I am a small breeder of TLBAA registered Miniature Texas Longhorns. When I first started in this business a few short years ago I was unaware of Chondrodysplasia and what it means to the breed. I found that information was scarce on the subject within the breed, and as a result, I made some unwise buying decisions. After I learned of what Chondrodysplasia really is, and it’s possible effects, I made a promise to myself that I would never breed any animal that is a carrier of this lethal gene. As a result of this promise to myself, I have started my journey with small frame standard size longhorns, and not with any known miniature line. Every animal on my place has tested negative for Chondrodysplasia, and even though I am breeding Chondro free bulls to Chondro free cows, I still test every calf that is born on my ranch.
I have been breeding to two bulls that both meet the height requirements for miniatures and have been getting some very nice, mid sized, miniature calves. My goal is to raise healthy, high quality, Texas Longhorns in a miniature size, all while preserving the traits of the standard size Longhorn. I look for my cattle to be easy keepers and highly fertile, with the cows producing and raising a calf each year and the bulls eagerly covering his cows. It is my ultimate goal to have the size of the cattle I produce to get smaller and smaller by doing things the right way, and without the aid of a potentially lethal gene.
