It's Indiana University Football Time again! Tomorrow is the first of 8 home football games that the CanINE Express, Feral Cat Friends, and Indigo's Rescue Ranch and Sanctuary will have our concession stand at IU's Football Stadium. If you're coming to the game or have friends or relatives who will be attending, ask them stop by the East 4 Concession Stand to buy their beverages (including beer!) and snacks! We will be receiving 10% of our total sales, plus tips! 100% of the commission that we earn goes to the animals served by all three 501c3 organizations. It's hard work and a long day, but last year we sold $92K in 6 games!

Thanks so much to Indiana University and our volunteers!!! We couldn't do this without you!

These are 3 of the 14 adorable dogs who were transported today from Orange County Humane Society (Paoli, IN) and Switzerland County Animal Shelter (Florence, IN) to our CanINE Express Transport Project receiving shelters -- the Humane Society of Hobart (Hobart, IN) and Second City Canine Rescue (Palatine, IL). Many, many thanks to the shelter staff and volunteers for the hard work they do each and every day for animals in their care!

Yesterday, it was a great day for a transport to Berea Animal Rescue Friends outside of Cleveland! We transported 19 cats and 5 dogs from Switzerland County Animal Shelter and Animal Care Alliance-Richmond, two shelters that are overflowing with cats and dogs. Taco (photo taken at Switzerland County Animal Shelter a few days before the transport) is one of the dogs who was transported to Berea ARF. Such lucky pups and cats to have the opportunity to change their venue which will result in their "going home" very soon!

Yesterday, the CanINE Express hit the road with a litter of 7 puppies from Indigo's Rescue Ranch in Jackson County, Indiana and Lucy, 3 year old mother with 7 puppies, from Orange County Humane Society. They were transported to two of our northern Indiana receiving shelter partners ... Humane Indiana-Munster and the Humane Society of Hobart. An amazing foster for the Humane Society of Hobart took Lucy and her pups --- such a great place the foster has for moms and their puppies! Thank you so much to our sending and receiving shelters for working together to help these pups and Lucy "go home."

Yesterday, we transported 7 year old, 14 # Bogie from over-crowded Orange County Humane Society in Paoli, Indiana to Second City Canine Rescue in Palatine, Illinois where he went to his foster home. We travelled through pounding rain in the Chicago area to get Bogie there, but it was so worth it to get this little man where he will be in a home instead of a kennel!

I am very grateful to everyone who donated to help Feral Cat Friends meet the match required for the United Spay Alliance grant! Just since January, Theresa Block and her team of volunteers have trapped and altered 196 feral cats preventing hundreds of kittens from being born. If the grant is funded, Theresa will be able to continue this wonderful and much needed work in Monroe, Lawrence, Owen, and Green counties in south central Indiana. Again, thanks so all of you who made this happen! Team work is dream work!

SPECIAL REQUEST: I am always grateful when I post a shelter dog in need of medical care and so many of you donate! All of us together have been able to help so many dogs get the care they need. This time, I’m not asking for money, but for someone who can offer Celci their home for a couple of days while his foster mom, Julie, will be away. The first time is for 3 days: Tuesday, March 26 through Thursday, March 28; Celcil would return home to the foster Mom on Friday, March 29. The second time is for 10 days: Tuesday, April 9 through Thursday, April 18.

Celci is a 10 year old gentle, housetrained boy who has been under the care of Animal Dermatology Center-Louisville (Ky) for severe skin issues. Celci’s foster Mom, Julie, has been going above and beyond for this boy by administering medicines several times a day and giving Celci medicated bathes 3 times a week. She’s helped Celci go from a dog who was constantly scratching, red and hairless in several areas of his body, to one whose skin is a soft pink and hair is coming back. Julie says that Celci is extremely well-behaved and adjusted quickly to her home. Give him his toys and he entertains himself. At Indigo’s Rescue Ranch, Celci got along very well with other dogs. Since Indigo’s is an all-dog rescue, it’s not known how he would do around cats.

If you can foster Celci for the 3-day and/or 10-day period, please let me know as soon as possible (812-720-0005 cell/text messages; email: [email protected]) and I can provide you with additional information. Food, toys, and medicine will be provided and I can drop off and pick up Celci from your home. PS. Celci is also available for adoption! Please spread this message to your friends and family so we can keep Celci in a home for these short periods while his foster Mom is away! The home environment vs. being in the shelter is essential for Celci’s continued dermatology progress!

Yesterday - before the storms moved in today -- was sunny and warm as the CanINE Express travelled north to the Humane Society of Hobart with cats and dogs from our south central Indiana shelter partners. The 3 female German Shepherd pups (5 months old and 50 #) in the video were happy to unload from the transport van to meet staff and volunteers who made them feel very welcomed!

Busy two transport days --- Many thanks to Becky Meyer for driving 22 cats and 3 dogs to Berea Animal Rescue Friends near Cleveland yesterday. Today, Linda Lawson was my shot gun buddy as we drove 18 cats and 8 dogs to Hobart Humane Society and Humane Indiana in northwest Indiana. Thanks so much to our receiving shelter partners for helping our sending shelter partners in south central Indiana gain very valuable kennel space! And, by changing the venue helps these cats and dogs "go home"!

TIME TO SQUASH Indiana House Bill 1412. In response to local ordinances prohibiting the sale of puppy mill puppies in retail outlets, pet stores, and their lobbyists are going state-to-state, asking law makers to pass preemption bills that would prohibit local control of puppy-selling pet stores. This national effort is driven by Petland -- an extremely controversial pet store corporation.

If passed, House Bill 1412 would:
* Prohibit a county, municipality, or township from restricting the sale of puppies in pet stores and would void 21 local ordinances across Indiana (such as Bloomington, Indianapolis and several other towns across our state), robbing local elected officials of their ability to protect consumers and manage pet overpopulation.

* Require the Indiana Board of Animal Health (BOAH) to oversee pet stores, shelters, and rescues. Without any additional funding, BOAH would be expected to regulate hundreds of additional entities.

* Penalize already overwhelmed animal shelters and rescues if they don't register with BOAH without any justification for this oversight that was drafted by pet stores.

* Place largely meaningless regulations on puppy-selling pet stores, allowing known bad actors to continue with business as usual.

Please call your Indiana representative to urge them to vote "no" on House Bill 1412. Tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. is the first hearing of the bill in the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. The members include:

Rep. Mike Aylesworth (Chair) [email protected]

Rep. Beau Baird (Vice Chair) [email protected]

Rep. Dr. Brad Barrett [email protected]

Rep. Bob Cherry [email protected]

Rep. Rob Greene [email protected]

Rep. Dave Heine [email protected]

Rep. J.D. Prescott [email protected]

Rep. Craig Snow [email protected]

Rep. Lorissa Sweet [email protected]

Rep. Maureen Bauer [email protected]

Rep. John Bartlett [email protected]

Rep. Sheila Klinker [email protected]

Rep. Justin Moed [email protected]

If any of these representatives represent your county, please call or send them an email message asking them to vote "No" on House Bill 412. Thank you!!!

IMPORTANT: Prevent the hunting and trapping of bobcats. Call your Indiana legislator to oppose this bill ASAP! The first Senate committee will review this bill on January 18. Let's all call and stop it from moving out of the committee!

A bill, Senate Bill 241, has been introduced in the Indiana legislature that would subject the state’s bobcats to barbaric practices, including capture in painful steel-jaw leghold traps, which can cause severe injuries such as cut tendons and ligaments. Trapped animals can break their bones and teeth —or even chew off their own limbs—in their desperate struggle to escape, and may be left to languish in pain and fear for as long as 24 hours in extreme conditions until the trapper returns to kill them by bludgeoning, strangling or shooting. Establishing a trophy hunting and commercial trapping season will result in pain and suffering for Indiana’s bobcats, as well as family pets and non-target wildlife.

Nobody kills bobcats for food; opening a hunting and trapping season would serve only as an opportunity for a few individuals to make a personal profit by selling pelts or obtain a trophy.

TAKE ACTION and SHARE THIS MESSAGE WITH YOUR INDIANA FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Please send a message to your state legislators urging them to oppose Senate Bill 241 to open a bobcat trophy hunting and trapping season. It’s important that we all respond to stop this bill from passing into law.

On the road today with my sister, Liz, riding back to her home in Tulsa, OK. We have a very special passenger, Ullie, a 5-year old Australian Shepherd, who we’re driving to meet his new family … they are coming up from their home in Ft. Hood, Texas to meet us in Tulsa. Ullie has lived with his human Mom in Bloomington (IN) since he was a pup and she is having to rehome Ullie because of a very serious illness. Thank goodness, the family in Texas are very good friends of the woman and they know Ullie well. I’m so very sorry for the woman and Ullie, but I know it’s a comfort for her knowing that Ullie will be with her good friends. Riding with Ullie today makes me so grateful for good health and the kindness of people, like Ullie’s new family.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated to BB's FB appeal. We now have enough money to pay for her ultrasound and chest x-rays to be done on Thursday, January 11 at Indy Vet Speciality and Emergency Hospital in Indianapolis. I'll keep you informed of the test results. I am so grateful for your donations!

Positive thoughts for BB!

It's hard to believe that today begins the 20th year of the CanINE Express Transport Project transport -- our first transport to New England was December 4, 2004. Thank you so much to all the Indiana sending shelter partners who have prepped thousands of dogs and cats going on transport each month. Also, I'm so grateful to our receiving shelter partners in New England, Cleveland, the Chicagoland area, northwestern Illinois, and northern Indiana who have accepted 12,673 Indiana shelter dogs and 1,504 shelter cats from our transport and found them adoptive homes! A huge thank you to all our volunteer drivers who in the first 17 years of the project drove a 2,100 mile roundtrip transport (Indiana to New England) each month. Kudos to our terrific webmaster, Matt McIntosh, who makes it possible for our receiving shelters to select the Indiana shelters cats and dogs they would like each transport. And, many, many thanks to all the financial supporters of the CanINE Express who over the years keep our wheels running. This Project could not have happened without the dedicated work of hundreds of people. I am forever grateful to all of you!

Brazilian priest Juan Pablo takes abandoned dogs off the streets, and feeds and bathes them. Then he introduces a dog to each Mass and to find each one a home. Dozens of stray dogs have families because of this man. We hope this idea catches on. God bless you father😇🤗

Our Story

The mission of the CanINE (Indiana to New England) Express Transport Project is to promote coordination and foster team work between Canine Express sending and receiving shelter partners in order to transport as many Hoosier canines as possible to loving adoptive homes -- until which time Indiana legislation adopts spay/neuter legislation that will drastically reduce the euthanasia rate and bring us to a "no-kill for space" state. You can "virtually" ride the CanINE Express by clicking on this youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VLw74gRnG

This interstate project, that began with its maiden voyage in December 2004 and currently has more than 30 partner shelters, has successfully transported 11,418 Indiana shelter dogs and 351 shelter cats. A benefit that wasn’t visualized at the project’s beginning is that our partners have shared best sheltering practices including spay/neuter education, medical care, promoting adoptions, increasing volunteerism, and political activism to build and grow state legislation related to animal issues.

Our project does not transport Indiana shelter dogs to private adopters; only to our receiving shelter partners in Cleveland, northwest Illinois and Indiana, and the Northeast.
