We are a Belgian start-up focused on growing delicious, healthy crops in a sustainable manner. By using hydroponics and vertical farming methods, combined with the latest advancements in LED lighting, we aim to grow food as close as possible to the consumers with as little input as possible. In order to provide all of us with healthy and sustainable crops, we value our strong partnerships. Hence,

we are always available to meet new partners who are willing to grow along with us. We are a proud member of Start it @ KBC.

Without a doubt it was our delight to have Joy as our Plant Scientist Intern 👩‍🔬 in September. She is following a second Bioengineering master with a focus on Medical Biotechnology at VUB.

💬 Here is what she said when we asked about her experience:

➡️ How would you describe your internship at Urban Harvest?

If I could describe my internship in two words, it will be fun and interesting. I learned a lot of new things about vertical farming, strawberries, and bumblebees. I not only learnt theoretical things, but also gained a lot of work experience. It was interesting to see how a start-up like Urban Harvest operates. I really liked the start-up vibe, a team that gets along well and if there are problems, fall back on each other.

As an intern, I immediately felt welcomed in the group. I felt like I belong in the Urban Harvest team, which gave me extra motivation to do a great internship. Furthermore, I really appreciated that they did not see us as interns but as part of their team, because of that I had the feeling that we had a lot of responsibility and flexibility.

➡️ What is your plan for after this internship?

After my internship, I will start University again, where I will work for my master’s thesis and for my courses. What I’m going to do after my master’s degree, is still a question that need to be answered. I already have some ideas about where I want to be in a year or two. Getting an additional master's degree is an option, I am considering different directions like environmental engineer, biomedical engineer. Moreover, an internship abroad also seems very interesting to me.

We want to thank her for the seamless way she collaborated with the Urban Harvest team. 🍓

Good luck, Joy!

🐝 Something worth buzzing about happened in our strawberry research cell this week. We received a new bumblebee hive from Biobest Group together with some beneficial insects for biological pest control.

The bumblebees have an important role in pollination: strawberries pollinated by bees are heavier, redder, and have a longer shelf life and a more desirable sugar-to-acid ratio than wind- or self-pollinated berries. The biological pest control kits boost sustainability and environmental protection by erasing the need for chemical pesticides.🐞

🔍 Did you spot the bumblebee preparing for a landing on Benjamin's sleeve?

Together with Biobest Group we are pushing towards outstandingly optimized strawberry growing systems, maintaining care for the environment and for our insect helpers. 👩🏻‍🔬🌱

As this year's Vertical Farming World Congress is still ongoing, we are reminiscing yesterday's thrill of having around 120 guests for a presentation and tour of the Urban Harvest hub. 🍓

We talked about how our innovation center developed into its current capacities and shared fine points about our solutions. We are grateful for everyone who participated and we will keep in touch to jointly advance knowledge and maximize the opportunities of controlled-environment agriculture.👩‍🔬🌱

This summer we were lucky to share our strawberry research with a few interns that we would like to present to you! From left to right on the picture, Manon, Clémence and Lavena. ☀️

Lavena Van Cranenbroeck is a master student of agronomics engineering at Gembloux and stayed with us for 8 weeks. She has set up and performed a shelf-life analysis on our strawberries. 🍓
Manon Boyart is a master student of biosystems technology at KU Leuven. She stayed with us for 6 weeks and focused on the water management system.💧
Clémence Doucet is a bachelor student of bio-science engineering at Louvain La Neuve. During her 5 week stay she supported Manon and Lavena with their projects.⚙️

We believe in and are proud of the benefits of such win-win internships and would like to thank our interns for their great work! We wish them all the best in their future professional endeavours!
