Rising Tide
In November 2023 3,000 people descended on Horseshoe Beach, Newcastle and blocked the export of coal from the world’s largest coal port for more than 30 hours, over 2 days. 100 people were arrested on the water in their kayaks at the end of the demonstration, the oldest being 97 year old Reverend Alan Stuart. The demonstration was broadcast internationally on news programs.
Court magistrate Stephen Olischlager stated.
"This was not selfishly motivated. They are valuable contributors to society, persons who are intelligent ... and making a real contribution to society."
