*SHELTER PLEA* Cat | HANDSOME BOY TRIXIE IS HAVING THE WORST TIME AFTER BEING SURRENDERED DUE TO HIS OWNER MOVING AWAY :( PLAYFUL AND LOTS OF ENERGY IN HIS HOME . GET THIS SWEET BOY A NEW FAMILY TO GROW OLD WITH. WATCH VIDEO - https://youtu.be/eIlhT4qCggM 91+ Days in shelter!

Cute Tabby Boy TRIXIE Is Opening Up After Graduating from the Fraidy Cat Club! Client came to BACC to surrender his daughter's cat, Trixie. His daughter had moved away and left her cat.

Trixie is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Please check here for updated adoption hours.
What my friends at ACC say about me:
I would do best in a home with only adult humans.
I am looking for a home with a patient person.
I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.
I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home.
I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

TRIXIE 181791

2Y | Male | 8lbs | O/S

Hello, my name is Trixie. My animal id is #181791. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/7/2023, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- kids not caring for animal.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/12/23
1- Crouched down on top of den, tense body, wide eyes, ears flattened. Growls upon approach, hisses when opening the door. May stop growling in 10 seconds, so I begin to close the door, but then she continues to growl. I wait until she stops again in another 10 seconds, she tilts her ears to the side/forward, lip licks, slow blinks, and then I slowly close the door at the end.
2- Still crouched down at the top of the den with a tense body and wide eyes. Low growl upon approach but she started to slow blink. Hissed when I made eye contact but then body and eyes softened when I looked away. Waited 10 seconds until she remained calm and started to slow blink again, I then slowly closed the door.
3- Same spot, growls when approaching with treats on the scratcher tool then hisses and then swats hard. Steps back hunched over with pilo erect fur, continues to growl with ears flat and eyes wide. Occasionally stops growling to lip lick and when I mark and slowly pull the tool away, she growls again. Repeat a few times of growling and stopping to lip lick, slowly begins to calm her body and ears. Transitions to low grumble when I give her space at end of interaction.

9/17/23
Hiding in cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She grumbles very low when spoken to and I remove myself when she stops growling through her den. I repeat this 3x and I leave some treats on the opposite side of her kennel in case she wants to explore later.

9/20/23
Sitting inside his den with his tense face visible in the opening with eyes wide and dilated, body low, and ears tilted as he hisses and low growls. I speak softly and slow blink waiting for him to stop growling or slow blink back at me. He slow blinks a few times and I mark this behavior before walking away. I repeat this 2 more times while working in the room.

9/24/23
Hiding in cat den upon approach, only the very edge of his ear is visible sticking out from his den opening. He hisses and grumbles from within his den and I remove myself each time he takes a break between the growls and hisses and there's silence. I repeat this 3 x.

9/26/23
Hunched in back of kennel, body and face tense and ears completely flattened from the side. He hisses and growls when I lift the cage cover. I remove myself when he stops growling and hissing for a moment or when he slow-blinks. I repeat this 3 x.

10/01/23
Trixie is poking his head out of his den as I approach and he watches me lift the cage cover with flat ears and a tense face. He grumbles and maintains eye contact with me and I leave his presence after marking the behavior with a "good boy" each time he stops grumbling. I repeat this 3 times and I also notice that he's eaten the treats I left in his kennel from earlier! He has been out of his den more often and he will sometimes slow-blink and will appear more calm than during previous days.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Playful,Independent,Bold,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,New home adjustment period,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: It is difficult to predict if Trixie will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Feline behavior staff have started clicker training him with dry treats when he displays calm behavior and tolerates brief petting on the head.

Trixie prefers to eat dry treats placed or tossed in front of him. He may sniff puree treats but does not accept the puree from the scratcher tool or tube. We recommend using dry treats to coax him into a carrier or den or through the portal door when transport is necessary.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Trixie is a shy, timid, and independent cat whose behavior has improved since the previous evaluation; although he continues to display signs of fear, he resorts to defensive behaviors to protect himself when he feels cornered instead of offensive behaviors to appear intimidating and directly face off a threat. He used to immediately hiss and growl upon approach, hide in his den, and swat with force and his claws out when staff reached close to him, but now he is usually found perching on top of the den, leans his head forward to sniff and accept treats offered, and may respectfully swat with his claws in.

Trixie was sitting up at the front of the kennel with a tense body and wide eyes upon approach and then steps back when spoken to and opening the door. He curiously sniffs and accepts treats offered on the scratcher tool placed in front of him and then he climbs on top of the den crouched down with his tail wrapped around his body. Trixie continues to accept more treats and allows brief petting on his head while eating with his head low and ears tilted and flattened. When reaching close to offer more treats, Trixie begins growling and bats the tool, then keeping his paw raised. The assessor keeps the tool still until he stops. After slowly pulling the tool away, Trixie calmly climbs down the den and continues to accept more treats and gentle petting on the head.

Trixie has shown the potential to warm up here in our shelter, specifically by transitioning from the 'fraidy cat program to positive reinforcement. Although Trixie was showing promise, he appears to now be deteriorating. These behaviors were likely exasperated after his DOH-hold when he had to spend time in medical which is a new environment.

Trixie was hunched on top of his cat den as the assessor approached, body and face tense, ears forward, eyes bright and alert and tail curled around feet. Trixie made eye contact when spoken to and began vocalizing. Trixie watched the kennel door as it opened and he tolerated touch on the head with the assessor's hand breifly before turning his head to bite it. As the assessor is pulling the hand away from Trixie he reaches out towards it, grabs it with claws extended and pulls it back towards him to give it another swat. Pick up was not attempted at this time.

Trixie displayed similar behaviors during his re-assessment.

Trixie is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat / scratch / bite and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.

****PLEDGE INFO ****

How does pledging work?

Pledging is a promise to pay for a particular animal in need. You can pledge any amount you like - every bit helps. Rescues depend on donations to help animals in their care with medical issues so your dollars support their ability to help ACC animals every day. Some of these animals end up with massive medical bills.

Why should you pledge?

A rescue may take notice to a particular cat with medical needs if there is rallied support around it. Due to the amount of sick animals coming from the ACC it is difficult to prioritize at times who they can help and who they cannot with massive veterinary bills. You should pledge because your dollar DOES COUNT to that animal!!!

How do you pledge?

To pledge you simply click on the animal's thread and go to their ORIGINAL THREAD in the album (not on our wall). You make a comment with your amount pledged - such as "$5" - and take note of the animal's location, A #, At Risk list date, and what you pledged.

When do you pay your pledges?

When the animal is updated as SAFE and in rescue, we will update the thread with the info we receive from them once we confirm the animal is indeed "SAFE". This may take a few days based on their schedule and the ACC's schedule. You can always bookmark the animal's thread to watch its status.

We handle the status of hundreds of cats on a daily basis so it is very hard for us to look up every cat you have pledged or watched. Please be proactive and bookmark or watch the albums so we can continue to focus on helping save lives.

* PLEASE NOTE * KITTENS under the age of 8 weeks or weighing 2 pounds or less CAN ONLY be PULLED by a RESCUE!!!! IF INTERESTED, PLEASE contact a RESCUE ASAP!!!
