Westie Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic States, Inc. ["Westie Rescue Mid-Atlantic"], a member of the Humane Society of the United States is an all volunteer 501-3c, not-for-profit organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The organization is dedicated to assisting West Highland White Terriers needing rescue from neglect or abuse or assistance in finding new homes. We primarily cover the

Greater Washington DC area, including Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and the District of Columbia, parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We also support or participate in rescue efforts elsewhere in the United States. Our volunteers have been involved in rescue over 10 years and, during that time, have taken in and placed hundreds of Westies. Westie Rescue Mid-Atlantic operates totally on donations from the public, which go only to pay the expenses [including medical care] of the dogs and administrative costs of finding potential adoptive homes and record keeping. There is no full-time staff. Volunteers receive no compensation except for receipts of out of pocket expenses directly related to rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of Westies in the program. Each year, we place 40-60 Westies. Some are in excellent health; some are far from it. Although most are around 5 years old, the ages of the dogs range from 8 weeks to 11 years.

Westie Rescue Mid-Atlantic Region would like to announce that Westies will be marching in the Ballyshaners St. Patrick's Parade through the streets of Alexandria, VA on March 1, 2025. All Westies are here by instructed to inform their owners to get some greenery outfits: collars, dresses, jackets, and even some fancy duds and be ready to assemble in old town Alexandria at a new location as this will be the first time Westies will be in the parade.

Westies will assemble their owners at the Staging Area (location cross streets to be announced shortly) at 11 am. The normal parade rules apply: No items to be tossed to the crowds, so pick up after your dog. Also, no biting or fighting with the crowds of children along the parade route allowed.

Wagons for geezers allowed.

Parade Formation: The 2025 Parade route, extends eastward along King Street, from St. Asaph Street, left onto Lee St., left onto Cameron Street, and ending at the intersection of Cameron and Pitt streets.

UPDATE: Miracles do happen. Little Sammi has been found after 9 days and is home with his family. Social media sharing and flyers are what brought him and most lost dogs home. Thank you to all our amazing wrma followers for caring and sharing.

Lost Westie in Cincinnati. Ohio. Please DO NOT call out or chase. Just report sighting to owners as soon as possible.

UPDATE: REUNITED!! Sammi is home safe & sound after 9 days, 15 hours :)

R.I.P. Sweet Aiko
16 years and 10 months
Sweet Aiko came into Westie Rescue 16 years and 10 months ago. Aiko's mom was rescued by Westie Rescue from a backyard breeding situation in Southeast Virginia. Her mom was pregnant and some very special pups were born from that litter. Aiko was one of the girls and our own Westie Rescue Ambassador Fergus was also part of that litter. So Fergus and Aiko were siblings
Aiko was so well loved by her mom Patricia. They had a special bond. Aiko had a wonderful and long life with her mom. Please keep Patricia in your thoughts and prayers. Losing a westie is so hard. They are such special dogs. We are sending love, prayers and comfort to Patricia. Rest Well Aiko.

Guess Who????
It's me. Malcolm!
And I love the snow. It's so much fun to play in the snow, but honestly it's a little exhausting too since the snow goes to the top of my legs. Now I'm resting in front of a warm fireplace and I think I'll stay right here for awhile.
P.S. Malcolm wants to know if any other doggies got to play in the snow? Share your doggie snow pictures with him.

SAYING GOODBYE: Today we have to say goodbye to a long term foster boy "Westley". At somewhere between 15-16 years, he had a stroke and was unable to walk again but not too far gone to get a last treat. Westley has been in the loving care of Lucian Kowalski for the past year. Besides being a grumpy old goat, West enjoyed ball playing, yard sniffing and chasing his younger roommates around. West loved women but only tolerated poor Lucian in spite of him being the food giver, door man, yard walker, ball thrower, and provider of all good treats. West came to Westie Rescue when his owners passed away leaving one grumpy old guy alone. Westley is the dog without the harness and who runs over to the other dogs to make sure they know that he is in charge. He makes sure that they are playing correctly and following the westie play rules. God Speed Westley and enjoy the clouds till we meet again at that rainbow bridge.
