We have been made aware of a post circulating from an adopter who was under the impression the 3 month old kitten adopted was "fully vaccinated"
So, we want to take a moment to clear the air and use our platform to educate what adoption protocols are for our cats in rescue as well as what legal and medically recommended timelines are for vaccines for kittens!
Our cats come spayed or neutered, treated for intestinal parasites (worms) and fleas or any other illnesses that arise while in our care, familial combo tested, microchipped, and up to date on age appropriate vaccines. What does this all mean? Age appropriate vaccines are very important for kittens as they need a booster every 3-4 weeks, ideally starting at 6 weeks of age and continuing through around 4 months of age- however, this can vary when kittens come to us when they’re older or sick but, we will always make sure that that series has been started prior to leaving our care. When getting spayed/neutered some of the clinics require that kittens over the age of 12 weeks get a rabies vaccine but, primary care vets recommend giving it at 4 months when the final FVRCP booster is given so, there can be a bit of variability surrounding that vaccine. When adopting out young kittens we try our best to explain this to every adopter, that they will need a booster and/or rabies vaccine once they are of appropriate age. It is the adopters responsibility at that point to get the kitten in to see their vet for follow up vaccinations.
So to recap:
FVCRP= core kitten vaccine that needs to be boostered in a series.
Combo test= a blood test that checks for FIV and FELV which are 2 incurable viruses cats can get which is most commonly transmitted through cat fights and from mother to kitten. We test one in every litter because they’re too young to be fighting so, this checks to see if it was passed down from mom. We will ALWAYS disclose if the cat/kitten is postivive prior to going home with a new family!
We also want to take a moment to remind our followers that we are a small rescue of fosters and volunteers. None of us do this as our fulltime job, we all work and have lives outside of rescuing cats. A lot of us come out of pocket to get the extensive medical care done for cats and kittens we are begged to take in every single day. It does not stop. Ever. And the $125 adoption fee hardly covers just a basic spay and combo test. We do this trying to make a difference in the overwhelming issue in the Upstate of stray and abandoned cats. We do this from the goodness of our hearts. So before bad-mouthing or slandering our organization and its name, come to us for resolve and understanding - we are all humans here.
If you are an adopter and ever have any questions please reach out to us via email: [email protected] our fosters have busy lives and they may look at a text while at work and forget to respond. It’s not because they lied to you about what kind of care their foster baby received. If you need clarification please reach out directly.
If you made it this far, thank you for reading and supporting 💚
