Striving to find humane alternative to the abandoned pet rabbit cull of Granville island Vancouver
23/03/2024
Come attend!
We're a week away from our Easter Bunny Showcase at Granville Island!
Join us for a Rabbitat demonstration, viewing our sweetest buns in a model sanctuary. If you have questions about adoption, sanctuary rescue, or how to build your very own Rabbitat, this is the perfect event for you.
Sorry folks, no Meet n' Treat here (the buns need to rest up for Sunday!).
We will, however, have lots of fun Easter gifts for sale (bunny-themed ones, duh!), and a face painter on site to give you some celebratory whiskers.
Best of all, this event gives us a chance to connect with our Vancouver community and chat about our favorite topic in the whole world - BUNNIES! 🐰🩵
This event is free to everyone, located in the Kid's Market on Granville Island. Donations, of course, are always welcome, with 100% going towards our buns in need.
See you there!

Remember the bun we rescued a few months back from Jericho Beach? Her legs were all twisty from previous breaks. Well, look at her now! Just hanging with her gal pals. 🥹🥰
Lisa J is living it up with a colony of 10 female buns, including some Granville Island gals, Topaz from the Richmond auto mall , and our Bunny Cafe darlings - Miffy, Bubs, and Star.
Her legs remain permanently crooked, though the vet determined she isn't in any pain. She does, however, love to chill out in this perch where her legs can comfortably rest over the side.
The bunny girl gang of our dreams! 🐰🐰🐰

Donate to our Sick Bunny Fund - paypal.com/ca/fundraiser/charity/3764772 or rabbitats.org/donate or [email protected] for e-transfers.
UPDATE: Bunny is caught and safe, Aurelius Brown has her and is taking her to the shelter for Deanna's assessment and if she checks out okay, back to Abbotsford for the night. We still need to make sure s/he isn't a neighbourhood escapee so we're looking for a foster in the Chilliwack area while we check that out. Please ask around any community groups, etc.. Found in the 52000 block of Yale Road, Rosedale. There may also be a second bunny out there.
This poor bunny is in somebody's backyard in Rosedale just past Chilliwack. S/he hasn't moved much. Can anybody go help catch the poor thing before the cold snap?

Two more souls safe from the coyotes of Granville Island 💓

The latest Granville Island bunny, caught today. (Thanks Shari!) He's an unhappy juvenile boy. Sometimes you wish you could leave them out there to frolic in the park forever, but of course it won't be forever. It will only be until he's caught by a coyote, dog, hawk or lethal trapper. 💔 He doesn't understand this, but we will do our best to make sure he will happily live out his days in a natural environment with friends and family. ❤

Granville Island partners with rabbit rescue to rehome domestic animals abandoned in park. No rabbits euthanized. https://granvilleisland.com/news/granville-island-partners-with-rabbit-rescue

Our protest was a success! the company is full of lies but they won’t kill anymore bunnies
“I recieved this email about half an hour ago, regarding recently events at Granville Island:
"Hello X,
We would like to thank everyone for their time and interest in the rabbit situation on Granville Island and are pleased to announce we have partnered with a rabbit rescue to rehome domestic animals abandoned in our local park. An agreement with Rabbitats Rescue Society, a registered rabbit rescue, control & management non-profit, has been reached. No rabbits were euthanized.
As a reminder, a pair of domestic rabbits appeared in Ron Basford Park last winter, it is assumed a member of the public abandoned their pets, leaving them in the park. By the time Granville Island became aware of the rabbits, they had bred and grown to a large litter (s) and were attracting coyotes into the park.
As Ron Basford Park is heavily used by families and dog walkers, the arrival of the coyotes was a new and alarming development as there had been reports of aggressive coyote behavior in other local parks around Metro Vancouver. With thousands of visitors a day, and their safety utmost in mind, the goal was to prevent the coyote’s from settling on Granville Island, possibly endangering the public.
Granville Island reached out to licensed rabbit shelters, and discovered that abandoned, unneutered/un-spayed pet rabbits were a province-wide problem, and at the time there were no shelters available to take the rabbits. As the rabbits were now considered wildlife, the SPCA was also unable to assist with removing them.
With that, we made the difficult decision to consider having the rabbits professionally live-trapped, and, if there were no shelters who could take them, have them euthanized by a licenced veterinarian.
We appreciate the public’s engagement and support in finding alternative solutions to the overgrown rabbit population, and are pleased to announce that after live-trapping just a single rabbit, we have reached an agreement and partnership with the Rabbitats Rescue Society, a registered charity tasked with rabbit rescue, control & management, before having to resort to euthanizing the animals. Granville Island is supporting this initiative with assistance from staff, and a cash donation that will cover the cost of neutering, spaying, removing, and rehoming the rabbits from the Island and surrounding parks. Rabbitats will be looking for permanent homes for these, and other abandoned rabbits.
Granville Island has communicated this with the various organizations who have taken an interest in this initiative, including the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, who is responsible for the stewardship of provincial Crown land and natural resources, and protection of BC's archaeological and heritage resource; the Vancouver Humane Society, Animal Justice Canada, and the City of Vancouver.
We remind the public that simply dumping domestic animals in public parks is not a suitable solution to unwanted pets, is a criminal act under the Criminal Code of Canada, and an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The BC SPCA states it is opposed to the abandonment of domestic rabbits into the wild as this place a hardship on the animals. Please contact them for alternative solutions should you be in doubt."

Sadly, none of these bunlets survived. 🌈
FINAL UPDATE: RIP little babies. 🌈 Rescue can be so heartbreaking. 💔
UPDATE #2: Three of the four babies have sadly left us, but the fourth is expected to survive. Thanks to Petsville, Laura-Leah, Brittney, Deanna and Jenn for their efforts, and thanks to all for your support.
UPDATE: All four are still with us, they spent the day being assessed, cleaned up and treated at the vet (thank you Petsville Animal Hospital!), but they are still very sick little babies. Diagnostics have been difficult (eg: no poops to test) but whatever their issues (and they are probably multiple), they'll be needing a lot of supportive care (multiple meds, fluids, milk, heat, etc) and their prognosis is still guarded. They thank you for your thoughts, prayers and donations.

4 baby bunny survivors rescued from Granville island on a midnite emergency rescue mission as 1 black baby was reported as visibly ill and 5 total were sighted. We arrived and found one baby freshly passed away and 4 survivors hiding under ground
Volunteers crawled in the dirt to rescue these brave babies that survived the cull of Granville island

We did it!
Rabbitats has reached an agreement with Granville Island management to trap and contain the surviving loose rabbits (more on that later) but as always we need more space. Please spread the word!
We're also looking for more builders, labourers, and donations of building materials (wood, fencing, gutters, skylights, roadbase, etc) and of course cash. Thank you in advance! paypal.com/ca/fundraiser/charity/3764772 or rabbitats.org/donate.
