Unlike humans who sweat, dogs eliminate heat from their bodies by panting. When panting isn’t enough, their body temperature rises and things can get dangerous really quickly.

Dogs with thick fur, short noses, those who suffer from medical conditions and older dogs can be more prone to overheating.

The most telling symptoms of heat stroke in pets is excessive panting. Other symptoms include signs of discomfort, drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, mental dullness and loss of consciousness.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke, be sure to:

☀️ Immediately call the nearest emergency animal hospital to alert them of your arrival.
☀️ Remove the animal from the hot environment immediately.
☀️ Let the animal drink AS MUCH water as they need, without forcing them.
☀️ Cool the animal off with cold water by placing soaked towels over their back and under their paws.

Of course, never ever leave a dog in a car with the windows closed and no A/C available. As pet owners it is important to be aware of the outside temperature and take appropriate measures to prevent heat stroke. That’s what we’re here for!

We often get asked, "Can I give my dog/cat 'human food' as treats?" Food is food, folks! Treats need not come from a bag with a picture of a dog/cat. We just want to be sure what we’re giving them is species appropriate.

They don’t need things like pasta, rice or corn in their diets, not even as treats. Raw unsalted almonds, cashews (they we are Blu’s favourite), fresh or frozen berries, are great treats!

And remember, there are some foods that are toxic to dogs and cats, so if you’re not sure, check first!

🐶💙😺 We often talk about the benefits of feeding your pets a diet that closest resembles that of their ancestors aka, Canis lupus and Felis silvestris lybica respectively. Offering them a wide variety of proteins served in ways they would find in the wild, is beneficial for their overall health, immunity and well-being.

👉 So! What do we mean by serving their meals as “they would find in the wild”? We mean offering them EVERY part of the animal! Every single part. No waste! If you’ve noticed our dehydrated treats collection, you know that we take using every single part seriously, especially the fur!

👉 There are numerous reasons to offer your pet whole prey, including fur. While it may seem quite gross at first (believe us, we’ve been there!) fur contains the richest source of manganese. Manganese is required for the development and maintenance of healthy ligaments. It also plays an important role in fat, carbohydrate metabolism and blood sugar regulation.

👉 If that wasn’t enough, fur is packed with fibre that serves as an added prebiotic for your pets gut health. It feeds good bacteria and helps clean up your pet’s digestive tract. Besides, how on earth would they ever get the fur off their prey in the wild?!

👉 Of course, we understand that offering your pet this kind of diet does not work for everyone which is why we are always promoting a rotational diet! When we offer our pet a meal closest to their ancestral diet - and that could mean topping their bowls with dehydrated rabbit ears or Stella & Chewy’s freeze dried patties every day or Raw by Bailey Blu a couple times a week, we are giving them nutrients, vitamins and, minerals they would otherwise not have in their same old diet. Spring has sprung!🌷

But, unfortunately, so too has allergy season. Seasonal allergies are very common for you and your pet and often leaves them itching, scratching, and generally miserable. There are many types of environmental allergies but they all have one thing in common, an overactive immune system responding to a threat that isn’t there.

Your pet may acquire seasonal allergies for a myriad of reasons but fortunately there are things you can do to moderate their environmental exposure and help their overactive immune system rest.

Pets with allergies almost never have just one symptom. These symptoms can range from runny eyes, clear nasal discharge, to sinusitis but the most common of all is itchiness. Unfortunately, most conventional medicine treats allergy symptoms with the use of steroids and antihistamines. No doubt steroids work quickly and efficiently, but they serve only as a band-aid to the real issue going on, which is inflammation. By targeting and healing inflammation at its root cause, we can eliminate flare-ups altogether.

Melissa’s cat, Hooligan has had a history of both seasonal and food allergies. He was medicated with steroids for years and while they helped temporarily, every time she wanted to take him off of them his allergies would come back up, at times worse than they were before. This is because the immune system does not “reset itself” but rather amps back up once the medication has been eliminated.

14 years later and he’s running up and around the house like a kitten - Hooligan hasn’t had a flare-up in years! How did she do this? By strengthening his immune system, with natural anti-inflammatories and naturally building up his immune system. Although a slow process, it is possible!

Pets that eat an inappropriate diet can have systemic inflammatory responses, therefore the first step was getting him onto a species appropriate raw diet. Omega-3 fatty acids & Bee Pollen became his best friend.

As the weather begins to warm up and unearth some tasty treats for your pet, now’s a good time to talk p**p!

A lot can be told from your pet's stool. Understanding and assessing for any signs of health issues is a great way to stay on top of their overall wellbeing.

A healthy stool is one that is small and firm, has mild odor and disintegrates quickly. It is a sign that your pet is absorbing all of the nutrients they are intended to receive in their diet. A good example of this is a raw fed pets’ stool versus a kibble fed pet. Raw fed pets tend to produce very small, less stinky and firm p**ps compared to dogs on a highly processed kibble diet. Pets that are fed kibble typically produce larger, more frequent smellier p**ps.

Regardless of your pet’s diet, one of the most obvious signs of any potential health problems is diarrhea. Diarrhea can have a lot of variables - some of which can be more serious. Here are some examples:

A soft stool, with no visible shape, blood or mucus generally indicates an upset stomach and is, in part, due to dietary changes or your pet getting into something sneaky.

A greasy, sticky looking stool can be a sign of too much fat in your pet’s diet. It may begin mild but can get more serious if not addressed.

A black, tarry stool usually means that there is some old blood somewhere in your pet’s digestive system, this should warrant an immediate call to your vet.

Watery and mucous-looking soft stool can be a sign of a viral, parasitic infection. This can quickly lead to dehydration. Offer your pet a moisture-rich diet and monitor.

Finally, the ever-confusing small bowel diarrhea. This is when your pet has a normal-looking stool followed by a very loose, soft-type stool. This can be a sign of food intolerances or gastro issues. A moisture-rich, easy to digest diet and constant monitoring is a good idea. If the symptoms continue after 3 days, a trip to the vet can be beneficial.

Being aware of what is normal p**p for your dog or cat and regularly checking their stools for any deviation in colour, consistency and the smell is crucial knowledge. Being an advocate for our pets is the best way to keep them healthy and thriving!

Now that winter’s end is finally in sight, it’s time to finally bring in Spring and its warmer, longer days. If you’re anything like us, your days are now filled with longer walks, gardening, seasonal chores and generally more time outside!

Before you embark in outdoor revelry, here are 5 springtime tips to keep your furry friend warm and relaxed in the sun!

🌷 Inspect your pets collar and tags! Warmer weather means more trips to the park and more opportunity for your pet to wander off. Making sure their tags and microchip information is up to date will make it easier for you to locate them.

🌷 Grow your garden, with care! Be mindful of the fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides you use to keep your plants and lawns healthy and green. Some of their ingredients can be very toxic to your pets! Always store them in places where they can't get to.

🌷 Fleas and ticks! It’s that time of year again! Pesky parasites like fleas and ticks make the rounds during Spring so be sure to have preventative measures on hand to keep them at bay!

🌷 Just like us, once the pollen starts hitting the air, they can experience allergies too. It’s not only pollen and grass but insect bites and bee stings too. The severity can vary between animals so keep an eye on your pet and get them the necessary care as soon as you notice a change in their behaviour.

🌷 Grooming your pet regularly is definitely important, but spring grooming even more so! In the spring, your pet needs to shed extra fur because warmer weather means they don’t need it anymore. And that’s where you come in! Grooming your pet regularly keeps them comfortable during the warmer days .

PRO TIP: Offering your pet a fresh, raw diet and raw, frozen treats are an added delight and a fantastic opportunity for them to cool down during the warmer days.

Cats, being obligate carnivores and all, sometimes leave their owners perplexed when they see them eating their plants or nibbling on grass. Have you ever noticed your cat eating grass and wondered why? The answer may be as simple as your cat satisfying a natural craving for grass! 🌱 😺

🌱 Although some cats are more interested in nibbling on grass than others, if yours is one that does, you should be careful about allowing your cat to go outside to munch away. 🌱 For most pet parents, the long, sunny and warm days (although very much appreciated) also means that the dreaded flea & tick season is fast approaching.

🌱 As pet parents, we need to protect our pets from any illnesses these parasites can carry. And while prevention is the best defense, it's important to recognize the signs and symptoms and what you can do to keep your pet protected inside and out. So before you run off to your vet, hear us out!

🌱 Traditional flea & tick treatments recommended by vets are mostly full of pesticides and other toxic chemicals that, while effective, may also wreak havoc on your pet’s health. We understand the panic around fleas and ticks, these persistent creatures cause such discomfort to our pets and finding relief at our vet's advice seems like the right thing to do. It's CATURDAY and we're talking about a topic that's very important to us, moisture and your cat! 🐱💙 Did you know that the worst quality wet food is still better than the best quality dry food? While we are not suggesting you feed poor quality wet food - because the lack of high quality protein can lead to a host of other problems, it just goes to prove how important MOISTURE is for cats. Cats are designed to meet almost all of their body’s water requirements through their diet and not their water bowl. Cats, having evolved from desert animals and being exclusive prey eaters, never developed a strong thirst drive. Because their natural prey is 70-80% water, they are meant to eat and drink in the same meal. The very act of eating ensures proper hydration. Your cat getting enough moisture from their diet is critical to their urinary tract health. A constant state of low grade dehydration can lead to urinary and kidney issues. So, what can you do? Ditch the dry food and make the switch to a moisture-rich canned, freeze-dries and/or raw diet! It will make a world of difference! 💙
