Iguanaland strives to captivate the public about the diversity of interesting reptiles, promote in-house scientific research and learning, fundraise for reptile conservation projects, and advance the discipline of herpetology.
Iguanaland is surrounded by farmland in a rural part of Punta Gorda, a small coastal city situated in Charlotte County, southwestern Florida. Although Punta Gorda has its own small airport, I found it fairly convenient to reach Iguanaland from Southwest Florida International Airport in the adjacent Lee County, which is accessible by a much wider variety of airlines. The zoo is only reachable by car. The zoo is open from 10 am to 6 pm, seven days a week, and typically only closed on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Over the decades, Mr. Park has successfully bred in captivity 111 species of reptiles and amphibians, and at Iguanaland he proudly presents the largest publicly exhibited reptile collection in the United States, with over 250 species and counting! With foresight, Iguanaland is designed with plenty of empty outdoor enclosures facilitating the speedy adoption and acquisition of more animals.

Many of the displayed species are loaned, borrowed, adopted, temporarily cared for, or otherwise acquired from other breeders, zoos, and conservation organizations. Signage indicates the individual animals’ origins and names, which are often puns or pop-culture references bestowed by guests. Iguanaland welcomes donations of species they are missing in the collection, and also generously provides a home to unwanted pets that private owners can no longer care for.

02/09/2025

Species in the Notophthalmus genus are small newts, measuring about 7–14 cm in length. Their life cycle consists of the larval stage, the eft (terrestrial juvenile) stage, and the adult stage. Some species go through the terrestrial stage, during which they possess the highest toxicity. However, depending on environmental conditions, some individuals skip the eft stage and directly transition to the adult form. For species with a terrestrial eft stage, the individuals are typically bright orange or reddish-brown and carry a potent tetrodotoxin, which helps protect them from predators.
The species of Notophthalmus utilize various habitats in their natural range. In aquatic environments, they prefer stagnant water such as ponds, wetlands, and slow-moving streams, while in terrestrial environments, they tend to inhabit moist leaf litter and moss-rich forests. Some species alternate between aquatic and terrestrial habitats seasonally, particularly moving to the water during breeding periods. Additionally, in warm climate regions, some species bypass the terrestrial stage altogether, transitioning directly into aquatic adults. These life cycle changes can vary based on climate and environmental factors.

Look at the frog depicted on the cover of this issue. Some may mistake it for the Long-nosed horned frog (Pelobatrachus nasutus, formerly Megophrys nasuta) from Malaysia, well known in the trade, but with no multigeneration captive-bred population. Meanwhile, this is its equally impressive but less known cousin, the Annam Spadefoot Toad (Brachytorsophrys intermedia) from Vietnam. Like pretty much all members of the family Megophryidae it is not established in herpetoculture… Pls check the article “The Future of Herpetoculture” by Philippe De Vosjoli in the next RHJ #23 issue!
