Leaf-tailed geckos (Uroplatus) are endemic to Madagascar. The main threat to their existence in the wild is massive habitat destruction.
Within recent 20 years, Madagascar has acquired a tourist infrastructure, but has irretrievably lost many sacred corners of its nature and important habitats of local fauna, up to 80% of which being endemic.
When in 2010 BION Terrarium Center opened the first laboratory for breeding rare species, leaf-tailed geckos immediately became an important subject of our attention.
For today BION specialists have created reserve populations of a number of 10 Leaf-tailed geckoes’ species, which, if necessary, can be reintroduced into nature.
If you take the Breeder’s level of RHF membership, you will have a free access to all RHF digital editions, as a valuable bonus, including RHF LEAF-TAILED GECKOS

In the context of presentation and promotion of the Responsible Herpetoculture Project initiative, we are glad to share our “Parson’s Chameleon Conservation Project”.
Why this particular species?
1. Endemic to Madagascar, Parson’s chameleon is one of the largest and most spectacular living chameleons. And that implies a high public attention to the issues of welfare of these charismatic animals.
2. Most of the populations of this species are unique and exist outside of protected areas. And this means that the degree of vulnerability of the chameleon increases.
3. This species is characterized by a limited degree of flexibility. This means that it has less ability to adapt to rapidly changing habitat (as a result of agricultural transformation of landscapes and vegetation cover) and climate.
4. C. parsonii is a species with moderate fertility and, consequently, with less potential to restore their numbers.
5. Parson’s chameleons live in the neighborhood of humans, in settlements and in the agricultural landscape. And this means that the problem of close coexistence of humans and animals in the realities of the degradation of natural ecosystems can be actualized within the framework of this project.

Leaf-tailed geckos, being endemic to Madagascar and suffering from rapid habitat loss, were established in herpetoculture worldwide, now having more chances to be saved.
