Gulliver is absolutely the most fearful horse we’ve ever taken into the rescue. Months of consistent handling has still left this very large boy terrified of humans. One of his eyes has been getting medicated and that isn’t helping with his feelings of us but both parts are necessary right now. Maybe one day we’ll have property and he can be turned out and only minimally handed-this is probably the most ethical option for him. But with his eye a major concern, unfortunately he has to be around us a bit longer. Thanks to Shelby for being a new human to introduce to him whose only task this day was to “touch and feed”.

Is anyone driving from SV to Tucson tomorrow, Saturday, to transport a small bag of supplies to benefit this boy?

“I really feel like we’re going to get in there and find something we can do something about and make him a lot better” Dr. Riensche

I won’t lie and say that we were optimistic going to Gilbert with Dixon but we promise these animals that we will try for them, and we do. Dixon is a very sick dog who has been sick for a long time but we promised. We have had this specialty appointment for weeks and since he’s been with us we have just been trying to keep him with us until the internal specialist could see him because our vets are stumped!

Dixon got an ultrasound, bloodwork sent off to , and a red blood cell count yesterday and THIS is how we help them. Want to hear something extra cool? His red blood cell volume yesterday was 34. Prior to his blood transfusion he was at 22%. Normal is 37-55% and he is making progress towards that now! He has a long road ahead but I will borrow Dr.Rs confidence.

Until his labs come back from Texas A&M, we were told not to change anything and that includes his diet of prescription A/D cans. Dixon is currently eating 2-5 cans a day and we could really use some more. If you would like to buy a case of A/D for Dixon you can call one of our local vet clinics and pay directly and we can pick up for him🍽️ a case of 24 cans is $63.45. I’ll include their contact below.

Another medical emergency! I was going about my “usual”morning, p**p scooping, cleaning, doing water buckets the usual and as I’m walking my loop to p**p scoop, I saw Mocho laying on the ground, stiff and unresponsive. He was purple, not breathing and I could not feel a heart beat. I started CPR trying to resuscitate him. I believe he was choking and I froze for a few seconds not knowing what to do. It seemed like forever but I was getting a few agonal breath. For me seeing agonal breathing usually means that they are on their way out, not coming back. It took a few minutes but he started to breathe on his own. I am so grateful for Dr. Monica returning my phone call and helping me navigate this emergency. This happened a few days ago and he was seen by Dr. Monica and we took x-rays to roll out a broken back. He was not able to walk initially or really sit but has made progress and started walking. I do believe that there was lack of oxygen to his brain, which we will need help with and that is why the appointment tomorrow with Dr. Alcott who is an amazing neurologist. I’m not sure that he is visual but he is walking, eating/drinking and he recognizes his name when I call him. We are grateful for any help with his care whether that’s donating or sharing ❤️

Even though Chicken on the right was not quite sure about this setup we ended up having a wonderful introduction between Sam and Chicken 🍀 Sam is a pro at meeting other feather friends Chicken on the other hand has never seen another bird until she came to us and we are very happy on how it went.

A big thank you to for this beautiful Java wood stand that helped us make this introduction flawlessly ❤️

YOU GUYS!!! WE did it!!
We had Dixons exam and diagnostics covered yesterday ☀️ we will elaborate on yesterdayS exam a little bit later, but he’s very much not out of the woods yet and potentially has to have a surgery ahead of him. The doctor who is so wonderful seemed confident that he can pull through this and ultimately be healthy enough to find his very own people 🌻

The plan initially was for me Annette to go up to Gilbert but I have two more critical cases here and did not want to be gone for the day so Sandy volunteered to go and had to rearrange her day and tap in a couple of people to make it happen.

Thank you Danny, Pat, Brand and Keen for your help and patience yesterday. Sandy ended up not coming home until late and did not make our normal transport time for Dixon to come back to Hereford so he still needs a ride ASAP from Tucson to Hereford. So if anybody is coming this way and you could give Dixon a ride please pm.

Thank you everybody that is supporting Dixon‘s journey! You guys are amazing and as always

I volunteered to take little Dixon to the speciality center today to see an internal specialist. We see a LOT of different specialists across the state with the animals in the rescue so I lose track of where I’ve been and who I’ve seen until I walked into room 2 at Desert Veterinary Specialty Center in Gilbert and realized that that was the room I was in with Mila 2 years ago. I’m so happy that I got to see Dr. R again to thank her for helping improve Milas quality of life by recommending a different medication. She never judged Mila by her stack of veterinary records-only treated the dog in front of her. I think she’ll give Dixon the same chance. I didn’t plan on being sad today but here we are.

Did you know that we solely exist from donations and adoption fees? Please consider skipping your this morning and instead help us save Dixon! I know that it’s hard to support an animal that doesn’t look like he can be saved, but he deserves for us to find out whether or not we can help him before euthanizing.

Come on a little adventure with me this morning on a typical email thread. Animal rescue means a lot of work with animals, but it also means a lot of interactions with humans.

Well chosen and trained Service animals are an invaluable part of a disabled person’s life. Very few of the animals that come through our organization would make confident service animals, regardless of the task needed, because our organization does not rescue an animal based on their ability to help a person. Some may, and that’s an incredible mission statement, just not ours. We will always recommend that people looking for a service animal go through a service animal organization for the best possible outcome for both the animal and adopter.

All of that being said, I’m also not in the mood to deal with rude people. Dennis can be rude elsewhere because he was blocked 🤷‍♀️

Have the day you deserve✌️

Milo is so so sick. Saying that he has diarrhea just does not adequately describe what is happening with him. His body is just leaking f***l matter and blood. On his freedom ride from the shelter, p**p was just dripping past 2 diapers. All diagnostics so far are inconclusive. The previous vet thinks he has EPI and that is how he is currently being treated but our current vet isn’t sure so we took a new set of X-rays and we still have no answers. His skin and coat show a malnourished dog leading us to believe this has been going on for quite some time. He has Pica currently and will eat anything, including non food items, so he has to be kenneled when not directly supervised. I cannot imagine how horrible he feels.

Working with our community means working with local law-enforcement agencies to help the animals of our community. We got a phone call from the Marshals office in Tombstone Arizona asking if we could help with a rabbit. One owner had recently passed away, and the other was hospitalized and would no longer be in a position to care for pets. Family members could take the cats, but no one could take the rabbit. After all other local animal organizations said they could not take him, we said yes. This Tombstone Marshall was able to call the owner and let her know that her rabbit was safe and that’s all that I would want if I were in her position.

This little bunny is seven years old, so he is a special golden boy. Did you know that the average rabbit in America only lives to be a year and a half? We have three things that are essential to the senior rabbits in our care and they are in our Amazon wish list linked below and in the comments🐰🥕

We don’t always share the behind-the-scenes of Rescue because often times it disturbs people so much that they won’t follow the success stories or even worse It creates fights rather than solutions. Those of you who follow us are the good ones and we’re so happy to have you in our corner but in Rescue, we also deal with the other kind of pet owners. The ones who decide to euthanize their pet when they leave town and the ones who let their animals rot in their homes rather than getting the medical care that the animal should be entitled to. With yesterday‘s post on the great Dane causing so much concern I thought that today could be a good way for me to explain how Little Lotus Rescue works a bit.

We work primarily with municipal animal shelters, meaning those shelters that are run by counties and cities . Here in southern Arizona. It is not uncommon for our local animal shelter to hit a census of 1000 animals in their care. Not all of those animals are healthy and ready to be adopted, Meaning they take up kennel space for significantly longer than a healthy animal would. something that we try to do as often as possible is take these ill and injured animals that would take up valuable kennel space in a shelter And rehabilitate them in our rescue. When we do this, we are not only saving the life of that critical medical animal, but we are saving the lives of numerous animals that will then cycle through the kennel Space that the sick animal would have been holding up at the shelter.

Milo is a perfect example of that. We saw Milo popping up on the shelters “foster” email for weeks. People would go to see him and they would see that his kennel was always full of explosive diarrhea and they would say no to him.. He was finally placed on a euthanasia deadline because of his medical concerns and that is when we stepped in. we are so far beyond capacity but what do you say to a dog like this? Whose only fault is that he hasn’t received the medical care that he has deserved for a very long time. His medical issues are not sudden his body shows a very long time of very clear neglect. Milo is not going to be a quick rehabilitation or an easy one and with the sh*tty winter that we have had we need your help. Milo is the reason we do what we do and he needs your help. Going to get Milo is how we found Millie. While we could not save Millie from the neglect of her previous owners, we are hoping that we can give Milo a different future.

The easiest ways to donate are listed below, and we will make sure fundraisers are linked on this post.

Urgent courtesy post‼️

UPDATE: Owner says that they are surrendering to the Sierra Vista Animal Shelter. If you are interested in meeting him hopefully he will be admitted today.

This very sweet boy is an eight-year-old intact male that is scheduled today in Sierra Vista for euthanasia. They have been unsuccessful finding him a home and now they are going out of town so today is his last day. I was told reason for not being able to find a home is because he is intact and is very excited about meeting female dogs.

We are not able to take him as we had another medical emergency that we will post about later on but right now we are trying to prevent this boy from being euthanized. Please PM and I will forward you contact information.
