Stacie's Urban Dogs Stacie's Urban Dogs is about nutrition consulting, canine knowledge, behavioral consulting, coaching, and rescue work. Stacie currently has four dogs………………..

My mission is to educate dog owners then teach the dog! Stacie has been a dog lover her entire life. She has been surrounded by canines from the week she was born and chose to dedicate her life to caring and raising not only her own dogs but rescue dogs, street dogs, and also those that want to ensure their own canine family is properly cared for. Her rescue dogs have come from Mexico, Phuket, Chi

ang Mai, Northern Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta. Additionally in her limited spare time, Stacie is an advocate for humane treatment for all kinds of animals, elimination of puppy mills; dog fighting, homeless dogs, fear based dog training, the development of international animal abuse registries, elimination of the horrific dog meat trade and stronger penalties are legislated for animal cruelty. Stacie also supports natural and organic dog food and supplements. Stacie fostered five street dogs in Manzanillo, Mexico and is a volunteer who raises funds through K9 Aid International for various rescue organizations. And she has volunteered for Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue and Friends of Mexican Animal Welfare. that story continues. My goal is dedicated to making life easier for dogs and dog owners. Our work will provide a high level of service quality with regard to compassion, safety, reliability, comfort, thoroughness, fun and courtesy. I feel privileged that my clients entrust their dog to our care and show our appreciation through the services that we provide. I participate in ongoing education courses designed to enhance knowledge of professional dog care services and behavior. My philosophy is to respect and understand your dog, to make the commitment for time to play, to learn and stimulate your dog's mind. I only support and encourage positive, choice based training for your canine family. Certified Canine Behavior Coach ( positive and choice based training)

Exactly! And reaching out and patting the dog on the head is just as bad!

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

The rainy season is coming in less than two months and we have only one donation so far for Askal Animal Rescue. We only need $300 to $400 more to finish and add roof. We do not want to see these dogs out in the Typhoon season, they deserve shelter. thank you.

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for dog fighting.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

I have been MIA on my fb page for awhile so I am catching up today with a few posts :)
A few days ago a lady was telling me she sent her dog away to boot camp for canines and her dog came back better behaved but quite fearful. I asked a bunch of questions like, did the place have cameras so you could watch from home, what were the living conditions like for the dogs, program methodology, socialization etc. The basic answer was she did not know, it was just recommended to her, and she dropped her dog off for five days. omg
Long story short her dog had experienced fear based training, with choke chain collars. I did my research. I am recommending the following to anyone who is taking their dog to a leadership training class (not obedience, we do not call it that anymore), or to a "boot" camp for canines to keep in mind the following:
1. Your dog misbehaves because of you the owner, you need to be educated so you can train your dog properly for basic manners, for direction.
2. These camps are not recommended for fear and aggression issues. And sending a dog away with these issues will certainly not teach you how to manage your dog at home.
3. Depending upon the program it could make your dog much worse. Most aggression is fear based so if the trainer is using punishment( choke, prong and shock collars and physical force), this just makes it worse for a dog that is already afraid. You are best to have a well season behaviourist work with you and your dog.
4. The dog training industry is not regulated (it should be), Anyone can call themselves a trainer (and many do), so it is up to the dog owner to w**d out the qualified people from the not qualified people. Some sites say things like "oh I grew up with dogs, I am a dog whisperer, I know what I am doing when it comes to dogs, and fear based training is still very popular, to "control" your dog.
5. Research and educate yourself about positive reinforcement and choice based training that is safe and healthy for your dog. Teaching your dog takes time, patience and more patience, repetition daily. If you cannot provide that for your dog, then you cannot blame your dog for misbehaving and maybe you should not have a dog.
6. Make sure your trainer can show proof of training and education and from where. There are dog trainers and canine behaviourists. Some people are trained and educated in both, not everyone. If your dog has fear based aggression I think you would want some knowledgeable with hands on training with a Certified Trainer and they are also Certified and well experienced working with aggression. What are their credentials?
7. Some breeders say they are trainers, great! But again check to see what kind of training.
8. If the methods do not follow humane, positive, modern, science based methods...….. Stay Clear!
9. If your dog is boarding ask how much time the dog will get outside of kennel to exercise, play with other dogs.
10. When picking a dog up from a camp, make sure you get lessons to transfer behaviours to you. It is not going to do you any good at all, if your dog only listens to the trainer. You have to maintain their training or it won't work, and both of you will get frustrated!! Choose wisely for your dog!!

Dog Parks - Yes? No? They work for some people but not everyone. Unfortunately they are not regulated. They are not like public dog parks that are well fenced in, and staffed, and clean. Dog owners have to watch their dogs vigilantly. Many of the public dog parks have owners who take their dogs to play but spend their time visiting other dog owners over coffee. I understand the reason for dog parks especially for single dog homes. Dogs are not screened for temperament nor are they monitored or have someone to ask unruly dogs to leave. Unbeknownst to some dog owners, their dog is fearful, bullied, some skirmishes and outright full fights. Even a dog who has never had issues with other dogs can develop fear based reactivity after a single incident. Some dog owners will say, "not my dog, hasn't happened to mine", well not yet anyway. And when one aggressive episode happens, the whole energy changes in the park. It is just important to be an advocate for your dog, attend the dog park in the safest way possible or have play dates with other dogs!
With the current respiratory illness going around dogs usually have coughing, sneezing, eye or nose discharge, are abnormally tired, and do not test positive for any common causes of canine respiratory illness, public dog parks are not the best place to take your dog, followed by doggie day care and doggie boarding.
