums out there 💝

😔 This is heart wrenching but sadly true, possibly even in our schnauzer community.

🚩 Please please ... research, research, research and don't just fall for those gorgeous button eyes without knowing ALL the facts about the origins and background of the parents and breeder. You can be damn sure, that puppy will still be there tomorrow for someone else to buy if you say no. 🚩

🚨 CASE UNDER INVESTIGATION
183 dogs and puppies taken into RSPCA Qld custody from an alleged puppy farm in South East Queensland.

On Tuesday April 23, RSPCA Queensland Inspectors responded to an animal welfare complaint relating to a large number of dogs on a property allegedly living in poor conditions.

Alongside RSPCA Inspectors, RSPCA animal care and veterinary staff assessed all animals located on the property accompanied by Council and Queensland Police.

As a result of investigations, 183 dogs and puppies were seized by RSPCA Queensland Inspectors and transported to the RSPCA.

All animals are receiving care at the RSPCA in accordance with their varying medical and behavioural needs.

The case is currently under investigation.

If you have an animal welfare concern, please contact the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL or lodge an animal welfare complaint on our website 👉 bit.ly/4bjKd7k so our team can investigate.

RSPCA Queensland is urging members of the public to do their research before purchasing animals and always consider adopting when looking for a new pet.

If you are intending to buy from a breeder, search for a reputable breeder and visit the property where the animal was born, meet the parents of that pet and ensure the breeder is providing a high standard of care and living conditions for their animals.

📣 UPDATE 🥳 The. Best. News. 🥳

When a foster parent calls to say "we want to adopt him now" you know he's found the perfect home 💙 We're all so happy for Lucky and thankful for people that give older dogs a second chance.

🤞We've got all our fingers (and paws) crossed that it’s 3rd time lucky for this beautiful boy after he’d already been surrendered to a vet 2 years ago 😔

😵‍💫 A very big Mini for his 10.5 years, he arrived weighing in at 16kgs! Thanks to a sensible diet and daily walks (which he loved!), he left our care today with a trimmer shape and super chilled manner 😎

💙 He starts life in what we're sure will be his furever home, complete with a new fur bro, conveniently in a 50s plus village where he'll no doubt charm the residents on his daily rounds.

In the words of Renae his carer, "he's been the goodest boy" and only deserves love and comfort for his later years 🙏💝

For all the dog park lovers - here's some good tips on dog park etiquette ✅️ We know it's not for everyone.

For all the dog park lovers - here's some good tips on dog park etiquette ✅️ We know it's not for everyone.

❗Controversial... but no toys should be used in a dog park around others.
It may not happen today or next week but some dogs react very badly to sharing toys. Others will become targets of pestering dogs and those dogs may not give up until they have the others toy.
Dog Parks...I have to confess I am firmly in the "nope" side with dog parks....but I do know others go there with no issues and have a great time.
For some dogs they are a great option.
For others....they would be a very unwise place to go.
If your dog spend the time racing and barking at dogs on the other side of the fence, is your dog having a good time, or could they be "practicing" the very behaviour that you desperately want to stop at your own home with the neighbours dog ?

No matter what my opinion is I thought some people would like some tips on dog park "etiquette".

If you go there to catch up with friends... remember your dog needs actively supervised...incidents that happen in a second often have a build up period and if you can stop and intervene before an incident...everyone wins.

⚠️Be aware of dogs rushing to meet the "newbie" when you are entering.
⚠️Over aroused dogs don't tend to make good decisions.
⚠️Don't let dogs just "sort it out themselves" they will....and you may not like it. You have no idea of just how the other dog could react.
⚠️If your dog wants to leave...go. Even if you have only just arrived, advocate for your dog and leave.
⚠️If there is a tussle, don't automatically think it is an aggressive dog involved, they may just be communicating. It is also really important to keep calm when you see a tussle, dogs will feel your energy.
⚠️Interrupt play if you feel uncomfortable with how it is progressing. Take the time to teach your dog how to "break" when they are playing. This should be practiced many times before you need it, or attempt it.
⚠️Be aware that many dogs with high energy may not be thinking clearly when they run up to yours and engage immediately. These dogs can be considered rude by other dogs and this can cause issues.

Keep play session shorter rather than longer....hyper arousal and hyper play can easily turn to something no-one wants when there are longer durations of play.

If your dog truly enjoys dog parks.....great.

If your dog never enters a dog park....that is absolutely fine too.

Many people wonder about the significance of a purple poppy, both on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.

💜 It's in memory of the thousands of dogs and other animals that were used, and continue to be used both in war and peacetime. "As beasts of burden, messengers, protectors, mascots, and friends, these war animals have demonstrated true valour and an enduring partnership with humans." 💜

This is by FAR one piece of advice that can help everything. Especially if you have a reactive dog 💥
It can take a while to get into the habit of actually doing this though.

There is one thing that ALL good trainers have in common.
We are TOTALLY aware of EVERYTHING around us.

We may be helping the dog in front of us but we are totally aware of what is behind us, around us, the sounds, the movement....the possible and probable.
The environment and what is around can both positively or negatively affect your dog....immensely.

Windy day ?
Your dog was aware of the 20 dogs on your street...now it is aware of 100 in the area and cannot pin point their distance as well as before. This can make some dogs on edge. The information is distracting.
Most trainers dislike wind.

Car parked ?
There could be a cat under it, a dog about to be let out of the back seat or boot area. Is there a driver in the front about to drive off....is it likely to be a very noisy car ?

Children in a front yard playing ?
Are they about to run out the gate ? Does one have a scooter about to leave ? Are they quiet or are they excited ?

Dog behind a gate ?
Is it older ? Is it there to alert its humans ? Is the gate secure or is there a section of the fence it could easily jump?

Dog on lead being walked ?
Is the walker aware of their own dogs behaviour ? Is the dog straining on the lead (this can lead to a reaction for some dogs). Is this dog giving yours a heavy stare or just a glance ?

At a local field....
Is there another dog or more than one ? Is someone throwing a ball nearby and oblivious to how close it can get to your dog. Is a dog off lead running and in a hyper excited state ?
Is one dog barking incessantly ?

So....how on earth can this help your dog ?

Awareness, awareness of environment, possible issues and most importantly how your dog reacts.
Many times I am told behaviour has come "out of the blue".
In the vast majority of cases it hasn't come out of the blue......all signs were already there.
Just not picked up on.

If you can tune into the environment and watch your dog you WILL learn valuable information.

Is the wind too much ? Does it negatively impact your walk every time it is windy ?
That is information you can use. Walk when it is calmer.

Is your dog ball obsessed ? The dogs at the field have a ball 30 metres away from you.....is that why your dog has changed their behaviour ?

Does your dog suddenly dislike large white dogs ? Are you aware that the dog that barks the most on your walk is the large white dog on the corner by your house....the same corner where loud cars speed past ?

This takes a while to perfect but you can absolutely start to tune in more by stopping a few times on your walk and listening to the environment around you.
That is a great start.
Can you hear that loud motorcycle down the block heading your way?.....you can now prepare your dog that doesn't like motorbikes (with focus on you, encouraging sniffing to relax or pull out a treat/toy to focus on or sniff out).

Did a mower just start a few doors in front of you ? Cross the road and encourage calmness and reward looking at the mower from a distance instead of forcing your dog to walk right past the object it dislikes.

All of this helps you make better decisions, but much more than that you will begin to see and hear things that affect your dog that you would have never noticed before.
You will KNOW that your dogs tail is bristling because you are coming up a parked car that a cat has just ran under, you can cross the road to avoid an issue......or get focus on you as you pass.
You will KNOW that the hesitancy in walking past a certain house is because there is a dog on their path that stares heavily at yours...again you can help your dog through that now you are aware.......BEFORE an issues occurs.

So give it a go.
Start to listen.
Start to look for possible issues rather than be forced to be reactive.

I promise you it will change everything.
