Since it's National Veterinary Technician Week, we thought we would try to answer the question, "What is a Registered Veterinary Technician?"

As a member of the veterinary healthcare team, veterinary nurses/technicians are educated in the latest medical advances and skilled at working alongside veterinarians to give pets the best medical care possible. They work closely with veterinarians, veterinary assistants, practice managers, and owners to provide essential care to all species of animals. A veterinary technician may provide both emergency and routine medical care for animals and can perform any task assigned by a veterinarian except prescribe medication, make medical diagnoses and perform surgery.

To become a veterinary technician requires an associate degree in veterinary technology, animal sciences or a related field. Topics covered include animal behavior, animal pharmacology and veterinary hospital management.

More information about NAVTA and this special week can be found at www.navta.net

It's National Veterinary Technician Week!!!!

Your pet(s) deserve the best in pet care and it takes everyone on our veterinary health care team to make that happen. Nearly every day, Lanie, Cayla & Nicole are asked to do a variety of jobs, including vet-tech-type tasks, but this week we want to especially recognize Lanie Carr and her vital role as Certified Veterinary Technician at Redland Veterinary Hospital.

Lanie received her degree in May 2021 from Colby Community College, where her hardest classes were Anesthesiology, and Anatomy & Physiology. Also challenging was the fact that she was in the middle of her schooling when Covid hit. This changed the way she received her education, but it also allowed her more hands-on time in our hospital while she was taking classes online. To become certified, Lanie had to pass the state board exam, which is a grueling 170-question, 3-hour test.

It is great that Lanie wanted to return home to Medicine Lodge after receiving her degree, and we are privileged to have her on the Redland team!

September Pet of the Month 🍂🐶

Our September Pet of the Month is Mini Penny! She is a 10-year-old Yorkie owned by Judy Arnett and her husband. Mini Penny loves chicken and her favorite toy is a squeakable we**ie dog stuffy. She may be small but she loves barking at the trash men every Saturday to make it known that she is guarding the house! Mini Penny also likes to go to physical therapy with her dad and hates to be left alone, even if it's just for a little bit and mom is in the other room. Mini Penny has been with the Arnett’s since she was just a little puppy! She was a present for Judy’s birthday and arrived with her new grandchild as a surprise. Judy was ready to meet her new grandbaby and was surprised to see a tiny puppy in the car seat on the baby’s lap. Since then Mini Penny has been attached to Judy’s grandchild. What a fun story! We usually get to see Mini Penny at the hospital for her allergy shots a couple times a year but recently she came in not acting herself with weakness in her hind end. Dr. Stone diagnosed her with a condition called pyometra, which is a life-threatening infection of the uterus in dogs. She had surgery to be spayed, removing the uterus and the infection. She has since made a full recovery and is back to her happy self!

🚨August Pet of the Month 🚨🐶🌻

Say hello to our August Pet of the Month, Bebe! She is a 7 year old Yorkie owned by Fred & Barbara Geary. The Geary’s have had Bebe since she was a tiny puppy that they got from a family in Derby years ago. Bebe may be a small girl but she sure can run fast. When she was just a puppy they were all out for a walk and some bigger dogs scared her. She took off running home, leaving her owners in the dust. They were so worried that they wouldn't find her, but were pleased to find her sitting on the front porch waiting for them when they got home. Fred and Barbara were so impressed she knew her way home being such a young pup! Bebe still enjoys long walks and sunbathing in the front yard. She's not a picky eater but she sure does love her moist & meaty burger flavored food and the occasional piece of bacon from dad! Bebe does steer clear of cats because she does not consider them friends and she doesn't love nail trims at home, but does a great job getting them done with us here at the hospital! We love getting to see you Bebe!

🚨July Pet of the Month 🚨🐶🌞🎆

Meet our July Pet of the Month, Ella! She is a 15-week-old Australian Shepherd owned by Aimee and John Defore. Ella is a sweet little puppy that the Defore’s recently adopted into the family. You may occasionally see her in the Sheriff's office at work with John. She loves to lay under his desk, or even sometimes on it, for a good nap! Ella is full of energy and enjoys going to her Sit Stay dog training classes every weekend. Since her classes are in Wichita she gets to go for a car ride, another favorite activity of hers! While she is in training she gets one of her favorite treats, "America's Vet Dogs" peanut butter training treats. Those sound yummy! When she isn't at work with dad, or going to training classes, Ella loves to play with her sister Fiona. Before long Ella will be twice the size of her big sister! After a long day of being a cute and sassy pup Ella likes to wind down by laying out over the air vents to get all of the cool air she can. Silly girl! We love to see your sweet face here every time you come in!
