DCM is not specifically related to the lack of grains, it's due to the fillers they use in place of the grains to bring the cost down. Lentils, chickpeas, etc. I wish this explained better - dogs don't NEED grains, granted they're not much harm to most dogs, but the way most posts are worded it makes parents think it's the lack of grains causing the DCM.
Yesterday we had two wonderful Golden Retrievers, ages 6 and 2, come in for elective surgical procedures. Both dogs had a history of eating a well-known and popular grain free diet for several years. In one dog, an arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) was detected so an x-ray of his chest was taken. His heart was enlarged, so an echocardiogram was scheduled for that afternoon. An x-ray was also taken of the other dog's chest as a precaution, and his heart was also enlarged. He was able to get an echocardiogram same day, as well.
The reports on both dogs just came back, and both of these gorgeous, otherwise perfectly healthy dogs have Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The cardiologist suspects that in both cases it is related to their diet. Thankfully, this condition was caught early, and when fed a traditional diet, their condition should hopefully reverse. Their cases are being reported to the FDA, along with the thousands of others from across the country.
There is no evidence to support feeding grain-free. Most pet allergies are related to environment (pollens, etc) or protein sources. Grain allergies account for a tiny fraction of all food allergies in dogs. Unfortunately, many dogs are becoming very ill or even dying from eating so-called "BEG" diets (boutique, exotic, grain-free), and the terrible thing is nutritionally mediated dilated cardiomyopathy is 100% preventable. There have been zero reported cases of NMDCM in dogs eating foods that meet WSAVA guidelines, currently made by Purina, Hill's, Iams/Eukanuba, or Royal Canin. We strongly suggest if you are feeding a "BEG" diet that you change your dog over to one of the brands listed above. If you have any questions specifically related to your pet, please call us.
We are so hopeful we caught this disease in time for our two beautiful patients to reverse their disease. Their very caring and dedicated owners have already changed their diet to one that meets WSAVA criteria. Don't worry, our animal care is spectacular so there won't be any problems if they stay! If Athena doesn't find her furever π‘ before I get home from vacation then I'll take it as a sign she's staying, which I won't be mad about LOL.

Sorry we haven't posted much this last week after announcing that we added 5 new "breeders".. it's been a whole ordeal with these poor babies this past week. These poor babies have lived their entire lives in kennels outdoors. They're TERRIFIED of everything, and this is not the usual fear associated with rehoming an older dog. These dogs shake in fear, tremor when they receive pets, don't want treats, etc. Just look at Poppy shaking in fear in the video just because we was NEAR her. Thankfully were making progress (video was day 1)! Everyone except for Brody, the male, have to be on leashes which is taking HOURS everyday because they're so scared of human touch that it's hard to catch them and we don't want to chase them which can result in more fear. They're all finally eating after finding the right combo of toppers for their food, and starting to show more signs of trusting us - Moxie finally rolled over for a belly rub today which is HUGE. To top it off, Brody was sold with full AKC to us for BREEDING. Brody has severe CDA (color dilution alopecia) which as most of y'all know, we will not breed that into our program. We didn't notice at pickup as he was peeing everywhere so she put him in the crate so I wouldn't get peed on (big red flag - he was peeing in FEAR). I noticed the moment we got home, the worst part is we talked about this before I got him about how we have been working for years to breed dilutes without CDA, and when I brought this to her attention, her response was "Well no one has cared." It's not the buyer job to care, it's the breeders job to not breed it into their program!! Brody's neuter will be scheduled for mid Oct, and we don't know when we will be able to place him in a pet home. I won't place him until I feel he is emotionally ready. He's made amazing progress, but it'll still take time before we're ready. This week has been time consuming & emotionally draining for us to see how these dogs previous life has traumati

Roxie had her x-ray this morning, then had her pups this evening. π₯° She had 4 babies --- 1 black & tan piebald female (Sassy), 2 black and tan females (Sammy & Stella), and 1 black & tan dapple piebald male (Soldier). Most likely smooth coats, but possibility of long hairs. Her male was born with a ruptured umbilical hernia and thankfully we caught it prior to Roxie doing any damage to the intestines. He underwent after hours surgery to get the intestines back in and sewed up. We will be bottle feeding him indefinitely, hopefully he can go back with his litter in 7-14 days. He is not out of woods, by no means. If he makes it through the night, we stand a chance πππ this little fighter has earned the name, Soldier. Video is of the little guy during his first feeding.
