ADOPTING A SENIOR DOGโฆAN ACT OF LOVE AND COMPASSION
Most veterinarians begin to categorize dogs as โseniorโ upon reaching their seventh birthday. However, smaller dogs tend to live longer lives and may not fall into the senior category until the ages of eight or nine.
Most dogs, when appropriately cared for, live many happy and enjoyable senior years.
Older dogs regularly find themselves homeless by no fault of their own. Often, senior dogs are surrendered due to the death of a guardian, a change in living arrangements, the arrival of a new babyโฆnone of which involve the canineโs behavioral or health issues.
Sadly, many potential adopters quickly bypass the adult and senior dogs housed in shelters in search of younger caninesโฆoften puppies.
In reality, these adult and senior dogs are generally well behaved, are house-trained and have excellent social skills. Like all other homeless animals, they deserve the safe shelter of a loving home.
Both pure-bred and mixed breed seniors are available at all of our local shelters.
Please consider providing a loving home for a senior canine!
When should you consider these options? โฌ๏ธ
โ๏ธSpay/neuter: Many behavioral issues can be solved by getting your cat spayed or neutered! Fixed cats are less likely to spray, yowl, fight, and escape.
๐ธApply for Aid: Having trouble affording spay/neuter, medications or food for your cat? Your local shelter may have aid you can apply for to get financial help.
๐ปFind pet-friendly housing: Apartments.Com and Zillow both have a filter that allows you to only see housing options that are cat-friendly! Use this when looking for a place to move. PetAndHousing.Org also has helpful information!
๐จBook a shelter stay: Many shelters will take in animals temporarily when their people are in crisis.
๐ Rehome: If itโs just not working out between you and your cat, donโt leave them behind or turn them outside. Ask friends and post on social media to find a loving home for them. Or visit Home-Home.Org to find or post a pet.
If youโve tried all of these with no luck, contact a reputable shelter for advice.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Fortunate Ferals will be temporally closed until approx. August 31st, 2024. If you need to contact us, please email us at [email protected]
Please remember we are a Trap, Neuter and Return organization and NOT a Rescue, so we cannot rehome, remove or relocate any friendly or stray cats and/or kittens as we have no way of finding them homes and have nowhere for them to go.
Due to the high request for help, we are not taking on any new TNR projects at this time.
If you are looking to find out more information or are interest in attending our upcoming Sept.TNR workshop at Gulf Coast Humane Society, please email us at [email protected] and include your name, contact phone number and city residence.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused but we do thank you for your understanding and patience.

Bailey is a sweet long hair orange tabby girl who was adopted from HavenonEarth AnimalLeague 13 years ago and sadly was found at a shelter an hour from here. We were never able to track down the original adopter so we need to find her a new forever home. She is very sweet and affectionate, but would do best as an only cat. Apply to adopt Baily at https://www.healrescue.com .

Davey Jones was born in the bushes and found with his sibling who the mom cat led our volunteer to. Sadly the sibling died but Davey Jones made it and after a bout of ringworm he was put into adoptions at all of our 3 locations but somehow was always passed over.. After some intensive coaching he finally passed adoption 101 and when his perspective parents came in he immediately introduced himself and they were hooked..This success story and his happiness makes us all cry tears of joy..He and his new brother are happy and very loving with each other as we all should be in this world. Thank you for everyone who nurtured and believed in Davey Jones and didn't give up.
